OT: Nominating "The Greatest Canadian"

Until May 16, the CBC is soliciting nominations for the "Greatest Canadian
Of All Time." http://www.cbc.ca/greatest/index.html Names like Pierre
Trudeau, Alexander Graham Bell, Marshall McLuhan and Celine Dion (ugh) are
being bandied about. Out of left field however, an prankster named Jesse
Brown has begun his own campaign to be voted into the final list of ten
nominees: http://www.jesseisthegreatest.ca

Claiming that he "ate a whole pie once" and comparing himself to Muhammad
Ali "but without all the boxing," Brown promises that if he wins, like any
great Canadian, he would leave Canada.

And since when is Alexander Graham Bell a Canadian ?

Mr. Bell was born on 3rd March, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. AFAIK
Scotland is NOT in Canada.

What about the rock musician Bryan Adams ? He's a Canadian.

Hey!
Let's not forget that old British Commonwealth connection - surely we got
*some* benefits with membership - besides the English decoder ring.

I would say the young Alexander became a naturalized citizen by virtue of
spending most of his life here, and on his Cape Breton Island estate -
interestingly enough, chosen for its similarity to the Scottish landscape.
Whether he adopted us or the other way around, Canadians have long been
proud of our association - well, except for occasionally cursing "damn
Bell!" when the phone rings at an inopportune time (like during Stanley Cup
for example).

Otherwise, every elementary-school kid in this country knows the whole...
"Watson. Come here. I want you!"-story... (and even joked about it). Alex
is part of our heritage in a very big way - and besides, he's buried here
so if we want to nominate him as Greatest Canadian, I think it should be
okay. It *is* an honour after all.

We acquired him as part of a three-way deal just before the trade deadline.
The Americans got to keep William Shatner, and Scotland acquired Kirk's
engineer, Scotty.
