I found a guy named Peter Rice this evening that was personal friend of Nicky's
he sent me this e mail.

Hi Stephane.....no I have been unsuccessful in trying to trace Nicky. I was
involved with Nicky's publishing 1968 to 1975 in London and was a personal
friend. Nicky James (Michael Clifford Nicholls) got married to a French lady
Martyne approx 1975 and the last time I saw him he was living just outside
London (West).
Nicky James for me was one of the best song writers in London 1960-70's - he
also sold songs he was never credited for that were major hits when he was
hustling when he first arrived in London from Birmingham. He used to hang
out with Long John Baldry and Reg Dwight (Elton John) in the early
days.....he was also close to the Moody Blues, Hollies, Walker Bros and many
of the top session muso's of the time. He used to flat in Shepherds Bush
with a chap called Mike Taylor (agent), Noel Murphy (Irish folk singer) and
Shaggis (Davey Johnstone) of Murphy & Shaggis, then with Magna Carta and
since with Elton John.
If you do happen to find out anything about Nicky please let me know. I
still have many of his unpublished song demos and he is just such a special
person.

Thanks for your contact

Peter

PS I was in the music agency, management, publishing and production industry
in London 1968-75.

Excellent! I wondered if Nicky James was a stage name. Oh, what a mystery! Wonder
which songs he deserves credits for.
I'll see if I can't make contact with Long John Baldry at the end of a kite in
Dundas on Father's Day. He'll be easy to spot...
Do you know the song "A Thrills A Thrill" or "Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie on
the King of Rock and Roll"? Those are his.

That is very cool Esther.
I didn't know that Nicky toured with the MBs. That is probably one of
the with Pinder MBs last tour photos and programs.
I think that Nicky is the only solo artist signed to Threshold that
toured with the band except for some of the Providence crew who toured
with "Blue Jays".
Wouldn't this have been right before the "Octave" tour. Does anyone
know?

Stephane,
That is a really great and informative email about Nicky.
How did you come across this guy? Through this NG?
You should email him and tell him that those unpublished
demos could sell at least 10,000 to 20,000 copies total to diehard MB
fans. I would love to hear them.

I searched Deja for Nicky and found a post Peter made in 1999 looking for
him. I wrote just on the off chance that the addy still worked and he
replied right back. In the initial post he mentioned seeing Nicky right
after he'd written the songs for Ray's albums. I only know of one song by
him after that.

I also found a man by the name Michael Nicholls on deja and wrote to him.
He posts from the UK but got no reply....must not have been him. I thought
maybe it was his son.

I have wondered if Nicky is the reason Ray's not re-releasing FMO or HWD.
I'm so ignorant of the music business. I really don't know how it all
works. Maybe Ray has total control of his Solo albums. I don't know.

I too would love to hear the demo's and I'd also like to know if Nick left
any lyrics with Peter.

Back to the business end of things. I have no idea what obligations Peter
has to Nicky. Maybe he needs Nicky's ok to release them......I don't know.
I just know he's been looking for him.

10 to 20 thousand copies....you mean two :)

In the right hands maybe. Then again maybe that era is gone.

It was a Nicky/Ray song that got me here. The last song I heard that
reminded me of Nicky/Ray work is the last cut on Absolute O'Brien.

I've considered doing a vital statistics search to try to find out if he's
even with us anymore. Not sure how to go about that. Maybe a job for
another long night.

A Nicky James demo....straight out of the past....whew.

Wow.....might take some lyrics. I'd still like the lyrics for the song
called "She Came To Me".

I think Nicky was a great song writer. I agree with Peter there. I also
think Ray did a beautiful job singing his songs. I think they were good
together.

10 to 20 thousand ...do you really think there's that many of us?

Thank you,

some nice links in there....might have to bookmark this one.

The tour progarm covers are neat. I think I only own one. Getting to a
show is usually about all I can afford...so I'm left to buy goodies after
the fact. I like the music though... It's meant a lot.

Some of the Justin lyrics bring back memories.

Interesting note about FTBA.... Hey Mr Bootlegger...

I'm also really curious what the new material is that Justin will be
releasing with Songwriter and Nightflight. I hope we get a note when it
comes available.

Guess I better Go Now....

Thanks again, Esther.

