MY OASIS WONDER DADS
Noel and Liam are both great fathers says mum Peggy
THE Irish mother of Oasis bad boys Liam and Noel Gallagher insists her rock
star sons are a pair of great dads.
Peggy Gallagher hit back at critics who have branded her boys "bad fathers".
Speaking from her home in Burnage, Manchester, she said: "Noel didn't really
want to talk about the recent newspaper reports but you could tell he was
hurt.
"He's very like me. He's a very private person and he keeps it all inside
when he's hurt, but to say he's a bad father is just wrong.
"He loves bathing Anais [his baby daughter] and reading to her, every aspect
of looking after her.
"He spends all the time he can with her, it's not easy for him.
"Meg [Mathews, Noel's estranged wife] has always been happy to let Anais
come up here and stay for a week but when stories get written that he's bad
you have to wonder.
"Noel is desperate to be a good father, he adores Anais."
Peggy, 53, has had to deal with the heartache of her sons' high-profile
marriages breaking up recently.
The romance between Liam, 27, and actress Patsy Kensit, 32, soured last
year.
This was quickly followed by news that Noel, 33, and Meg, 34, were
divorcing.
Despite this, Peggy, from Co Mayo, told how she wanted to have a normal
birthday party for her granddaughter.
She said: "To be honest, I don't see the point of spending money on a party
for a child, they don't understand it.
"What do they really get out of it? A family occasion where everyone is
there is much better, more special."
For her first birthday party 11 days ago, Anais travelled to Manchester,
played with her new toys and ate cakes and ice cream.
Her uncles Liam and Paul were both there, and Noel spent the afternoon
video-taping his little daughter's every move, much like any proud parent.
Peggy said: "It was a lovely day, a real family day.
"Both Lennon [Liam's child by Patsy] and Anais are only babies. They need to
feel loved."
The doting granny travels every week to London to spend Wednesday and
Thursday helping Liam look after Lennon.
She said: "As a grandparent you want to spend as much time as you can with
your grandchildren.
"It's always easier with them because you're less busy, less tired than you
were with your own children.
"I spoil both of them, bringing them little presents down to London and
taking them to the zoo or the park.
"I know my sons love their children but they have to do their jobs and they
travel a lot. I'm always happy to help out."
Anais, whose picture dominates Peggy's front room, is staying with Meg
Mathews' parents in Norfolk at the moment.
Peggy said: "Anais is a lovely child, very quiet, happy to sit around and
play with her toys.
"She looks like her dad at that age. Lennon's more boisterous and
affectionate.
"He's a typical boy and he always knows what he wants. He points at things
immediately or tries to pour himself something to drink or switch the TV on.
They're exactly like their fathers temperament-wise."
In defence of her younger son, Liam, Peggy said people simply don't get his
sense of humour. She added: "People don't really like Liam, do they?
"He's all over the papers because of his behaviour but Liam's always been
like that, he won't change for anyone.
"He's always saying to me, 'Mam, was I as bad as Lennon?' and I have to say,
'No, you were much worse'."
Peggy refused to comment on claims that Noel has cut off wife Meg's
allowance, or discuss their divorce settlement - rumoured to be pounds
2.5million. She said: "The problem is when you become famous there are
plenty of hangers-on.
"People who will tell you what they think you want to hear. It's hard not to
change when that happens.
"Noel was always very generous with his time and money, perhaps too
generous."
Peggy said she likes both her sons' new partners, describing All Saint
Nicole Appleton as "very bubbly - she has the same sense of humour as Liam
and it helps she's his age.
"Sara [Noel's girlfriend Sara MacDonald] is a nice girl, very calm.
"Patsy was lovely too, I could talk about anything to her. Perhaps it was
because she didn't have a mother any more and she needed someone to talk to.
"Meg has her own parents who are very nice people and are always there for
her."
Despite their larger than life image and rock 'n' roll lifestyle, Peggy
insisted that her sons have strong family values.
She said: "It's so important that people understand where Noel and Liam come
from, their background, their history, their family.
"Maybe it's because I come from an Irish family and that sort of thing's
important in Ireland.
"Noel has brought Anais up here regularly and he can't wait until she's
older so he can take her to Ireland.
"He loved going over to stay with his relations in Mayo when he was younger,
you'd always have to sleep where you could and it was a bit rough and ready
but the boys had a great time.
"Of course I worry about my grandchildren being put through their parents'
divorce. I worry all the time, I'm the world's worst worrier.
"That's why it's so important to me that Anais and Lennon spend time
together - they're only four months apart in age.
"It would be terrible if they didn't know each other when they were growing
up."
