Superunknown or BadMotorFinger Are their best albums.
The A-sides has their more well known songs from the early days on. It
might be best for you.

Try listening to music clips on places like cdnow.
A-sides is a good over view of their music.
But Superunknown is great. It was the first one I bought.
I listened to it about 5 times in a row when I first go it.
I was busy putting together some bookshelves and never
bothered to change the cd. The shelves were driving me
nuts but the cd wasn't.

Happy listening,
Melody

If you like more metal types of music, then Badmotorfinger.
If you like hard rock, go with Superunknown.
If you like hard rock with a Pink Floydian (read: slighty-wierd or
slightly-twisted) flavoring, then get Down on the Upside.
Personally, when I am curious about where to start with a new band, I go to
Napster and download a few mp3s and go from there. Each Soundgarden album is a
truely unique flavor. I prefer the later stuff (BMF and DOTUS) because Chris
does alot more singing (wailing) than screaming...but I love them all.
Soundgarden's music is as dynamic as Pearl Jam's.

not to mention 4th of July... or Limo Wreck... damn, I love that album. But
Badmotorfinger is still classic and gives you a great view of Matt Cameron
(ie Jesus Crist Pose)

They are unreal. Not as good as PJ mind you.
I haven't heard a lot of their early stuff but Superunknown was excellent
and Down On The Upside was even better!!!
Also check out the Singles Soundtrack for an awesome Chris Cornell song
called "seasons"

I prefer Louder Than Love - it's got loads of really unreal trippy bits on
it... but then again so has DOTUS, and Superunknown.... I haven't got
A-Sides, but I might have to get it....

I've always liked Ultramega OK... Never could get in to Louder than
Love or Badmotorfinger too much. But I Love Down on the Upside and
Superunknown. Ty Cobb is Great, as well as The One about Mr Hand

I'm with the Superunknown vote. Great album, and I particularly like "Fell on
black days"

I have to say, without a doubt, SUPERUNKNOWN
This was THE album of 1994... closely followed by The Downward Spiral.
Super... is the definitive Soundgarden. It has a bit of everything on it...
My personal fave has to be The Day i Tried to Live... just awesome.
DOTUS isn't the half-hearted mishmash that most critics say that it is... it
does contain the occasional average track, but nothing "bad." Cornell at his
most creative.
Same deal with BMF... the occasional song that lacks imagination, but a
solidly rocking record.
Rusty Cage is a great opener, Searching With my Good Eye Closed is an epic,
cinematic sounding rock track, while Drawing Flies is perfect if you want to
turn your stereo up for 2.5 minutes of hooky-as-hell power punk. Love those
horns.
Their earlier albums don't grab me as much, but are worth checking out if
you're a fan.
Phew...

superunknown is a great album but it is *not* the definitive
soundgarden. it's way more produced than any of the other stuff. i'd
say pick up badmotorfinger, screaming life/fopp, and down on the
upside. that'll give you their full range

rock on

Nobody's gonna mention Screaming Life, are they?

Ok, I was getting a bit carried away when I said that Super.... was
definitive.
It isn't.
But it is, imho, the BEST album. My second favourite of all time... (first
place is Tool's Aenima), an album I can listen to over and over again and
still find something new.
Sure, it is more polished than the others, but does anyone want to say that
it isn't excellent?
thought not.
DEFINITELY check it out.
(it was the third cd I ever owned... ah the memories)
