I know what I would have done. I would have DIED, cause I couldn't live on

those goddamn coconuts open and I HATE coconut, anyway! I would have never

dehydration.

What did you think it was going to be about? Don't people ever read
reviews or watch previews? This reminds me of a former friend of mine

Tom Hanks was absolutely incredible in this movie. If there was any question
of a doubt of how great an actor he is, this movie seals the deal. I still
can't believe how much weight the man lost over the course of filming.
I'm interested in hearing what people thought of the ending (without giving it
away of course). The vast majority of people I know who have seen it hated the
ending, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it was the perfect ending for the
script.

Actually, I tend to avoid reviews and such b/c I don't want to be
swayed by something that someone else noticed and formed an opinion
of. Take 'Almost Famous' for example. When I saw it, I did so w/o
reading what anyone else had to say. The result? I disliked it for
it's own merits not b/c of someone else's opinion. I think people
should pointedly avoid reviews of anything until after they've formed

Well, ok, a lot of times I avoid reviews myself. But you don't
generally go see movies without knowing what they are about do you? At
least on a regular basis. It's hard to miss hearing about a Tom
Hanks movie, even if you don't read reviews.
Oh sure, go see a movie about falling off a mountain. Kewl ;)
Say it ain't so Squid, say it ain't so. I loved Almost Famous; it made me
feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I don't think it's for everyone, but being
a diehard music fan I'm very surprised that you couldn't identify with it.
Plus the soundtrack rocks :)

Fair enough. It's always good advice to form your own opinions. Lord knows
I'd be listening to boy bands and bad rap otherwise...

I really liked Cast Away. I thought it was great because a movie like that
doesn't get made very often--one man, sleeping and eating, with almost no
talking through most of the movie??? I can only imagine what the movie
studio suits must have thought when someone first pitched the movie concept
to them. I grant you that the little love story bits at the beginning and
end seem artificially tagged on, but it also serves to show the contrast
between the world he'd become accustomed to and the world he left behind.
It's interesting to see what he does when faced with normal everyday
situations after having lived in survival mode for all those years.
If I recall correctly, Tom Hanks said on a late night talk show that it
took 5 years to make the movie--which places it *before* all the Survivor
bullshit started. Apparently they made the first part of the movie, and
then took a break. The director Robert Zemeckis even went and made a
different movie while Tom Hanks lost 50 pounds for the role; that's what
allowed the drastic change when they fade out and then tell you that 4
years have passed. I wonder if Tom Hanks could give me some dieting tips,
I'd love to lose 50 pounds...

You're right, I do love music, but just b/c a movie has a bunch of
references to bands that I like doesn't swing much with me. I just
didn't care for the story. Maybe it's b/c that most of the stuff that
relates to that band is actually stuff that happened to Led Zeppelin
and so I can't be entertained by it since I've known about it for
years. Some non-Zep fans may be shocked to learn how much of that
movie actually happened...
...but moving back to the subject at hand, I felt that Almost Famous
was an artistic movie that just didn't suit my tastes. I don't think
much of Kate Hudson's acting abilities. I loved Jason Lee, but I felt
sort of ripped off when he only had a minimum of screen time. The
movie was decent, I guess, but I can't help but think that it was
overblown.

I have zero intention of seeing the movie, but I do think it's odd
that people would lump that in with Survivor. Have people been doing
that? I hate Survivor and everything it stands for. It sickens me
that people would trade their privacy for thirty minutes of TV time
every week.

He's a very good actor who's been very fortunate in his script
selection in the last five or six years, basically. I think it's a
shame he's more or less ditched comedy though, the guy is hilarious
and he hasn't really done a true comedy in awhile. With all the
fabulous movies he's been in, my two favorite Tom Hanks movies are
still Splash and Big. :)

I think Robert Zemeckis' virtuosic abilities as a director are being over
looked here. The man is a genius, plain and simple, able to very
entertaining movies with the newest of technologies, and the most excellent
of scripts. The man knows cinema and is one of the greatest living
directors.

I'm glad someone feels the same way I do about all those "reality" shows.

Okay, I'll go with you on that one. I think Hanks is a very gifted
comedian, and maybe that's why I don't like him as much as before b/c
I always thought his comedies were awesome. I loved Dragnet. That

Well, that's the difference between us, I guess. Hey, weren't you

Well, the DVD edition is going to have, like, at least thirty extra
minutes of deleted scenes put back into the movie, so you'll be able

I didn't like it either. I didn't think it sucked; it just wasn't

I saw a little movie called "Chocolat" which I really liked...I'm a

I'm going to see "Quills" today, which I'm sure will be a highly

The thing I hated most about the movie....all the outrageous product

Yeah I'm weird that way. :) Actually, I didn't mind reading about
Binaural, or hearing what others had to say about it, I just didn't
want to *hear* it until it came out officially, because if I knew the
songs before the album came out, going to get it would be so
anti-climactic. And it's not like I have to know details of a movie
before I go see it...I just want to have some idea of whether or not
it looks like something I'd enjoy. Previews do that nicely, usually.
Of course, I'm currently madly avoiding Episode II spoilers (though
I'm not averse to checking out pictures of Ewan McGregor in that
lovely beard and flowing cape <g>) after having the ending somewhat
marred by the foreknowledge of Qui-Gon's untimely end in Episode I...
Ohh, but you know what I hate worse? when they change it to be something
LIKE a familiar brand name but not quite. You know, like if they'd kept the
same colors and print style but renamed it "AmEx" or "Global Express," ha.
To me that's more distracting. I still remember in the wonderful movie,
"Who's That Girl,'' the faux UPS driver, Buck, who I believe worked for
UPC...but looked just like a UPS driver...it drove me nuts.
Of course, we all know...IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH.
And he was. Kinda. Sorta. Pant, pant....<<
I believe it was! Back in the day I would have found Jimmy Page more
appealing (please note the importance of the phrase, back in the day...) but
I've always been a guitar girl, not a lead singer girl. ; ) But I wanted to
try and twist Squid's arm...the entire band in Almost Famous is not molded
after Led Zep...otherwise there would have been a shark/groupie incident at
the Edgewater Hotel. I think Cameron Crowe said that it had a lot to do
with the Allman Brothers and that the lead character was based quite a bit
on Glenn Frey of the Eagles. I believe the "Just make us look cool" line
was attributed to him.
And Jett, didn't Plant yell out at the premiere during his golden god line?
Something like, "No, but I am!" after Billy Crudup utters the line from the
roof of the house? That's so great of him. I need to find my CC interview
in RS...god, I hope I didn't throw it out during the housecleaning fest
before my parents came...arrrrgh...
I think trailers can really fuck up the movie experience. The best
trailer for a movie EVER was for Face/Off. Too bad the movie sucked.
It is possible to create a trailer for a movie w/o spoiling it, but
that's an artform that few people take seriously anymore.

I didn't mean to suggest that the band were based on Led Zep, I meant
that some of the things that happen to them were almost word for word
retellings of some of Zep's experiences. The plane incident, the band
bringing a kid on the road with them for an interview, "I am a golden
god", a sexual relationship with an under age groupie (a spade is a
spade, Penny Lane was a groupie and so was Lorie Maddox), other things
too.
