On the off-chance you're not ignoring me, too,
Uninstall the version you are using and delete its folders in
Program Files.
Get the version I got from here:
http://www.winmx4u.com/setup.html
If it's still there. No patches, no hosts files to fool with,
works fine (on XP).

Did you uninstall the version you had before the recovery and
delete its folders before installing 3.54?
