I also believe it was live (look at how nervous they all seem to be! At
one point you can see Stephen's fingers shaking as they hover above the
keyboard). In any case, it is a great, >great< video for my favorite New
Order song of all time.

P.S.: I like to think that the shadowy figure in the doorway is Ian Curtis
(or at least, the approving >>spirit<< of Ian Curtis). It even looks like
him (a bit)!!
I always thought it was Jonathan "Silence of the Lambs" Demme...

Odd. When i showed this video to my little brother he said "I bet thats
their old singer's ghost." I would like to believe that, but I really
think it is Rob Gretton.

Actually isn't Baker the bearded long-haired bloke sitting
in the control room ??
Excellent video, that.

An edit of the live 9-minute video version was released on a U.S.
promo 12" on Qwest records. The full version is on the Substance
video. MTV plays (or used to play) a severely edited version.
Jonathan Demme, who directed Silence of the Lambs, was responsible for
this gem video.
The issue of exactly who's in the doorway was never settled in this
group.
J. Rizzo (not sorrs)
The guy in the doorway is Arthur Baker, who worked with New Order on
Confusion and co-wrote Thieves Like Us.
I love the video for The Perfect Kiss: the white lighting, Gilbert looking
absolutely stunning, the concentration on Sumner's face as he taps his
cowbell, the honesty of the whole performance... Perhaps another factor
which makes this such a good clip is that the sound is recorded live. It
seems amazing to me that NO can perform such a detailed, layered song live.

Also, i'm not impressed with the electronic site... I mean..you look at the
lyrics and their not even sure if there the right words or not, they
obviously havent consulted with electronic at all.

This is coming from sunny Singapore. I'm Daniel and a huge New Order/ Joy
Division fan. I've been listening to them since the early 1980s
I love Thieves like us and Perfect kiss most. I hope somebody replies 'cos
there are few people who really appreciate NO over here these days.
Cheers

The actual person standing in the doorway shaking his head I believe is
Terry, one of their longstanding tour crew members. (Responsible for
taking care of the sequencers, synths, etc). I have read that the band
acknowledge the ghostly image perhaps ressembles Ian...then again we all
know what those buggers are like when it comes to their little inside
jokes!
