3.6 I've seen this CD called -Paul-Simon-Plus- at a record store. What
is it?
-Paul-Simon-Plus- (also called -Paul-Simon-&-Friends-, among other
titles) is an album frequently found in the bargain bin which features
three Jerry Landis recordings from the early 1960s: Play Me A Sad Song,
It Means A Lot To Them and Flame. The rest of the album features
rarities from Neil Sedaka, Tony Orlando, Johnny Rivers and Frankie Vali.
These recordings are the property of the Henry Hadaway Organization and
the featured artists have no control over their issue.
3.7 Where can I get copies of bootlegs?
Sorry, it's impossible to give a source. (And this goes for all S&G/
Simon/Garfunkel/T&J material.) Number one, of course, they're illegal.
Second, while there are stores on-line that sell them and don't much
care about being named, many have dubious track records. And even those
who don't often have problems filling stock. Some titles, however are
definitely easier to come by than others.

3.11 I have a Tom & Jerry record but it's not listed in the discography.
Why not? Who is it by?
There was another T&J, an instrumental country and western duo on
Mercury, whose records have sometimes been mixed up with our T&J. One in
particular (Swanee/Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye) pops up because it was
recorded on the Warwick label in 1962, as were several Jerry Landis and
Artie Garr singles. Other records: Mercury 71753, South b/w Golden
Wildwood Flower, and from 1961, Mercury 71930, I'll Drown In My Tears
b/w The French Twist.
========================================================================
4 SIMON & GARFUNKEL
========================================================================
4.1 Who wrote the songs?
The music was mostly Paul with some input from Art. The lyrics were
almost entirely Paul. In the Tom & Jerry days, they co-wrote several
songs, specifically Hey Schoolgirl, Dancin' Wild, Don't Say Goodbye, Our
Song and That's My Story. Art also wrote Dream Alone, which he recorded
as Artie Garr in 1961. But afterward, Art only got writing credits for
Benedictus and Scarborough Fair/Canticle -- both of which coincidentally
were adapted from traditional songs.
Paul learned the guitar-part for the latter from Martin Carthy in
England. He told this to his friends at the time, but never credited
Carthy for it.
From the alt.music.folk newsgroup:
George Hames: "The S&G version was a compilation of words and a tune
arrangement by one Martin Carthy -- who eventually won the ensuing
copyright case. And then Art regards Scarborough Fair as the best thing
S&G ever did."
Carl Anderson: "Martin Carthy was interviewed on the -Acoustic-Routes-
programme on BBC2 some time back (the one about Bert Jansch), and he
told the story of how Paul Simon got Scarborough Fair. He turned up at
Carthy's house for dinner one evening with Tom Paxton, and expressed an
interest in learning Carthy's arrangement of the song. The next day,
Simon went out and copyrighted it. Martin Carthy stated that he was
pretty annoyed at the time and if pushed: 'I still am.' Cathy recently
won this lawsuit, actually. All future releases of the Simon recording
of the song will apparently have 'Arr. M. Carthy' or something like that
on them."
But Art's contribution to the group, as he told Paul Zollo, has been
understated:
A. I wrote some of the lines. Never took a writer's credit because in
spirit it was really a small two percent factor. But there's some of my
wanting in there. In Punky's Dilemma, I wrote a verse. [Sings] Wish I
was an English muffin, 'bout to make the most out of a toaster, I'd ease
myself down, coming up brown." I wrote [Sings] "I'm not talking about
your pig-tails, talking 'bout your sex appeal" [for] Baby Driver. I
wrote that.
Q. Didn't you have any desire to have credit?
A. It does work that way and you don't ask for credit when it's
happening because in truth, in spirit, Paul's the writer. Yeah, I wrote
a little of that stuff, but that's just technically true. In spirit, and
in essence of the truth, it doesn't matter. So I don't know, maybe I'm
being foolish for not being technical. Yeah, I wrote a certain portion
of the things
Q. Simon said you wrote the flute solo on The Boxer.
A. I wrote a lot of those kinds of things. If you're talking not about
the song but the arrangement; now I wrote more than two percent. I wrote
a lot of the parts that musicians played, solo and stuff.
In the 1973 -Rolling-Stone- interview, he was less eager to take credit:
Q. Was there any time ... when you actually helped write a line or a
chorus?
A. Very little. I wrote an occasional line for some of Paul's songs.
Q. What was your contribution to Scarborough Fair-Canticle?
A. I wrote the counter-melody that wove in and out of the lines of that
song.
Q. Why wouldn't you do that with more songs?
A. I mean, it's really ASCAP or BMI that labels that as the one song I
did it on. When you do it for three lines worth, you're not a
songwriter. You do it 16 lines worth, you're a songwriter.
Q. So in your estimation, it was accurate when you were credited
specifically in many press accounts as arranger of the group?
A. Well, now, I think Paul objected to the idea of being left out.
Coming up with the line that a string player would play is something
that Paul did as well. I might be the one [in more cases] to pin down
the specific line and show the musicicans what to play, not for note.
Art -can- play guitar, although how well is not established. Patrick
Humphries writes in his Simon biography "Judith Piepe ... remembers an
American student called Caroline Culpepper staying at her flat and
teaching Art Garfunkel how to play guitar; one of the songs she
remembers Garfunkel learing was Scarborough Fair." In the
above-mentioned -Rolling-Stone- interview, he was asked what label he
recorded on as Arty Garr: "Jack Gold's company, Octavia ... He had a
small record company and I wandered in one day around 1960, as a
soloist. I played guitar and I sang the song that I wrote [Dream
Alone]."
