I saw searching deja tonight for Osmonds being mentioned elsewhere and
came across a post from a guy who had a list in his post of VH1's picks
for top 100 influential artists of the millennium. The Osmonds were
#90! I think they should be higher, but considering the fact the Paul
McCartney only made it to #69 and Barbra Streisand was #95 or #96 -- I
think they did pretty darn well. Hooray for the Osmonds!

Well, it sure is good news that they even made it on there, Vickie! Of
course we think they should be higher. I wonder if VH1 is airing this top
100 artists of the millennium. They probably are. I'll have to check the
listings, to see when it's on.

No way!! Really??? That is *great*! I'm happy and excited that they even
made it on that list at all !!!!
We love the Osmonds of course and would love to have seen them higher, but
really...... we're talking influential....... what bands, musical styles,
artists, etc.... have they influenced? Unless what's being counted there is
the current teen boom with the likes of The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears,
*NSync, et al... at the helm. But that sort of thing goes away and comes
back again. We didn't have it so much in the 80s with the exception of New
Kids On The Block.
We all know the Beatles influenced everything from music to fashion,
defined a culture, so they would be alot higher. See what I mean? And Barbra
Streisand? She's phenomenal, but who/what has she influenced? And Paul
McCartney as a solo artist, though great, was nowhere near as influential as
he was as a member of the Beatles, thus he's lower on the list as a solo.
See we're not talking Top 100 Artists Of The Millennium, we're talking Top
100 MOST INFLUENTIAL Artists Of The Millennium.
I remember that list they had on awhile back that Kevin Bacon hosted, it was
a listing of the musicians' pick for top 100 artists of all time, and the
*Jacksons* made that one, and they weren't all that low either. That made
me wonder where then were the Osmonds.... but I think the musicians voting
were swayed in their minds thinking about the phenomenal success of both
Janet's and Michael's careers (who by the way also both made the list on
their own) so......to even be at #90 on this list is excellent, right?

if I can find when the show is airing, or if it aired, and to get the whole

I just went over to VH1.com and saw that the list of the top 100 songs of
Rock and Roll is coming up on the week of Jan. 10. I can't remember, what
list were we all voting on over there before? Was it that one? The one where
you got different genres and vote on what they have or write in your own...
there were a couple of Donny's songs in there?
I see that this one was voted on by people in the business from musicians to
DJs to producers to songwriters.. so this one should be very interesting
too. :) I didn't see anything up there about the 100 Most Influential list
unless I missed it. Laura, I'll bet they will indeed air that one too. :)
Oh speaking of lists and VH1... have you guys caught "The List"? I bet Donny
would be a great panelist or host on that show! I'd love to see him on
there.

I can't remember either, Polly, what that was that we voted on. My brain is

Alrightie then! I like this gentleman's post! I agree I agree!! Celine Dion
more influential than Lennon??? AACCKK!!
But I don't agree with his comments about the Beatles. I am not one who
thinks they walk on water, by any means but you cannon deny the fact that
they changed the face of music, and even fashion! They were a mirror.... a
reflection of ourselves. I find that quite influential. Bands today are
still looking to them for inspiration. Hello... Oasis??
Madonna agree very influential. She's an amazing artist to watch.... she
always changes, always grows. Who can forget seeing thousands of little
"Wannabes" back in the 80s running around when "Like A Virgin" came out?
And I most certainly agree that Elvis should have been alot higher than he
ranked. Many artists INCLUDING the Beatles looked to Elvis for inspiration
and were influenced by him.
Same goes for Chuck Berry (Keith Richards' hero) and Little Richard. They
were very instrumental in getting rock and roll moving along and growing if
you ask me.
And I agree with this gentleman and with Laura... Robbie Williams? Really???
A joke.
I'm from South Florida, so Gloria Estefan is *everything* here....but I
don't agree that she's very influential.
All in all it's a pretty interesting list. Thanks for posting it Laura! Let
me go look at it some more and I may have some more comments! LOL!

Oh, yeah! That's right!!! I'll be watching! Laura, you should catch it
sometime... it's on every night at 7 and 11. It's a hoot... there's a topic
each show like say "Sexiest Female Artist" and the panel of six celebs come
equipped with their top 3 in that category, they go around for #3 pick then
#2 then #1 and at the end the entire list of all of their pics are up and
they have an elimination round where each celeb takes one off there and
you're left with the final list which the AUDIENCE then votes on, and then
you get the top 3.
They get going sometimes and it's really a fun show to watch. There's always
a celeb host too, they've had Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, Charles
Barkley the basketball player, Meat Loaf, and more.

Okay, commenting again.... LOL! :-D This is fun!!
yes, Lennon should have been top 5 .....
U2 is great and to see them so high on the list is wonderful... very
influential and he's right they do alot of good work for charity.
ABBA? Umm... loved them when I was little back in the 70s but influential?
Hmm.... maybe.... in the way the gentleman here stated! LOL!
George Michael's in the top 5? I had a huge huge HUGE thing for him a little
bit ago before he broke my heart and "came out of the closet"... LOL! But I
still think he's a wonderful singer. Influential? Dunno about that
however... does not belong in the top 5.
Queen #2?? YESSSSSS!!!!!!! I love this band and they are very influential.
I also agree that the Stones should have been up in the top 5.
David Bowie... another artist I love to watch! Very influential.
Mariah Carey? Oh PUH LEEZE!! Influential???
Hendrix belongs in the top 10 at least and he's 17... I agree with this
gentleman, he inspired a generation of guitarists!!
There are some on here that I'm like what????
Whitney?? NO!
Phil Collins? Love him, but NO!
Simply Red?? Where did THAT come from?? NO!
Celine Dion.... NO WAY NO HOW!
LOL... but I think no list will ever satisfy everybody which is what's so
much fun. Great list though, once again.

