Back in the day when The Style Council were the thing, Ialways
disliked DCLee because as soon as Weller got emotionally involved with
her his song writing and releases became SOFT and WEAK!
The Cost of Loving LP - say no more, the singles off it - get my
point...
At the time I thought Confessions was too soft as well but as I've
mellowed I do enjoy it now.

The second version of Cost of Loving (single version) is one of my favorite
Weller songs ever. If that's soft & weak, then I like it anyway.

That was my opinion at the time. As an 18 year old I was naive enough
to want Weller playing in the style of the Jam again and even some of
the 'Council stuff that preceeded it.
When I bought "It Didn't Matter" it was more out of Fanboy buying
everything that Weller did. I must have played the LP a few times,
quickly tiring of it and then NOT listened to it for probably 8 or 9
years. I always avoided getting that particular Weller album on CD - I
had all the other official ones and more.
I then picked up a japanese copy in NY in 1997 and relistened for the
first time in ages.
Did my opinion change - well even in the cold light of adulthood - not
really! I appreciated some of it a bit more but I still felt it had to
be the weakest ever Weller album ever.
I realise that Confessions is mellow etc but the whole album is
stronger and more cohesive. Heck Wild Wood is bloody hippy but I still
enjoy that! ;-)
Weller's output has always been diverse - moreso after splitting The
Jam. I'm sure many people were shocked by Cafe Bleu with the coffee
table jazz side of the LP followed by tracks such as The Gospel and
Strength of your nature on the other!! Even today many fans aren't to
struck on the "Heavy Soul" style and prefer the earlier solo stuff.
What is the next phase Weller is going to go through? I think we are
all really non the wiser after only performing/releasing 3(?) new
songs in recently and that included a tour and a major concert in the
summer. By the sound of it, he may be mellowing out again but we will
have to wait.
