2.7 How come Evenflow sounds different on the radio than on my CD?
Evenflow was re-recorded for the release of the Alive EP. Many stations
play this version....it is very similar but at the beginning you hear
Vedder
yell "Haah!" as the riff kicks in and in the end he says.."I died, I
died..." This version is also the one they use for the video (see
question 3.5)
2.8 What does Eddie mumble in the the song ONCE (almost near the end) ?
"You think I've got my eyes closed, but I'm looking at you the whole
fucking
time."
2.9 What does Eddie whisper in the beginning of RELEASE?
Well, put your headphones on, and turn up the volume WAY UP and you can
hear
Eddie whisper "Oh father" before he starts moaning and the song starts.
2.10 Are there any live audio Pearl Jam available commercially?
Officially, only those released as b-sides. Unofficially, there are tons
of
live and unreleased Pearl Jam available on both CD and on tape from
stores
and traders throughout the world. Dave Abbruzzese is a fellow collector
of
live Pearl Jam. Don't pay money for tapes though...if you want a special
CD that is one thing, but for tapes, just ask around and you'll find a
network of traders will to share the wealth for mutual benefit.
2.11 I have an extra unlisted instrumental on my copy of Ten, is this
rare?
What is Master/Slave?
No, The track is called Master/Slave and is used to introduce the album
Ten before the song Once and is developed more completely after the song
Release to close the album.
2.12 Why does Footsteps sound almost exactly like Temple of the Dog's
Times of Trouble?
Footsteps was written by Vedder as part 3 of the Mini-Opera at the same
time that Chris Cornell was putting his Times of Trouble lyrics to the
same
Stone Gossard riff. So both songs eventually emerged. Technically
speaking, Vedder's came first. As Vedder says, "Chris has his version and
I have mine..."
2.13 Why was the first album called Ten?
After changing their name from Mookie Blaylock to Pearl Jam the band
named their album after Blaylock's number, 10.
2.14 What is <song> about and what's the inspiration?
This question is most often asked about Alive and about the Mini-Opera in
general, but is also asked about all others too. Well, all I, like the
band
can say is that if you listen hard to the songs, you will develop your
own
interpretations and special meanings that will be ten times more valuable
to
you than knowing the cut and dried story behind the song. For the
record,
since it is the most often asked question about song meanings, the basic
structure of the mini-opera is about A young teen that is told that the
man
he thought was his father is actually his step father and that his real
father
has died. He is further plagued by the fact that he is the spitting
image of
his true father. This leads to an incestuous act conducted by the boys
mother and much anger and confusion by the boy afterwards. This is the
Alive portion...Part 2, Once finds the youth, grown up and very violent
taking out his anger on his fellow human raping and killing them. Part
3,
finds the man on death row (Footsteps) and making his final statements
on
his feelings towards his Mother, blaming her for what happened. (BTW, the
trilogy was performed in order, complete with explanations, in Zurich,
6/18/92.)
Again, listen, absorb and develop your own interpretations, that is what
music is all about. People say the Mini-Opera and especially Alive is
about Vedder, but as with all good writers, it most likely developed from
a
grain of truth that was character sketched fictitiously into a story.
2.15 Yeah, yeah.. but, what does Yellow Ledbetter REALLY mean? Also, where
can I find this recording?
Yellow Ledbetter, that now famous B-side, is written by Mike (can you
hear
the Jimi Hendrix tribute?), Jeff, and Eddie. It can be found on the
JEREMY
maxi-single and the live version can be found on the DAUGHTER single.
This is another song that people ask what its meaning is and what the
heck the lyrics are. NO ONE but the band really knows what the
meaning of this song is or what the title refers to. Heck, we don't even
know what Eddie is mumbling on it! Like a lot of Pearl Jam songs, it's
pretty much open to your own interpretation. The songbook has what we
think is a good guess to the lyrics but again who knows? The Japanese
cd single with YL also has some lyrics on it but they don't seem to jibe
with what he's saying. All we know is there's a porch where people don't
wave, someone doesn't want to stay and there's a box or a bag
somewhere....Eddie also tend to improvise this song's lyrics when
Pearl Jam plays it live. So again, the best thing to do is sit back,
absorb and enjoy the beautiful, haunting music...Don't drive yourself
crazy by analyzing it for its true meaning.
2.16 Does Pearl Jam play <song> live?
Simply put, yes. They have at one time or another played out every song
they have recorded for release and many they haven't.
2.17 Where can I find the Pearl Jam Songbook?
The keeper of the songbook is Joe Danziger (danz...@eden.rutgers.edu).
He's up to version 1.6, I believe. It is regularly posted on several
archives on the NET.