I see very obscure stuff that is MB related
sell on Ebay all the time for big bucks.
There is a huge amount of people "out there" that want and seek for MB
related items.
In fact, the more obscure the higher the price is.
I really do think that the Nicky James demos could sell 10,000 to 20,000
which if it sold for $15.00 would translate into $150,000 to $200,000
dollars gross.
The Moodies have always done a terrible marketing job. I don't know why.
The re-release of Rays and Graemes CDs
would sell at least 100.000 copies which would translate into $1,500.000
dollars gross.
A CD of obscure MB material could sell 100,000 to 200,00 copies which
would be another $1.5 to $2 million dollars.
I wished I could get a paycheck from Threshold and just market MB music
that many of us want and are looking for. Wouldn't it be cool to get a
white background check with the purple Threshold logo on it? That would
be a great job to have.
The demand for this stuff is definitely out there but no one in the MBs
hierarchy is responding to it. I see this demand on Ebay everyday.
I could sell a Nicky LP for $40.00. I could sell "Hopes" and "Paradise"
CDs for $300.00 to $400.00.
There are many "out there" who want this obscure stuff and cant afford
it or don't know how to find it.
The MBs are missing the boat on making more money as they have a
plethora of material that is just sitting there collecting dust. Soon we
will all be too old to care or remember.
What would you in this newsgroup like to see released on CD or DVD by
the Moodies? What would you buy if it was available?

Sorry Brice, you overestimate the sales by a factor of 10.

They may have been able to sell these numbers in the 70s, but those days are

long gone.

Fact is, justifiably or no, not that many people care about any current MB
releases anymore. Tis sad, but true.

If these recordings were ever to be released, the rights would have to be
sold to
an independent label which could make a profit off small sales volumes. The
majors
won't touch this stuff.

I gather it was the Jays who sang Across The Universe at the Live Tribute to
John Lennon, May 5, 1990. Missed it so would be nice to catch that someday.
Also any footage of performances I see in JL's 'resume' at this link.

Wouldn't mind seeing a printed history of all their tours and who they had

That is true. No one can dispute that fact.  The chart positions of their post-Moraz recordings indicate that they have become "The Moody Who's?" to most of the music buying public.  The band has done everything they can to insure that they are no longer a vital product.

It is sad at times to realize that a band that has featured talents like Pinder and Moraz has been reduced to having a cheerleader on stage.  The current band just does not have the talent to give us a wonderous album.  Compare ST to MAGNIFICATION by Yes.  The difference is extraordinary.

Maybe the Moodies should decide to try another studio album and hire a real production talent like Jeff Lynne or Alan Parsons to add a spark of creativity to the sessions.  It certainly would not hurt if either of those gentlemen decided to contribute instrumentally either.

I got very lucky today. I searched the UK...cemeteries and obituaries and
on and on....and found Nick....very much ALIVE ! :)

Wow! It made my day...I think the song that best describes what it felt
like is "Floating"

I'm going to post a few links.....just in case a few others might be curious
about the things I found.

I still have some questions....I actually found a Maggie Nicholls in the UK
that was in 1971 a vocalist for the group called Centipede. I still see
mention of her still in the music world. Is she the Maggie, that Maggie was
written for???

I found mention of a man named James Nicholls....was he Nicky's father??? Is
that where he got his name?

And I found a few mentions of a Nicky James in country music in the
UK....same man???

When I searched his music the other day I found an album I knew nothing of
it's titled "Nicky James" it was released in 71 on the Phillips label. An
interesting tidbit about this one is that there are a couple songs on it
Co-written with Graham Nash. "Coming Up From the Ground "and "Good Day"

and about Reg Dwight...aka...Elton John. There are lyrics to a co-write
Nicky did with Elton on the net. The song is still unreleased...titled
"Where It's At" for the lyric minded curious....you can find them here...

http://www.eltonography.com/songs/where_its_at.html

about the Elton connection...seems Kirk Duncan and Elton did a Co-write.
Check covers.... Kirk is the piano player on some of our Moody fav's

I couldn't find his song...but it's also as yet unreleased. I'd like to lay
eyes on that one too... :)

I also in my song search found reference to a Nicky song called "Silver
Butterfly"....sounds interesting enough...well it seems several artists got
together and did a label experiment of their own....

http://www.voiceprint.co.uk/bamcaruso/bamvp1009.htm

looks progressive to me....and maybe of interest to a few who are looking
for something very different to listen to. I can't say I've heard any of
these people.

Another mention of Nicky is on this album.....it has familiar
Names....Looks like it might be very interesting...

Midge Ure, Howard Jones, The Water Boys...just to mention a few.....

http://www.kevinwilkinson.com/Text/album.html

My last link is the coolest... read 7 paragraphs down from the top....

http://www.ftproductions.freeserve.co.uk/archivenews.htm

Tantalus is covering Nicky's "Black Dream". BD is from Every Home Should
Have One. I've never heard Tantalus but Black Dream....well YES Nice
choice!

