Sorry for the delay before posting this today. I'm looking for some
quick info on stuff though... specifically, can anyone send me the
catalogue number for the new David Bowie single? I haven't been able
to get ahold of it yet.

Much appreciated.

As usual, all sent information is welcomed.

this thing in the first place. They all did a thoroughly excellent job
on it.

ADDITIONAL: All told this CD appears to be merely a collection of a number

is: DPRO 01853-99. There is a Nothing label on the back and on the CD.

5. PHANTOM NIN SONGS
============================================================================

Phantom songs and remixes are those that were never released, legally
or at all. A number of these can be found on bootlegs, and i suggest
that you go to Demands Devotion, an RoIO discography, if you would like to
figure out where to get them...

Twist ~ This is available on the Purest Feeling, Demos and Remixes and
Welcome to the Hatemachine RoIOs, as well as bootlegs of the live at
Irving Plaza show (NYC, 10-31-88) (for example, Shut Up Or Throw Up,
and Irving Plaza).

Maybe Just Once ~ This is available on the Purest Feeling, and Welcome
to the Hatemachine RoIOs. It was also performed live at the Irving
Plaza show (NYC, 10-31-88). (for example, Shut Up Or Throw Up, and
Irving Plaza).

Purest Feeling ~ This is available on the Purest Feeling and Welcome
To The Hatemachine RoIOs.

Intro To Sanctified (aka Slate) ~ This is available on the Purest
Feeling and Welcome To The Hatemachine RoIOs.

Intro To Terrible Lie ~ This was performed on the 1990 Pretty Hate
Machine tour, and available on bootlegs such as Chicago Metro
(7-27-90).

Now I'm Nothing ~ This was Performed on the 1991 Lollapalooza/Now I'm
Nothing tours, available on RoIOs such as Solid Gold Hell.

Last (butch vig remix) ~ This track was originally remixed for Fixed
but removed from the final track listing. The ending of it ended up
being used in 'Throw This Away' and credited to Butch Vig. The
complete mix originally popped up on the internet as a file,
NIN_LAST.AIFF, available by ftp from CYBERDEN.COM. It disappeared from
the site quite some time ago. It appeared as a hidden bonus track on
the Erase Me: The Tainted Touch of Trent's Caress cassette compilation
organized by a few alt.music.ninnies: David D. Yuhnke, Michael Roston,
Mr. Orange, Squirtis, and csy.

Gave Up (Coil remix) ~ This was used in movie Young Americans; it is
faster than the Fixed version and it uses the same sound template,
according to John Balance of Coil. The Fixed version appears on
soundtrack, but the version in the movie is not available anywhere.

Reptile (3rd Dave Ogilvie Mix) ~ This was rumoured to be a hidden
track (11 - Reptilian) on the Japanese release of Halo 10, but that
track is the same as the version on Halo 7.

Lovegun ~ This Kiss remake is believed to exist, but is currently not
available in any format. It was intended for the Kiss My Ass tribute
CD.

Eraser (a version with worms)
The Downward Spiral (a gilded sickness)
The Downward Spiral (full blown) ~ These three tracks were rumoured to
be remixes by Coil, but it is speculated that these mixes (or elements
thereof) are the ones that are actually on Further Down The Spiral
with different mix names.

Live In Me
Something Blue ~ These two tracks first appears on the Rusty Nails ][
RoIO. The first was labelled as (Old Unreleased) and the second as (New
Unreleased). The first is simply a simple keyboard bridge and the
second is a "mix" of The Downward Spiral that consists of muting the
music so that the lyrics are more audible and then playing a simple
keyboard melody overtop. It is speculated that both of these tracks
were actually created by The Hitman (the person who is credited with
the CD).

Metal (a gary numan cover) ~ never released in any format. In an
interview in the April 1995 issue of details magazine, the recording
of this track is mentioned. Nothing has been heard or seen of this
track since. This was supposed to have been recorded for a Gary Numan
Tribute album, but is not included on the track listing.

6. Trent Reznor's Work With Other Artists
============================================================================

Artist Work Notes
------ ---- -----

1000 Supernaut CDS Rumours abound concerning this release.
Homo The original version of this song
DJ'S contains intact Trent Reznor vocals.
However, at the time of the recording
TVT kicked up a fuss about one of its
most profitable acts being involved
in a side project. So, the track was
redone, and released as a single (this
version can also be found on the Black
Sabbath tribute album "Nativity in Black).
Official, the vocals on this track were
listed as being Al Jorgensen; however,
it is widely speculated that the vocals
are the original Reznor vocals, distorted
from the original recording. The
original recording itself can be found on
the Wax Trax Black box release.
(First Track on the First CD of that set)
Trent is credited with guitar on all
releases of this track.

