(a) Aired multiple times throughout the month, and subsequently on PBS
According to Don McCarthy ...
He was on the Charles Grodin show in 1995 twice: "On Grodin's first show
(January 9, 1995) Art was the only in-studio guest. Martin Short also
made a guest appearance via satellite. On March 14, 1995 Art again made
an appearance ... this time with his beautiful wife, Kim Cermak. Son
James makes a brief appearance at the end of the show. Art sings two
songs solo, My Romance and Two Sleepy People. Kim joined Art for a duet
on The Water is Wide. David Biglin accompanied on the synthesizer."
In 1994, "Art appeared on the Regis and Kathie Lee program singing,
Crying In The Rain [and] on NBC's Today Show with Jimmy Webb, performing
Skywriter." He was also a guest caller, "Chester" in an episode of
-Frasier- that aired November 15, one entitled "Adventures In Paradise
Part II."
In 1993, promoting the release of -Up-'Til-Now-, "he appeared on
-Late-Night-With- David-Letterman- and sang Bridge Over Troubled Water,
the final verse was spectacularly performed." On June 20 that year, he
was on NBC's Today Show. On March 2, he was interviewed by Harry Smith
on CBS This Morning.
In 1992, he recorded the theme song to the show CBS show Brooklyn
Bridge, which was later included on his -Up-'Til-Now- album.
In 1991, he "was a featured guest on -Later-With-Bob-Costas-. This was a
two part biographical feature. A rare opportunity to see and hear Art
Garfunkel discuss his personal and professional life. It includes
vintage footage of Simon & Garfunkel as well as Art singing some of his
solo hits."
In 1988 he made his first appearance on the -Tonight-Show-. "Johnny
Carson said having Art as his guest was 'a great personal kick' and
described himself as a 'big fan of [Art's].' Art sang his recently
released When A Man Loves A Woman and I Only Have Eyes For You."
In December 1986, he "and Jimmy Webb appear as guests on Amy Grant's
"Heading Home For The Holidays" special. The show includes a duet with
Amy and Art singing selections from their recently released
-The-Animal's- Christmas-."
Although Art hasn't done a guest voice on -The-Simpsons-, his animated
alter ego briefly appeared in one episode in which Lisa imagined playing
in a concert of "second bests." On another episode, James Taylor guest
starred and described how he and Art had disposed of an ant problem at
Taylor's vineyard.
6.12 What was -Across-America-?
This was a TV special done by the Disney Channel, commemorating the end
of Art's cross-country walk. It features footage from two shows on Ellis
Island in April 1996, interspersed with commentary by Art. The beginning
of the special actually has a direct reference to the 1969
-Songs-Of-America- S&G show (See question 4.12.) Both open with
panoramic shots of the American countryside, and unaccompanied voices
singing the verse from America that begins "Kathy I'm lost, I said ..."
In -Songs- it was S&G remixed from the studio version of the song, in
-Across- Art re-recorded it. Most of the songs were issued on the CD of
the show, but the special also includes Cecilia, and the album in turn
has two songs that weren't on the special, I Only Have Eyes For You and
Bright Eyes. To make matters even more confusing, I Only Have Eyes For
You isn't on the American version of the album.
6.13 Didn't Art have a book of poetry out?
In August 1989, E.P. Dutton printed Art's first (and to date only) book
of poems, now sadly out of print. Titled -Still-Water-:-Prose-Poems-, it
gathered 84 of Art's mostly autobiographical works as well as a Q&A
session (with a nameless interviewer) interspersed between sections.
Some of the poems are oblique, but many more are either easily
interpreted or very straightforward. One of them was included in the
liner notes of his 1988 album -Lefty.- Here's the ordering information:
STILL WATER: PROSE POEMS Art Garfunkel, New York: E.P. Dutton, 120 p.,
August 1989, ISBN: 0-525-24795-5
6.14 What's Art up to nowadays? Is he recording a new album? Is he
touring this year?
A new Garfunkel CD, -Songs-From-A-Parent-To-A-Child- was released on
June 3. It's on Sony/Columbia (catalogue number 07464 67674-2). Another
Garfunkel current release, -Across-America- was released in the U.S. and
Canada on May 27 (cat. Hybrid 20001). It's a live album recorded in
April 1996 at Ellis Island. It features many S&G tunes, as well as his
big hits and a duet with James Taylor.