I have e mailed Peter...maybe now he can get in touch with Nicky. If he
does maybe someday we'll get to hear those demos or see those lyrics. But
for now...It's really nice to know that Nicky is still out there making
music.

Take Care Nicky and Good Luck Peter....

Oooh...that WOULD be interesting. Of course, if you want interesting

Wow, Steph!!

Aren't you the super sleuth!!?? If anyone is going to find this information...it will be you!

Last night, I fell asleep with the TV on. I woke up...temporarily and it took me a minute to figure out if I was dreaming or not.
There was some video on and I focused on a somewhat young(er) looking Justin. Then, Patrick was in it. I can't remember ever
seeing/hearing this before...and I CAN"T remember which song it was!! Does anyone have any ideas of any that might fit my really
vague description?

Well, I was just thinking about what possesses people to do things. I haven't made sense of it yet...or else I might open an office
as an analyst! One of the "kookiest" behaviors I have heard of...and seen exhibited...is that a person...of their own free
will.....would take time to involve themselves with something that is unpleasing to them. Is this a form of masochism, I
wonder......oh yes, I wonder!

This is outstanding! Oh that Steph...she's a woman who knows exactly where it's
at...she wears a portobello 'blue' bill-bob hat...
Can you remember where you found the "Nicky James" released in 71 on the
Phillips label?
Which Moody fav's is Kirk the piano player on?
Did you notice "The Rubble" cd (series 3) has We Can Fly by Portobello
Explosion...(not to be confused with The Amazing Caves ;-). Doesn't really fit
the 'scarce and undiscovered gems ranging from UK Psychotic Freakbeat, Pop-Sike
to full blown Psychedelia from the sixties'.
Silver Butterfly by Nicky James....hmm! Bet it's awesome! Unfathomable really
how much great UK music we have never heard!!!
Green Indians...when I clicked CD 1, it did not list what song Nicky is involved
in (along with Midge Ure and others). CD 2 came up blank. It's a 2000 release.
The cost of the CD is £16.00 for the UK and £20.00 for the rest of the world.
All proceeds will go to the Green Indians Trust. (What dat?)
You can order it here and no doubt, make Nicky inquires or contact.
Revolver Records

(Swindon, Wiltshire, eh? JH's roots!)
Now to the Tantalus...the 'symphonic and creative rock band'! :-) One reviewer
referred to their music as British finesse in pure form...Classic (Symphonic)
Art Rock genre in the true meaning of the word "art", which Western reviewers
use in regard to pomp-bands for some reason. (Gee, don't think I've ever heard
of any band we know of called that ;-) in these parts?)
I read that "At times one feels as if he is hearing a seventies styled rock with
hints of Genesis and Yes whilst at others there are
traces of the eighties with hints of Asia and Marillion, just to mention a few".
Seems they have a song called Night Flight! Hmm! What on earth kind of lyrics
are these!!?? (LOL!)
NIGHT FLIGHT
Come with me as in a dream
I’ll take you through the cloud,
Show you things you’ve never seen.

Just take my hand and let your spirit fly
Through the fire that is the dawn into the darkness of the night
This is a dream among the stars

We fly, just you and I and sense the cosmos racing by
The earth below blackest night
We fly just you and I and watch the planets flying by
Just take my hand and let your spirit fly
We can dance among the stars and touch the light that comes so far

We will take the night together flying through the night together
Distant stars we’ll see together, hand in hand we’ll be together
Come with me as in a dream
I’ll take you through the cloud,
Show you things you’ve never seen.

The earth below blackest night
We fly just you and I and watch the planets flying by
Just take my hand and let your spirit fly
We can dance among the stars and touch the light that comes so far

We will take the night together flying through the night together
Distant stars we’ll see together, hand in hand we’ll be together
© 1998 D. Daley