3.3 I was watching Singles and I thought I saw Pearl Jam. Are they in it?
Yes, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and "Drummer" Eddie Vedder make up
Matt Dillon's backing band Citizen Dick.
3.4 Are their any commercial video tapes of bands available?
No, not yet. But there are tons of video bootlegs out there of live
stuff.
3.5 What does Eddie Vedder say at the end of the Evenflow video?
"I died, I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched me. I
died
and you walked by and said, 'No, I'm dead'."
3.6 Where was <video> shot?
Alive RCKCANDY, Seattle

| Section 4.0 - Technical, Musical and Books |
---------------------------------------------------------------
4.1 What instruments do the band members endorse?
Jeff Ament: Hamer 12 string, 8 string and fretless basses
Stone Gossard: Gibson Les Paul
Mike McCready: Fender Stratocaster
4.2 What magazines are good for Pearl Jam music?
Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Guitar World
4.3 Where else can I get a hold of some Pearl Jam guitar tabs?
A tab book has been compiled by Scott Minder (smi...@engin.umich.edu).
The Tab book v1.0 can be accesed through the Pearl Jam WWW site:
http://engin.umich.edu/~galvin/pearljam.html. The tab book can also be
directly accessed at: http://www.engin.umich.edu/~sminder/PJTabs/tab.html
4.4 How come the words in the <book> are wrong?
Well, Eddie Vedder's lyrics are hard to decipher, and like everyone,
music
books get them wrong. The tab is usually correct, but lyrics, use your
best
judgement.
Also, keep in mind that the band improvises a lot during their live
performances. Eddie sometimes changes lyrics to songs (i.e. Yellow
Ledbetter)
So, if you do try and transcribe lyrics yourself, you should try to
transcribe the studio version if you want transcribe "official" lyrics.
4.5 Have any books been written about the band?
Pearl Jam, the illustrated biography by Brad Morrell.
(very cool pics and brief bio of band)
Pearl Jam - The Illustrated Story by Allan Jones, published by Melody
Maker
books (I think) it costs UK pounds 7.99, though there is a marketing war
between big bookstores and some are selling for 5.99) I don't know if
this is
available in the US and how much it would cost here.
Also, someone has posted this info:
I received a copy of the Pearl Jam biography written by Mick Wall. It
was imported from the UK. The price was rather steep at $32 and there
is nothing "new" in it, but it explained the history of the Seattle
music scene very well, including a family tree of the bands directly
related to Pearl Jam. If anyone wants a copy here`s the info:

Other books available from Music Machine :
The Illustrated Biography by Brad Morrell,
and a tear out photo book.
And for other interesting readings, check out:
Route 666: On the Road to Nirvana by Gina Arnold
This book isn't exclusively about the band, but talks about the
Seattle 'scene', and chronicles some of Pearl Jam's early days.

5.2 On the Mookie Blaylock bootleg, there are 2 songs (Mystery and Hold
your Head Up) that doesn't sound like Pearl Jam. What gives?
Well, it's because the lead vocals are by other people. Hold your
Head
up is a Mother Love Bone cover. Mystery is by Blind Horse (according
to the Release 'zine). Some people have also maintained that the lead
vocals on Mystery is Shawn Smith, who is in Stone Gossard's other side
band, Brad and also in the band Satchel.
5.3 I am looking for a good boot, where do I go? Any recommendations?
Well, if you're looking for CD bootlegs, you can usually find them at
smaller
record stores that sell "rare, imported" cd's. Cd boots are usually
released
under labels like KTS (Kiss the Stone), Goregon, Cocomelos, Backstage,
On Stage, Papercorn, etc. Be warned that these bootlegs are expensive!
Single cd's cost ~$23.99-$29.99, Double cd's ~$40-$50, 5-cd box sets are
~95-$125. A good source to find bootlegs is a publication called
GOLDMINE, a paper for record collectors. You can purchase GOLDMINE thru
record stores (Tower Records) or book stores. Other sources for bootlegs
are:

5.4 Where can I get a hold of the Bootleg Discography?
The PJ bootleg discography is maintained by Christopher Williams at
CL20...@hvcc.edu. The discography contains the CD title, date, venue,
label, length, sound ratings, tracks and notes about the album.

6.4 Are there other places on the Net that I can find Pearl Jam
stuff/info?
(thanks to Cyndi Vatour and Indifference for these info)
1. FTP sites
(at netcom there is a directory called pearl-jam, and a file
called 'songbook', which has lyrics to all the covers and
b-sides. It also has info about Pearl Jam, too.)
-ftp.luth.se
pub/sounds/.2/pearl_jam
This is supposed to be a Scandinavian site, where they have
stored the audio files of Daughter, Alive, Even Flow and
Jeremy
(about 2MB each)
(This one is for all bands not just PJ , I think) Lots of lyrics,
they are listed alphabetically under /pub/music/lyrics
2. WEB sites