As of late, Garfunkel tours more often than Simon. His touring plans are
usually sporadic and hard to pin down. He spent the spring on a European
tour, did a benefit concert in New York's Central Park on June 16 along
with Tom Chapin and Buckwheat Zydeco, and in July toured Germany, doing
15 shows in 23 days.
Sim Shuzhen recently posted to the newgroup that in a Singapore paper
"He said that he'd be in Singapore next February for another Far East
tour."
6.15 Does he have an address?
His current agent is Alan Arrow, and according to a newsgroup posting,
you can write to him at: 9 East 79th Street, New York, NY, 10021. The
same posting said that he responded to an autograph request within 10
days.

PAUL SIMON COMPANION: FOUR DECADES OF COMMENTARY, Edited by Stacey

Spencer Leigh's PAUL SIMON: THEN & NOW which was published in 1973, was
the first book that attempted to address the lack of written material on
S&G. The writing is not brilliant, and there are many factual and
typographical errors, but overall it's a worthwhile read because it
offers insights and quotes not in the later books. Many larger libraries
will have it.
The next was 1977's SIMON & GARFUNKEL: A BIOGRAPHY IN WORDS & PICTURES
by Mitchell S. Cohen. It was shorter, but better written, with more
photos and a better discography.
Two books appeared in 1984, John Swenson's SIMON & GARFUNKEL: A MUSICAL
BIOGRAPHY by John Swenson and Robert Matthew-Walker's SIMON & GARFUNKEL.
The latter was more commentary than biography, however.
Patrick Humphries has written two separate biographies, 1982's BOOKENDS:
THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY and 1988's THE BOY IN THE BUBBLE (which was
also published, with only a different cover, as STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL
THESE YEARS). It was re-printed in paperback in 1990 with a new
epilogue. It's possibly the best of the lot, although he devotes most of
a chapter to the history of apartheid in South Africa.
SIMON & GARFUNKEL: OLD FRIENDS - A DUAL BIOGRAPHY by Joseph Morella and
Patricia Barey was published in 1991. (Different editions have slightly
different cover photos.) It is, as the title implies, as much about Art
as Paul. It's well-written, if melodramatic -- the crux of the text
revolves around the strained relationship between S&G from age 12 on.
At the moment, only one book is in print. It came out late last year,
called THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY. It doesn't live up to its title. In
fact, it's mostly cobbled together from previous books and interviews.
The photo section is largely blurry pictures taken by author Victoria
Kingston at the 1981 Concert In The Park, and Paul getting off planes.
One thing unique about it though, is that Art did grant an interview for
it, something none of the others can boast. Kingston also interviewed
some acquaintances of Paul's from his days in England in the 1960s.
According to Roger Lai, THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF PAUL SIMON &
SIMON & GARFUNKEL "is part of a series of books covering various
artists, and one of the authors writing for the series is Patrick
Humphries. You might wonder why one of the best qualified people to
write a Paul Simon bio isn't writing this one. Chris Charlesworth seems
to be quite a Paul Simon fan, and has plenty of credentials in writing
about music. He has also taken a workshop with Paul at Eddie Simon's
Guitar Studies Center in New York ... The book is one of these new
CD-sized books, and is ... published in the UK, so there's even
information about -The-Paul-Simon-Songbook-, -The-Simon-
&-Garfunkel-Collection-, and
-The-Definitive-Simon-&-Garfunkel-Collection."
Just published is THE PAUL SIMON COMPANION. the promotional blurb says:
"This anthology of published writings covers Paul Simon's career from
the halcyon years of Simon and Garfunkel through the controversial
-Graceland- album and Simon's current musical-theater project -The
Capeman-. Writers represented include Stephen Holden, George W. S. Trow,
Dave Marsh, Robert Christgau, and Jay Cocks." It will retail for $15.
7.3 Who wrote Anji?
English blues guitarist Davy Graham. The actual vinyl sticker of the
-Sounds-Of-Silence- album says Bert Jansch, but that's wrong. Jansch
-did-, however record a well-known, if somewhat inferior version. Michel
Couzijn, however, says Harry Sacksioni's version blows away all others.
Martin Carthy taught it to Paul. Al Stewart told Patrick Humphries "Just
remembering back at the flat in 1965, Paul -always- seemed to play Anji.
Every time he picked up the guitar, he seemed obsessed by it." Humphries
also says part of Paul's reason for recording it was to lend Graham some
badly-needed royalties.
7.4 How come it's "Groovy" in Feelin' Groovy and "Groovey" in We've Got
A Groovey Thing Goin'?
Who knows.