Tori Under Trent did the backing vocals on
Amos The Pink "Past the Mission".

Butthole Who Was in My Room Trent did a remix of this.
Surfers Last Night Promo It is also on the Wooden Song EP;
it is also available on the Volume 8
compilation referred to as the Tate or
Tot remix.

David The Heart's Filthy Trent and David Ogilvie remixed the
Bowie Lesson "alt." version of this song, which
appears on both the US and UK releases
of this single. The track is 5:20
in length. It was released domestically
on Virgin Records, 1995, serial number
7243 8 38518 2 9 V25F-38518. It was
created at South Beach Stuidos,
Miami Beach. There is also a promo for
"The Heart's Filthy Lesson" whose serial
number is PRCDO-11005.

David I'm Afraid Of Nine Inch Nails remixed this
Bowie Americans track a number of times for
the single release. The mixes were
created in Nothing Studios in New
Orleans.

Crunch-0- Caution Do From the credits: "data supplied by
Matic Not Play Trent Reznor".

Curve BlackerThree- Trent did a remix of "Missing Link" (5.00)
TrackerTwo called "Screaming Bird Mix" (6.25 ),
credited to Flood and T.Reznor. The
remixes appear on the Missing Link EP
(Promo CD5, 1993, Anxious Records Ltd /
Charisma Records America, PRO-14116).

Garbage Garbage In the liner notes for the Garbage album,
Trent Reznor is mentioned in the special
thanks between "Puff" and "Queen Helen".
This probably has to do with the story
about how the band was named. Specifically,
Butch Vig does a remix for Fixed, and
Reznor likes it not, but uses the end.
Someone describes the remix as "Garbage"
and Vig says "So be it." Some fans see
this as the first Garbage track.

KMFDM Light (CDS) Trent did a remix "Light" called
"Fat Back Dub". The track is 7:29
It was created at Pig studios, and
released in 1994 on Wax Trax records.
The serial number is TVT-8712-2.

Lucky Communique EP This 1988 release includes Trent on
Pierre saxaphone and backup vox

Machines of Burn (like Re-produced by Trent Reznor.
Loving brilliant On Mammoth Records (1992).

Marilyn Beautiful Trent was heavily involved in this release.
Manson People This single was produced by Trent Reznor and
David Ogilvie, and co-produced by Mr.
Manson. Trent is credited with writing
some of the music for track IV on CDII
("Deformography") in addition to playing
additional guitar on the track. He is
also credited with mellotron on track IV
on CDI ("Cryptorchid"). Chris Vrenna is
credited with 'skull' on track III on CDII
("Snake Eyes And Sissies") as 'Podboy'.

released by TVT Records but does not
feature the NIN tracks.

Various Hot Wired Monster Wish appears on this.

Various Seven A remix of Closer appears in the opening
Artists credits of this film. This remix is based
heavily on the Coil Remix of Closer

minute into the track and fades out
before the end. In the words of John
Balance, the remixer: "Actually, it was
an independent remix done exclusively for
the film. Based heavily on our Precursor
Mix of Closer. We don't recieve a credit in
the movie or video release which pisses us
off even to this very day. The Lazerdisc
DOES credit us in some way. I hate the way
the film industry pisses all over the
sources they derive their inspiration
from."

Various Sound Decisions Head Like a Hole appears on this.

Various Spin Sampler Head Like a Hole, Down In It, Sin,
Artists (promo cassette) and The Only Time are on this. (1989)

on the soundtrack, but rather the original

7.b) Natural Born Killers
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the story goes, Oliver Stone heard Nine Inch Nail's "Something I Can
Never Have", and decied that someday, somehow, he would get Trent Reznor
to work on the soundtracks for one of his movies. When it came time to
do Natural Born Killers, Oliver Stone contacted Trent to see if he was
Trent was. Trent wrote the song "Burn" for the movie, as well as producing
the soundtrack itself. In the course of producing the soundtrack, he watched
the movie fifty times to get the full effect. The end result is an intricate
and mesmerizing collage of music and dialogue from the movie.

8. Video Clips and Other Stuff
============================================================================

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.a) The Videos
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order of release date:

DOWN IN IT (There are two versions of this... a short one, and a
long one that just basically has the same shots, for lack of a
better word, stuttering...)

HEAD LIKE A HOLE (It has been rumoured that there are 3 versions
of this...)

