Last night in San Diego, on night two of mine and Skwerl's
Lollapalooza extravaganza in Cali, something very strange happened.
Fucking awesome day, first off. Great shows and rabbit's foot
adventure all around. APC kicked ass although the magic was a bit
deluded by the as-yet-unsetting sun. Jane's Addiction and Incubus were
stellar, J5 rocked, but it was Audioslave that stole the show for the
second night in a row.
I had reservations about Chris Cornell being able to pull of the
vocals live, because of bootlegs and Soundgarden shows I've heard
where he's fallen short of spectacular. All my worries were discarded,
however, two minutes into the first song. He was fucking amazing, the
band was completely on, and I had the time of my life rocking out to
them. Among others they played Gasoline, Hypnotize, Show me how to
live, Light My Way, Super Stoopid, Seven Nation Army (white stripes
cover) - which, also a surprise to me, kicked fucking ass...
The highlight of their set last night, and the reason I'm writing
this, was when the rest of the band left the stage as Chris picked up
an acoustic guitar. As he plugged in and got comfortable I glanced
left sidestage to see one Mr. Eddie Vedder, hair died an inconspicuous
platinum blonde. He seemed withdrawn, so I had reservations but my
heart leaped at the thought of a duet....a temple of the dog
revival...anything at all. (it's only fair that you know I'm a
fiercely intense pearl jam fan)
So imagine my surprise when out from the other side of the stage walks
Maynard! Crowd goes wild.... and he and Chris go into Elvis Costello's
What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding.
Chris Cornell, Maynard James Keenan, and one acoustic guitar.
Fucking Awesome, is what I'm trying to say. Vedder watched it all with
an an amused, affectionate look on his face, but never made his way
onstage.
They finished the song and the band came out to finish with I am a
Highway and Cochise. My night was complete...
I have renewed faith in Audioslave, particularly in Cornell's
abilities to sing like nobody else in music today.
Lollapalooza is a new beast, something very different from the old
Lolla, but this was one incredible weekend... Go, if you get the
chance....

Maynard has always spoken highly of Chris in interviews, and I've always
questioned if there would be any sort of collaboration between the two.

Hopefully a recording will surface. It'd been nice if Eddie would've jumped in
also.

FUCK! I knew I should've found a way to go last night...

Thanks for the report; now if only a bootleg surfaces... (hint hint)

By the way, this just brought back memories of Lolla '93 when Maynard
(Tool played second stage at this point) and Danny Carey walked on
during Rage's set to complete Know Your Enemy. At that time Maynard had
a wicked Mowhawk, and Rage nearly incited a riot during their second song.

How does this new incarnation of Lollapalooza compare to the days or
yor? I saw Lolla 92-95 (damn me for missing 91), so I'm interested if
Perry's new-found love for the tour has revitalized it. At $50 a ticket
I couldn't make it this year, though this looked to be a pretty sweet year.

Hopefully Audioslave will either come back strong with a headlining
tour, or go back in the studio and cut another album. I hope to see
great things from them for years to come.

Saw the same years...and missed the show here in Chicago because of a 17 hour
drive to Boston to see a 4 hour PJ show...heard it was OK...nothing stood out
like back in the day.

I REALLY wish he wouldn't do that !
Mike & stone too, I don't like that look on any of them.
Can't leave these guys alone with their heads.

"DreamzNred" <dreamz...@comcast.net> did proclaim:

To me, the words "inconspicuous" and "platinum blonde" don't go
together.

Anything has got to be better than what he had, so even though I had
thought that I didn't like the blonde last time, in retrospect I was
wrong, wrong, wrong. This has *got* to be better. Just has to be.

>Mike & stone too, I don't like that look on any of them.

I like Mike blonde. Stone...eh.
