Hi all

just installed a DVD RW+/- in my pc.

Ive got -

An AVI file
Nero6

I want to burn the AVI to a DVD disc, then stick it in my (multi region) DVD
player, and watch it.

What software do I need to purchase to do this?

All help appreciated.

Si

I don't have a DVD burner myself - though I can't imagine that there's
no software written for that format. I've got Nero sotware that burns
avi's to VCD, so you should be able to find something that will burn to
a standard used by DVD. When you bought your new DVD drive, did it
come with any software? You probably have the means to convert your
stuff already. You may not need to buy anything, since there's tons of
freeware on the internet. Just do a google web search for .avi DVD
burn.

TMPGEnc will convert divx/xvid AVI and several audio formats to
MPEG2 demuxed streams or system file which in turn needs to be
authored. TMPEGEnc also makes an authoring program. Last time
I checked, the two packages together were about US$100. For
about US$63 you can buy a Philips DVD player that will play MANY
downloaded AVIs, MPGs, JPGs, and MP3, whether they be burned to
DVD or CD media.

Not only will the latter alternative save a few dollars but it
will save countless hours of learning, agony, and poor results.

In Nero Smartstart point to PHOTO AND VIDEO and select MAKE YOUR OWN DVD
VIDEO.
This will open NeroVision Express. Alternatively, you can start Nero Vision
Express from a shortcut in the Nero folder on the Start Menu

Main Screen
Click MORE at the bottom.

If you only have 1 file to burn, you can remove the check mark from CREATE
MENU ON DISC. This is useful if you have more than 1 clip and want to create
a Menu when the disc is first inserted.

Click VIDEO OPTIONS.

On the General Tab make sure PAL is selected for UK. Even if your original
source file is NTSC, Nero will convert it for PAL Playback. I've done it in
reverse and it works well.

Having set those options all you basically need to do is ad your video file
in the top box ( Ad video files and then browse for it's location ) and
click NEXT on each of the following windows until you get to the final
screen. BURN OPTIONS.

In this window I personally prefer to Write the file to a HARD DISK FOLDER
and then use Nero to burn to DVD as the encoding process is quite processor
intensive and unless you've got a good processor and quite a bit of RAM, it
can be quite a drain on the computer's resources. Alternatively, you can
write directly to the DVD by using the BURN TO option under set parameters.

For your first attempt, I'd suggest just letting it run on it's own until
you see how it goes. Depending on the size of the avi file and the power of
your processor, it could take several hours. Once you've got the routine
down, you could set it before you go to bed and get the finished disk when
you get up.

If you'd prefer to try the WRITE TO HARD DISK FOLDER , which is my preferred
method and are unsure of how to use Nero to burn the results, let me know
and I'll type you up a few pointers.

Regards
Barney

Nero 6 burns dvd from AVI directly, incluing the formatting menu creations
etc no other software is required, for the first few run thrus use the nero
express wizard interface till you learn the steps