SIN (unreleased)

PINION (the version in Broken movie is slightly different from the
released version)

WISH (there are edited and unedited MTV versions of this: the
edited is sans the obscenity and little outro of the cage being
stormed. The Broken movie version has parts of the "snuff" film
mixed in)

LAST (Rumours abound... please see the note regarding the Broken
movie)

HELP ME I AM IN HELL (Again, please see the note on the Broken movie)

HAPPINESS IN SLAVERY (i know this must have been released
commercially at one point because it has shown up in the vaults of
Much Music... please see the note on the Broken movie)

GAVE UP (Unreleased... please refer to the note on the Broken movie)

MARCH OF THE PIGS - Original (Not released...) this was directed
by Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson of Coil. It was supposed to be
the first of Christopherson's series of four TDS videos, but that
idea was terminated when this video was trashed. Supposedly it
contained images of rooms filled with meat breathing, there have
also been rumours of Midgets[??]. Christopherson and John said in
an interview [Boing Boing I think], that Trent trashed it because
it would not have been releasable... and Trent is typically caught
between what he and record company wants...

MARCH OF THE PIGS (MTV version, shot by Christopherson after the
original was abandoned)

CLOSER (Both edited and un-edited versions are known to exist)

BURN (Unedited and edited)

HAPPINESS IN SLAVERY (a live from the Woodstock performance, good
sound if I do say so myself, better than was available on PPV.
This is available on the Woodstock video that was legally
released)

HURT (according to a person was involved in the filming of the
tour: "'hurt' was indeed filmed in Omaha (February 13, 1995) with
a smaller, 'controlled' crowd...merely for the ambience. it seems
there could be a few visuals taken from the Dallas (February 11,
1995) show......so....? the sound is definitely from Omaha, but
the visuals could be a combination of both, meaning that some of
what we shot in Omaha wasn't usable for some reason or another."

THE PERFECT DRUG This video was directed by Mark Romanek (who
also did the video for "Closer"). It involves shots of Trent doing
his best to look like the Devil: in hot tubs, standing
dramatically in the wind, on top of a bear rug. It also has the
same sort of imagery as the Closer video: women with hair
apparently braided together, and a young looking victorian person
all come into play. It is a very well done video.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.b) The Broken Movie:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trent produced this short film with Peter 'Sleazy' Christoherson of COIL.
It was not released due to the gratutitous violence which it contains, but
it has somehow made its way into the hands of fans everywhere. It was
distributed by a certain unmentionable Los Angeles record store for
awhile, and has since recieved wide distribution as a bootleg. It
contained a synthesized snuff film, which was likely created by
Christopherson. Interspersed through out this film are the legally
released videos for the songs from Broken. Also present are the videos
for Help Me I Am In Hell (which appears as a blank black screen), and a
video for Gave Up. The latter depicts the killing coming to a climax, and
it containts shots of a television screen, on which Trent's face can be
seen, alternatively singing and hidding behind his hands. A certain
individual posted to alt.music.nin, claiming he had a letterboxed version
which included videos for Last, and an actual video for help me i am in
hell. . .. However, the folks on amn angered this person, who then went
on to send all of the orders back. So shall never know if he was truthful
or not. For an excellent essay regarding broken, that will dispel many of
the misconceptions, link to Broken Is Not Snuff, written by C-Ko Linde:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.c) Additional Video Factoids
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reznor can be seen performing Suck
with Pigface members in the PIGFACE video Glitch

In the movie "The Light of Day," Trent can be seen performing a
synthesized version of Buddy Holly's "True Love Ways" with a fictional
group known as the Problems. He plays the synth and does backup vocals.

Trent can be seen in Lead Into Gold's video of "Faster Than Light" (Lead
to Gold is a side project of Ministry's Paul Barker). He is playing guitar
(although, apparently, not really on audio), and is wearing a plaid shirt
(gasp!). My source, Wate...@aol.com, beleives that this video was filmed
the day after the HLAH video, which included Martin Atkins on drums.
Martin apparently invited Trent to tag along at the next shoot . The video
is on one of the "Black Box" compilations.

It was rumoured that a live video may be released documenting the TDS
tours. Much of the footage comes from the shows in Dallas, Omaha, and New
Orleans near the end of the second tour. (Corrections appreciated). I
have also heard that the secret club dates that occurred after the Outside
tour were taped... this leads to a suspicion that this footage will be
used in a live video. It was originally intended that the film would be
finished 3 months after the TDS tour was completed... All i know is that
the video has been put on hold indefinitely, and right now it looks as
though its never going to com out, because Trent et al did not like how
the original live footage turned out. Anyways, the director is Simon
Maxwell, who apparently has had previous dealings with NIN.

9. Other Official NIN stuff
============================================================================

Digizine CD ROM
The fall 1995 premier issue of Digizine came with a CD ROM
containing a feature on Trent, including a bio, a discography,
video .avi of hurt and closer, and sound clips from the albums.

