Has anyone heard the song "While We Cry" on Kenny Wayne Shepherd's
Ledbetter Heights CD? It's an instrumental that sounds just like Yellow
Ledbetter without Eddie's voice.

It is a live song and before he starts playing, he says that it is a
song he wrote. The liner notes for his CD says 1993 and I know that
Yellow Ledbetter was on the Jeremy single which was 1992. And then there
is the "Ledbetter" connection.

I guess it could be possible that Pearl Jam and Kenny Wayne Shepherd
were both influenced by Hendrix's "Little Wing," but if you hear it, it
seems like too much of a coincidence. Just wondering if anyone else has
noticed how similar the music is and whether or not Kenny Wayne Shepherd
borrowed Pearl Jam's music........

i've noticed the very strong similarity but have never been able to find an
answer as to why

You know, I posted this very same message a few months ago. I really did'nt
get a response. But your absolutely right. I saw Kenny Wayne Shepperd in
Dec. and he was awesome! But hey this is a Pearl Jam ng. The songs are
amazingly alike.

They played the Shephard version on the radio one time out here
in LA. The dj said that there is a bluesman named Ledbetter
or maybe it's a blues song. Anyways, he said that the riff was
similar to the one on both new recordings. Basically they both
had the same idea of incorporating that E major lick into a song.

As they say great minds think alike. But in a world of copyrights
it can have it's problems.

The first time I heard that Kenny Wayne Sheppard song i thought he copped
that lick from mike. But actually i've heard that lick on records dating way
back into the '50s.

P.S. The Sheppard song came from the album "Ledbetter Heights", which
probabally accounts for that ledbetter thing. It's also no coincidence the
song in quetion is titled, "yellow bedwetter (ledbetter)"

I case anyone doesn't know this, "Ledbetter" is the real last name of
the folk/bluesman known as "Leadbelly". His real name is Huddie
Ledbetter, and I'm sure that the man's name and his music are an
inspiration for both the PJ song and the KWS album

i do believe "where did you sleep last night", the song that nirvana
covered on unplugged, was originally an old country song from the 50's,
and the original guy who did it was named ledbetter(his last name,
pretty sure, just can't remember his first name)....as for influences in
that song, alot of people say mccready stole the riff from "little wing"
by jimi hendrix, but to tell you the truth, i don't hear it(they also
say thats why pearl jam kept yellow ledbetter off of ten, because they
didn't want to spark a yellow ledbetter-little wing controversy... don't
know about the validity of that though)... it sort of has the same
"feel", but, if thats ripping someone off, then alot of other people in
music are in trouble.... hope it helps

I heard him perform it live in Cincinatti last week (opening for Mr. Dylan
who was MAGNIFICENT) and I can say two things: a) Kenny Wayne needs a new
singer and needs to be a little more active on stage cause me and my friends
zoned out; and b) the song in question here sounded like a COMPLETE ripoff
and he made a big deal in his introduction to it about how it was the FIRST
song he ever wrote (when he was like 12 or something).

Let's not forget the fact that Ledbelly was from Shreveport. Just like Kenny Wayne.