The back cover of the European compilation -Silent-Voices- also has a
(seemingly rare) picture of Paul and Art in the studio -both- holding
guitars on their laps.

4.3 What's up with that 1967 Pickwick album?
Pickwick 3059 (Allegro 836 in the UK) is called simply
-Simon-&-Garfunkel- on the sleeve, but the sticker on the actual vinyl
says -The-Hit-Sound-Of-Simon-&-Garfunkel-. It is comprised of ten Tom &
Jerry/True Taylor tracks. Judging by the 1966 cover photo of S&G
boarding a plane, and by the notes on the back (See below), Pickwick
wanted to fool S&G fans into buying was at first glance appeared to be a
new album. (At about the same time, ABC-Paramount re-issued That's My
Story/Tia-juana Blues as a single, which astonishingly climbed to number
123 on the Billboard charts.) S&G sued to have the album deleted, and
won. Thus, it is reasonably rare, and some price guides list it as worth
$50-75 in good condition. As far as the album's actual content, all of
it has been re-issued on bootleg LP and CD several times over.
Here are the back-cover notes:
"Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel started their singing and songwriting
career while in their final year in high school, in Long Island, New
York. They were discovered a few short years ago making a demonstration
recording of one of their songs in a New York recording studio. An
enterprising record company liked their sound and immediately released
their first national hit, Hey Schoolgirl. And as the well know cliché
goes ... the rest is history. We are very fortuante to have captured on
this recording the exciting sounds of these two brilliant young men.
Contained in this album is a generous sampling of two stars of tomorrow
who are the talk of the record world today."
Paul told -Record-Mirror- in 1970 "What annoyed me about the record is
that it implied that this was new Simon & Garfunkel material. They used
a recent photograph on the cover. If they'd released it saying 'This is
Simon & Garfunkel at 15' it might have been interesting and I would have
said 'Okay, that's me at 15 and I'm not ashamed of it.' I made a record
at 15, and everybody wanted to at that age.'"
In 1969, Sears apparently reissued -The-Hit-Sound-Of-Simon-&-Garfunkel-
as a promotional release under its own label.
4.4 Which S&G songs are rare?
Post-1964 there are at least four rare, but legitimately released songs.
Three, however, are soon to be rare no longer:
THE STAR CAROL is a studio single recorded in 1967 for the Grant's
Discount Store promotional LP -A-Very-Merry-Christmas-Vol.-1- The tune
was written by Alfred Burt, and S&G give it a short (1:43), simple
acoustic treatment with some additional background vocals by Art. Oddly,
none of the biography books so much as mention the song. It will be
included on the forthcoming box set -Old-Friends-. It was also on a 1980
Columbia compilation called -Dreaming-Of-A-White-Christmas-, which in
1992 was released on CD by Sony -- although it is difficult to find.
YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOUR INTEREST LIES is the only other
officially-released song that didn't turn up on an S&G album. It was
issued as the B-side of the Fakin' It single in 1967. (In fact, the mix
of "Fakin' It" was much more sparse and slower than the LP cut or any
subsequent single release -- all used the LP mix). Musically, it's a
fascinating track. Lyrically it's a bit shocking, with lines like: "You
don't know that you love me/You don't know but you know that I do" and
"You should know that I'm womanly wise." It's tempting to think that
Paul didn't much care it, and therefore didn't include the song on
album. (He has never commented on why he didn't, and seemingly no one
has asked.) However, he did include the sheet music in his 1973
-Songs-Of-Paul-Simon-, and it will be on the upcoming -Old-Friends- box
set. An early, live version can be found on the Tufts University
bootleg. The -Parsley-Sage-Rosemary-&-Thyme- outtakes reel also has a
different mix of the master take, the only thing special about which is
that it doesn't fade out -- Paul keeps singing until an engineer yells
for him to stop.
A CHURCH IS BURNING is the only song on the -Paul-Simon-Songbook- never
released on album by S&G (again, no reason has ever been offered). They
did, however perform it live c. 1965-66, and it appears on the Tufts
University and -Chez- bootlegs. There are also two versions, one by
S&G, one just with Paul on -Far-East-Reunion-. Still another version,
recorded in 1967 at Lincoln Center, is set to appear on the
-Old-Friends- box set.
THE SIDE OF A HILL also appears on the -Paul-Simon-Songbook-, and a solo
version by Art is on -Far-East-Reunion-, but parts of this song's lyrics
later became the Canticle section of Scarborough Fair/Canticle.
The following are rare and illigitimately relased:
GOING TO THE ZOO is a Tom Paxton song Paul played around 1963-65,
especially while touring England. Appears on -Far-East-Reunion- and
-Chez- bootlegs.
Tom Paxton's CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE I'M BOUND is another early
concert favorite. Two versions, one S&G, one Simon solo, are on
-Far-East-Reunion-.
GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART was performed during S&G's induction into the Rock
N' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990 (See question 4.15) and appears on the TV
footage of the event.
TEEN ANGEL appears on the tape of S&G's last concert before they split,
in Forest Hills, NY, July 1970.
BLACK SLACKS, BE-BOP A LULA, and WE BELONG TOGETHER were performed
during the Paramount shows in 1993 (See question 4.11) and subsequent
mini-tour, and thus appear on the -Hey-Schoolgirl!- and -Old-Friends-
bootlegs. Black Slacks (in a medley with Hey Schoolgirl, from 1969) will
be on the -Old-Friends- box set.
