Police have confirmed that they are investigating an incident that took
place at one of Oasis’ homecoming gigs at Lancashire Cricket Ground
over the weekend, after a former acquaintance of Noel Gallagher’s
claimed he was assaulted by Oasis bouncers.
The man in question, Paul Ashbee, claimed he was beaten up as bouncers
threw him out of the executive box. He had previously attempted to sue
the band for not crediting him as their founder – he used to be Liam
Gallagher’s boss at a Formula One car company and introduced him to
original Oasis guitarist Bonehead.
Ashbee claimed that he was sitting in an executive box at the venue with
Manchester City footballers on Sunday, September 15, when Noel charged
into the box and ordered that he be evicted. A witness told a tabloid
newspaper that the incident unfolded as thus: “Noel pointed to this
guy with the players and said, ‘Get that c**t out of here now! Throw
him out. He’s a f**king c**t!’ ”
“Five heavies went into the box and dragged him out and down the
stairs. The City players couldn’t believe their eyes,” the onlooker
continued. Ashbee claimed that Oasis’ bouncers gave him a good hiding
and he was treating with painkillers at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
“I don’t really want to talk about it because I’m very upset,”
Ashbee told reporters. “Noel was being abusive. It was frightening and
I’m seeking legal advice. They were roughing me up and he was saying,
‘Get rid of him’.”
A spokesperson for Oasis, however, said: “He (Ashbee) was in a box
when Noel saw him and said he didn’t want him there because of what
has happened in the past. Security asked him to leave and they escorted
him out. We are not aware of any injuries and the matter is in the hands
of the police.”
Manchester police have simply, that they are “investigating an
allegation of assault at the venue”. Watch this space for further
details.
