What did Neil do before he was famous? I know he worked for Smash hits or
something. I heard he worked in art business for a bit - anyone know whether
thats true or not?

According to the 1989 Pet Shop Boys on tour programme, "In July 1975, after
completing a degree in history at the Polytechnic of North London, Neil
took a job at Marvel comics, anglicising spellings and indicating where over
risque women needed to be redrawn decently. While there he interviewed comic
fan Marc Bolan, who politely pointed out that his tape recorder wasn't
working. In June 1982 he joined Smash Hits."

I should also add that again according to the 1989 Pet Shop Boys on tour
programme, "1970-71 - Neil plays in a hippie group in Newcastle called
Dust: their most popular song is a prepostrous affair he has written called
"Can You Hear The Dawn Break?". They are heavily influenced by The
Incredible String Band. "We were convinced we would become terribly famous.
It was very kind of stoned seventies but we used to think it was absolutely
brilliant at the time."

So there you go!
