For those who don't have access to our amazing British tabloids, you might
like to know that several (Sun, Mirror, Daily Mail) have a front-page
story today (13/11/96) about a punch-up between Peter Hook and his
estranged wife Caroline Aherne's 'new toyboy lover' Matt Bowers. The
occasion was the opening of Bill Wyman's Sticky Fingers restaurant in
Manchester - about 400 VIPs were present, including Aherne (the comedian
'Mrs Merton), Hook, Bowers (a Granada TV sports researcher), and Hook's
'new love', 25-year old Rebecca Jones. (Jones is further described in the
Sun as 'a vocalist in Hooky's new group, Monaco,' and it is claimed that
she was showing off a new diamond ring to fellow guests minutes before the
fight broke out.)

Hook apparently filed for divorce last week. Rebecca described how the
fight started - 'Caroline came over and started giving Peter grief. He
told her that he was doing all his talking through their lawyers. She went
away, then the boyfriend came over, said 'you're out of order,' and just
hit him.' (She added 'Caroline has been ringing Peter late at night and
sounds the worse for drink. He has told her he doesn't want to talk about
it.') The two men exchanged punches and insults before a large club
bouncer named Leroy seperated them. In the course of the fight, Hook ended
up kneeing Aherne in the belly as she tried to get between them - cue some
rather painful-looking photographs.

Hook and Aherne met at the Hacienda in 1993 and were married in July 1994
at the Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel in Las Vegas. After the wedding
Hook's ex-lover Iris Bates, mother of their two children, called Hook a
'serial love cheat.'

After Aherne broke up with Hook, she moved in with her mother, saying
'I'll never love anyone else like I love my Hooky,' but his band Hooky and
the Boys have been dropped from the next series of the Mrs Merton
Show.(Presumably Hook's mother, who has also appeared on the show, will
also be missing.)

Hook, in typically emollient mood, summed up the incident: 'If I see him
again I'll kill him. For his sake he should thank God for Leroy.'

Would someone please, PLEASE make him go on tour again???
