I deleted the message that was originally posted who said that While We
Cry by Kenny Wayne Shepherd is very similar to Yellow Ledbetter. Having
this album, I am playing it right now, and it is unbelievable... I'm
really in a state of stupor... It says it is written by Shepherd in 1993
and Yellow Ledbetter off of Daughter has it being played in 1993.

Okay I had to take a break and do some researching... I've listened to
both for about 4 hours straight, one after the other... anyways, While We
Cry opening and closing is just like Yellow Ledbetter... but the whole
middle part sounded like another familiar song, I could sing some of the
chorus but couldn't place it... I kept thinking Eric Clapton or Stevie
Ray Vaughan... I was finally able to track it down through many many
lyric searches. It is the Allman Brother's Band Soulshine written by Warren
Hayes, a member of ABB, that was written in 1995. To me it sounds like an
obvious copy of While We Cry, which is credited to Kenny Wayne Shepherd copy
right 1993 Only Hit Music BMI and in the intro, he says it is a song he
wrote. In Kenny's credits he mentions Leadbelly aka Huddie Ledbetter
which I have seen some reference's to on here re: Yellow Ledbetter,
although I can't recall what exactly was said about him and PJ being
influenced by him - I'd like to know though if anyone can refresh my
memory. The only other connection I could find was that KWS and
Leadbelly are both from Louisiana and of course the name of the album
being Ledbetter Heights. Does anyone have a source of who actually
wrote Yellow Ledbetter? Someone mentioned a copyright on YL and I did notice
a copyright notice within the lyrics search, but the lyrics were just what
someone else thought they were, which were way off, according to my own
interpretation, but anyways.... the copyright was, I am assuming, for lyrics
that were posted from sleeves and such. If anyone else has these three
songs, YL, WWC, and Soulshine, I would like to hear what your opinion is
re: if they are the same? I did find a tabulature (sp) for Soulshine,
but it doesn't mean a thing to me as far as interpreting it vs. what is
played by KWS.

Anyways, hope to hear some feedback on this... and take a look at my
lyric interpretation of YL which I am going to post after this note.
Listen to the song with the lyrics and see what you think. There a still
a few things that I am uncertain on so any suggestions you have, send
them my way. It makes a lot more sense than what I saw online as well as
in the Pearl Jam songbook, although I may have a really old copy of it.

See ya.

I remember reading an interview with Mike McCready that says that he
wrote the music for the song as a trubute to Jimi Hendrix. If you're a
Hendrix fan, this was obvious. it sounds a lot like the intro to Little
Wing. Take a listen...
later,
Graham

I'm many years behind in posting this although i grew up listening to all of the songs you mentioned. It has however also come to my attention you should look at Mountains "Silver Paper" as part of the chain. I think it probably all links back to Leadbelly but this was an interesting find on my part as i too always found the similarities between so many songs at the same time odd. This changes the dynamic a bit though with Mountain being much older and possibly a very strong influence on all of the groups as well.