Polly, loved all of your input. I agree totally with what you said about
the Beatles. They deserve to be in the # 1 spot, no doubt.
I also thought that Bruce should be higher up on that list.

Did you guys watch the D & M show on New Year's Eve? Dick Clark asked
Donny who he thought was the most influential musician. Donny said
probably Elvis...or the Beatles. Dick Clark quickly corrected him
that Elvis only sang and occasionally played guitar..but didn't write
any of his own music. DC said something to the effect of a "true"
musician. I think Elvis was extremely influential...changed the course
of our times with Rock and Roll...I would place him at the top with the
Beatles right behind him. But to me, there is a real distinction of
who or what a true musician is....and the Osmonds fit that criteria
quite well...someone who sings, plays multi-instruments and writes
their own music. Add to this the fact that they can dance...and
nothing beats them. And they also influenced many other artists.
Those artists will silently praise them...but never publicly. So..the
Osmonds are fortunate to have even made the cut with their bubblegum
image. And you can't tell this group they weren't influential...they
definitely influenced *my* life!

Beth, I have to agree with you. Of course, being from Memphis, y'all
KNOW I'm partial to Elvis. However, I still think he changed the face
of music in a way noone else has. He's the one who really defined rock
and roll. Before him there were guys like Pat Boone singing cute
little songs, standing stock-still in their grey suits. Elvis changed
everything. Without him, there wouldn't have been a path for the
Beatles or eventually the Osmonds. I also agree with whoever posted
that some of the names on the list are WAY out of order.

That's precisely why I said he should have ranked way higher than he did. I
said that even the Beatles looked to him for inspiration and influence. But
then where were Chuck Berry and Little Richard, like I said in my other

in my opinion as well.

Yes, I finally watched that last night, Sandra. Donny said Elvis and Frank
Sinatra. Marie said the Beatles.
Dotty, I think it was you that asked who was on the New Year's show. They
had Dick Clark on, talking to him, and they showed recaps of all the
musicicians that were on during the year. That was pretty cool. They
certainly had a lot of great musicians on the show. I could hear Donny say,
as they went to commercial, "Wow, that looked really impressive."
Pat Benatar was the last they showed, and D & M were saying how amazing she
was. That reminds me, she should be on the list too! Was she? I can't
remember.

Oh, and forgot to say the musical guest was a Spanish singer that I'm blank
on the name, and they also had Kenny G on, who plays that sax just
magically.

Just got an answer from the guy that originally posted this, that it was on
VH1 2 weeks ago, and the list was on the site.
I've checked VH1's schedule, and I don't see it being on again, but ya never
know.

You're right, Laura....Donny said Elvis and Frank Sinatra and Marie
said the Beatles. I'm not a fan of Frank's so I blanked that out, I
guess. And you know how my memory is. I still think without question
Elvis should be #1...cause like Vickie said...before him...they all
wore grey flannel and just stood still. And remember I said that lots
of artists were influenced by the Osmonds but just never say so....?
Well, on the repeat today...KC and JoJo said that they were influenced
by the Osmonds!!!! And I think it was Jay that said the Osmonds were
the first of the "boy bands"...so without them...there would be no
Jacksons...no BSB...etc.

No Donny and Marie here on New Years Eve. It's on an ABC affiliate here and
was pre empted for the round the world coverage of the millennium
celebrations.

: Did you guys watch the D & M show on New Year's Eve? Dick Clark asked
: Donny who he thought was the most influential musician. Donny said
: probably Elvis...or the Beatles. Dick Clark quickly corrected him
: that Elvis only sang and occasionally played guitar..but didn't write
: any of his own music. DC said something to the effect of a "true"
: musician. I think Elvis was extremely influential...changed the course
: of our times with Rock and Roll...I would place him at the top with the
: Beatles right behind him. But to me, there is a real distinction of
: who or what a true musician is....and the Osmonds fit that criteria
: quite well...someone who sings, plays multi-instruments and writes
: their own music. Add to this the fact that they can dance...and
: nothing beats them. And they also influenced many other artists.
: Those artists will silently praise them...but never publicly. So..the
: Osmonds are fortunate to have even made the cut with their bubblegum
: image. And you can't tell this group they weren't influential...they
: definitely influenced *my* life!

I forgot to mention they dedicated the show to their stage manager. They
did the dedication at the very end. Marie did the talking, probably because
Donny cries so easily over stuff like this. They've been friends with him
for 25 years, so d & m both started crying at the end of Marie's speech.
Pretty emotional. They showed some different pictures of him also. He was
only in his 60s.

Polly, your reasonings are almost profound. I am truly impressed and

it.

A lot of the list is totally cranky. I do agree with the remark made about
Take That taking the place held by Boyzone. Boyzone were totally influenced
by Take That, to the point where their early videos were so close to those
of Take That, they nearly got sued!! Take That started 5 years before
Boyzone and opened up the boyband market in Europe. And yes, you're bloody
right I was a fan!!! LOL!

Yeah I saw that too. Then they showed his headset just sitting on top of the
desk as the credits rolled. Very sad.