Manufacturing Insanity

Deconstucting Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor

Nine Inch Tales
Tap Trent's head to hear his thoughts
sound bites with text of interview
Happiness In Slavery video

Aural fixations
US discography with sound bits from selected songs

Storming the studio
Interactive stuff (not active on the demo)

The end?
Clip of the "Broken" video only about 10 seconds
shows a guy stepping on a trap door with noose around his
neck, he falls through and falls for a long time, then you
see the rope snap and dust flies off it. While he is dropping
he has an evil grin on his face.

Goldmine Magazine
The discography was used as a source of information for an article
about NIN that appeared in the August 4, 1995 issue of this
magazine. I beleive that they virtually reprinted the whole
thing.

Quake by ID Software
Trent did the sound effects and created the music for this video game.
The music is very mellow and ambient. One track starts out a lot like
Pinion and then goes into windlike sounds with a slow bass keyboard
melody. One track sounds like the TDS sound, quite harsh and fast.

The Track Lengths are:

1. 3:43 CD-ROM track (the game itself)
2. 5:08 Music
3. 2:26 "
4. 8:20 "
5. 6:06 "
6. 7:24 "
7. 8:39 "
8. 5:36 "

10. Remakes and Covers of Nine Inch Nails songs
============================================================================

*Gasp* you mean somebody has dared to cover a nin song?

Artist Release Notes
====== ======= =====

Trixter Terrible Lie This two song single contains the remake of
the NIN song of the same title. (5:28) in
length, track 1.

Trixter Undercovers This album holds the same song as the above.
Track 3.

Nine Inch Closer to Hogs This is a parody cover of "Closer to God"
Richards It is a 4 track single, consisting of the
3 mixes of the parody song CtH, as well as
one unrelated track.
This was released on Hi-Art/Shock Records.

Wierd Al Bad Hair Day Wierd Al included "Closer" in the
Yankovic "Alternative Polka". An excerpt of
"Closer" appears in the song. The music
is different than Trent's version (it is a
polka!), and the sound of a horn replaces
the word 'fuck'.

Devo Supercop Devo covered "Head Like a Hole" for
Soundtrack this 1996 movie.

Devo Head Like A This is the promo for Devo's cover of
Hole (Promo) this song, released to radio stations.

Maxwell Maxwell MTV Closer is covered on this EP and titled
Unplugged "Gotta Get Closer". It is apparently a
bluesy, gospel-type version. The main
chorus was changed from "I want to fuck
you like an animal" to "I want to love
you like an animal".

============================================================================
11. Rumours and Needed Information
============================================================================

If you have any rumours or new information to add to this list, let me know.

The newest release pending is the Closure double video, slated to be
released on November 25, 1997. The video set will apparently have a
catalogue number of INTV2-90157 and will contain one video of live
performances, and one of the unedited promotional videos.

Well, the promo for The Perfect Drug has been released, what about a single?
The Perfect Drug Versions is Halo 11. Promos for this have circulated
(including a 12" DJ only promo). It has 5 tracks, and is about 35 minutes
long. It looks the same as the radio promo release except that it is
titled 'NINE INCH NAILS "THE PERFECT DRUG" VERSIONS'. It is rumoured that
the UK Import version will feature the mix by Aphrodite (which was not on
the North American release). This rumour appears to be incorrect as the
import versions found thus far are exactly the same as the North American
version with the exception that they contain the original version of the
song as well.

Apparently, in the UK, Levis advertisements are running with music very
much like nine inch nails's running in the background. At the start of the
advertisement, a voice whispers "I am the voice inside your head", and the
advertisement features two chained men fleeing from an unknown persuer.
According to Ulf Lagercrantz (u...@alex-trafikskola.se), the song used is
The Art of Self Destruction (Part One)".

As always, any information you have on upcoming releases would be
appreciated. Just to dispel the rumours, Halo 12 will not be entitled
Impossible Pain". This album name, and all other information surrounding
it, is part of a parody web page created by Blackrose. At this time, the
name of Halo 12 is not known, nor is there any real information available
on it, save that it is in the works.

For your information, the Fisted Boxed Set is not an official release.
That is why it is not listed in this discography. It contains the UK March
of the Pigs single, the UK Closer to God single the UK Fixed single. As
well, it contains three low quality buttons and a low quality t-shirt.
Definitely not worth your money.

Trent Reznor, along with Danny Lohner and Charlie Clouser, are starting
a band called tapeworm. the idea behind it is that Reznor will be more of
the singer/producer only, while Clouser and Lohner will write the music.
at the same time Reznor will still write songs for nin. see the february
1997 article in raygun mag.

Also, information regarding the various formats (ie, Vinyl) that the Halos
may have been released in would be appreciated.

Information on any non-nin work by Trent is always a good inclusion in his
document.

I would love to hear of anything else that you think should be included in
his discography. This document is only made valid by your input.

Please email your info to Alex, and you too will have your name added to
the following list.
