is there a website which spells out the improvements/changes made
between each generation of iPod?

Im in the market for a used iPod (dont want or need a new one, as I'm
going to be using it in an environment where theres a good chance it
will get damaged or even stolen).

Doesnt have to be huge capacity, but more than the upper 4gb ceiling of
a nano.

Just wondered if there are particular generations of ipods to avoid (eg
the battery issue)..

ta ;)

Apple has a chart that shows all the different models they've made. It
doesn't go into a great deal of detail, but would be a good starting
point:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688

I'm sure that each model is explained in detail on other pages at
Apple's site, but might have to search for them one-by-one. You could
also look at the Apple fan sites like iPodLounge.com.

The models made in the last couple of years are probably your best bet,
as Apple has made improvements with each generation. But remember that
recharable batteries gradually lose their ability to hold a charge, so
with a used model you'll probably have reduced battery life, and may
even have to install a new battery sooner or later (I think it's around
$60 for a mail-order battery, but I'm not positive).

You might try looking for an iPod Mini (they were available in 4 GB and
6 GB), or a 20 GB or 30 GB full-sized iPod made a year or two ago.

Your best bet is you buy the NEWEST Ipod. Do not get a nano.
A 30G video Ipod is $299. It's better to buy it than spend $199 on a
Nano that only has 2G. Or spend $250 for a Nano that has only 4G.
Because if you buy a Nano you will get addicted to it. And with that
you'll want a 30G video or higher.

It's better to spend the $299 right off the bat. If you don't have that
kind of money then get it some how, because it will be cheaper in the
long run.
