Conversly, Liam's toned some of it down from DM to WTSMG, as far as live,
I don't really know. As far as media coverage, who controls that? The
media!

I'm sure the Roses weren't _totally_ original. Every band uses ideas
from others, they use what works. As far as credit, yeah, it's nice
to at least acknowledge the source of something unoriginal. Big deal
anyway, as long as they're having fun doing what they do, it's more
than most do...

No one gives a shit what you think, I hope you die horribley in fact, and
am confident that you play the guitar (if at all) like a gibbon. Noel is
pretty good actually. Can you write million-selling songs? No? No? Well
FUCK OFF, chimp-boy.

I never rated George much as a lead guitarist..his rythym work was
fine..but I always found his solos..especially the early ones..rather
strained. he did get better later on when he did slide guitar tho:)

Fancy yourself as a bit of a critic then do you?

It works though, doesn't it. Maybe that's what *really* pisses you
off? Besides, who's comparing? Noel's the first to admit his limited
ability, naming both John Squire and Graham Coxon from Blur among
others as far better guitarists. So your point was?
>The Drummer for "WHAT'S THE STORY....." is particularly shite,

Now I *know* you've got your head up your arse. You *are* Tony

Yeah, Bonehead and Guigs are *never* out of the news eh?

Yeah right, that explains the Roses lack of ideas for so long, Oasis
stole them all, of course!
>Oasis picked up so many great ideas in the presence of the Roses,
>which definatly come through in their live performances, but not on
>their shite album. And do Oasis give any credit to Roses in any of

Erm, yes they do actually, read many have you? They namecheck them all
the time, citing them as MAJOR influences on their work.
Perhaps if the Roses had shifted off their fat arses and DONE
something during those five years, they could have had *some* claim to
their crown. As it was, the spotlight was well and truly stolen by
Oasis, and good on them that's what I say. All this wasn't handed to
them on a plate you know, they've worked damn hard for their success,
a concept totally unknown to the Roses. Don't get me wrong, I love
both bands, but the Roses ultimate demise was *totally*
self-inflicted. Same goes for Oasis' success, they wanted it so they
went out and GOT it.

Glad someone agrees about Steve Craddock, but, as brilliant as a songwriter
as Noel is, he's still second to Lennon-McCartney! Well, and Elvis Costello.
But Noel's definitely up there!

Yes, I do have some spare time on my hands, so I've decided to invade your
newsgroup and voice my opinions. I really don't give a shit if they're

Listen, we like them. We're not alone in this. If all you can think of
doing with your spare time is slagging off other people's fave bands
just for the hell of it, it's you who needs a life.

this newsgroup's not called alt.fan.music.oasis, it's called
alt.music.oasis. so i would think y'all could deal with a little
dissenting opinion. if Oasis were that great, would you have to care
what anyone else thinks?
so here's my question: what do the fans think is so great about them?
i don't think they're very interesting myself. they seem to be trying
to sound like sixties music or something but lack all the neat
psychedelic noises that made this music interesting. and what's with
some of the lyrics...they sound like they may have just been made up as
they recorded the songs. i wanna know what a 'wonderwall' is. what
'champagne supernover' means.
and the last complaint i have about Oasis is that the singer's voice is
really screechy. i would use headphones and tapes, if i had them, but i
don't right now. recently got all my tapes stolen. so i have to listen
to Live 105 (the SF 'alternative' station) and it's like they play Oasis
every hour on the hour so i guess that's why i get frustrated by them.
even songs i LIKE a LOT get tiresome at some point when played once an
hour or so.
sorry for ranting, and taking an unpopular viewpoint here. but i don't
see any reason why i shouldn't. you're cordially invited to tell me to
stick it up my cornhole and twist, if you wish... :}

I've been an Oasis freak ever since I got my first taste of them from
the
"Definately Maybe" album. My room mate was a student rep for Sony, and he
got via UPS a big box o' Oasis CD's, so I managed to snarf one. I was
instantly
impressed.
American rock music these days seems to fall into one of three
catagories:
"alternative" nay-sayers like Pearl Jam or NIN who dread the day they ever
became famous and who seem to think nothing is right with the world;
rap/dance
acts like Coolio or Snoop whose songs are becoming the disco of the 90's;
and
sappy balladeers like Celine Dion who are... well... sappy beyond belief.
In the middle of this all-time low in the history of American rock
music comes
Oasis, a British band who have revived the concept of the *rock* star!
They're a throw-back to the days when Keith Moon would drive cars into
hotel swimming pools... when rock stars were *rock stars*.
Oasis' songs are without a doubt the best songwriting being churned out
today anywhere in the world. Songs like "Wonderwall" and "...Anger" will
be radio staples a decade from now and longer. Will any radio stations be
playing "industrial" then? Not likely.
Plus, Oasis are great to their fans. When they release a single, they
make certain to include two or three bonus songs not available on their
albums. Often
times these bonus songs are as good or better than the latest Peal Jam or
STP
single! Sure, they had some problems last fall and had to cancel some US
shows, but I still say they're a fan's band.
If you love "industrial" music so much, go post to an industrial
newsgroup and complain there. But rest assured, you'll be hearing these
Oasis tunes "on the hour every hour" for a great number of years. Why?
Because they're classics.

Fair point, but you have to realise that we've been cursed on a few
occasions with plagues of little brats who say 'Oasis SUX and if you like
them you're sad'. Because of this we are paranoid about anyone who
expresses negative views.

I can't tell you what I think is great about them, but I just think there's
something great about them. It's something to do with being loud and
simplistic and a bit mad and proud of it. The term 'In Yer Face' comes to
mind. Also you won't have heard some of the songs like Listen Up or D'Yer
Wanna Be a Spaceman where Noel proves that he really IS a great songwriter,
even though he never makes sense.
I don't find them at all sixties. But I may be blinded by all the
modern-day amps and effects. There are some riffs that were originally
Beatles (and some bits from REM, The Roses, The Levellers, Gary Glitter!
etc) but the overall _sound_ is totally different and pretty unique.
Champagne Supernova is, of course, gibberish. But that doesn't stop people
constantly asking what one is. To the annoyance of my militant friend
Pauline.
I am a firm supporter of Gibberish in lyric writing. Many of the best
lyrics are gibberish which make half-sense or no sense at all but still
sound cool. Examples below:
"Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail" (Floyd - Waters)
"I could park a juggernaut in your mind" (Roses)
"I'll give you anything, everything if you want things" (Floyd - Syd)
The entire of 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' (Beatles)

Singers voices are a personal thing. There are many perfectly good bands I
find un-listenable just because I hate the sound made by the singer. Radio
sucks because they overplay songs until you're sick of them and also
because they play lots of teeny crap 'cos the record companies tell them
to.
Hope you catch the bastard who nicked your tapes - that really is low! If
somebody nicked my CD collection I'd probly kill myself that afternoon.