There are oodles of Tantalus audios available here and so far most of it's very
interesting! I don't think a MB's fan would be disappointed to own Tantalus
music!
http://www.ftproductions.freeserve.co.uk/sounds.htm
So borrowing from your link..."Tantalus are also covering the song 'Black
Dream', written and previously recorded by singer songwriter Nick James in 1972.
Nick was instrumental in the discovery of Elton John in 1968 as described in the
official Elton John biography. Nick released four albums in his own right, with
John Bonham being his drummer prior to joining Led Zeppelin. Nick also worked
together with many other artists including making two albums with Ray Thomas of
the Moody Blues entitled 'Hopes Wishes and Dreams' and 'Mighty Oaks', both of
which got into the top 20 album charts in the USA, UK and Europe. As well as
Tantalus performing Black Dream, Max Hunt has collaborated with Nick on a song
entitled 'Don't Cry', which will also be recorded for 'LUMEN ET CALIGO'
featuring Nick James, guesting on lead vocals.
Production work on this project is being done at Stable Studios in Wiltshire and
will commence from next week onwards. Work is scheduled to finish by the end of
February 2002 with the intended release of the first CD, 'LUMEN ET CALIGO I' in
March 2002 and the second CD 'LUMEN ET CALIGO II' in August 2002." and there's
so much more to read...I like the part about
Well Steph, what can I say but BONUS!!! You did see the part where it said Nicky
James has a studio in Wiltshire. Might that be the Stable Studio? In one place I
read that Max (of Tantalus) 11/10/99 was doing his first gig with Nicki James at
the Waterwitch, Didcot on Saturday 6th November. The set will include some of
Nicki's older original material alongside newer compositions written by Nicki
and Max over the past few years. they will also perform a healthy mix of well
known classic rock, pop and soul covers. Nicki James has been writing and
performing songs for the past 30 plus years and has worked alongside Elton John,
John Bonham, Graham Nash, John Lodge and many more. Nicki has many anecdotal
stories about his association with these artists in the 60's and 70's.
Bring 'em on Nicky!!!
(Worked alongside John Lodge?!!! What might that have been?!) Nice concert above
to have been able to attend! :-)
Well, hope all this info copied legibly. Finally got to see most of the MB's
Viva Las Vegas Simpson's episode yesterday and now Nicky surfaces. It's sure a
Happy Victoria Day weekend in Canada!!! Think a few fireworks are in order to
complete this celebration!!!
Thank you so much Steph! Hope springs eternal and didn't we get what we hoped

Argh!! I didn't realize the Jays had any involvement with that song! I've had
a very rough sounding copy of it off the radio for many years, then managed to
get download a good copy of an extended version of the song a year or two ago.
I'll have to listen to it with the Jays in mind and see if I can't pick them
out. It's one of those songs that a bunch of artists sing solo just a line or
two of the song, but everyone sings the chorus. (it was a song in protest of
the BBC putting Dr. Who on hiatus) I don't know if everyone in the chorus
actually had their own solo lines.

ahhhh yes I remember well....I only found two copies...guess that's enough
for this group though... If I told we might have to wait nigh on till
forever to hear them. I wonder what the cover art's like...no idea yet. :)

Did you find them Brice? Have you been out shoppin' again :)

I have a great picture of Kirk in the insert of my Blue Jay's album. Did
you get get pic's of the band with you Jay's CD? Nice ones of the Tompkin's
brothers , Jim Cockey and Graham Deacon.

Graham and Kirk are also players on the 71 release along with a guy named
Ray Lynn. First time I've seen mention of Ray Lynn.

Kirk also plays on Thunderthroat.

No I didn't...it's also the one with Silver Butterfly.

I'd thought that the last Nicky song was "Who Cares" Did you catch the
title of the album that song is on? With a title like that I was afraid
that was the last of Nicky. I'm glad there was a Silver Butterfly.

I'm not sure the only thing I saw was that it was done in the memory of a
drummer that didn't make it.

Oh My...is that their Nightflight...whew !!!

Well hope to find that out someday.......

I wonder what his present day songs are like. How much they've changed.....

I've heard Nicky connection's in Justin's music...some in Moving
Mountain's....might be all in my head but I hear them. My favorite cover
art connection is the inside gatefold of Every Home...with John and Justin's
..."We Can Fly" Maybe I'm silly.

Oh My...I'm still smiling when I think about it.

From Mighty Oaks has been such a special part of my life that finding
Nicky and having Ray and the rest of the band members to thank for their
music has been a wonderful experience.

So much to look forward to hearing.

I'm so blessed.

How about Steve Lillywhite (sp?)?

Hmm, Steve might be an interesting fit for The Moody Blues.  He certainly has some nice albums to his credit as a producer.

Daniel Lanois is another who I think would work wonders for the Moodies. He perhaps is best suited for capturing the atmosphere of the Clarke/Pinder arrangements.

How about Karl Wallinger?!  He is creative and talented.  He excels at recapturing period sounds.  Heck, he could even play all the instruments for the band in addition to producing.

I was thinking of Lanois as well! As was suggested earlier, Alan
Parsons might prove to be interesting though.

Who is he? I don't remember seeing his name anywhere.

I consided Hackett today...I bet he's really busy right now though...touring and
everything else he has going. I don't know. I don't have a lot of his work to
offer a very good opinion. The few thing I do have are good.

I litened to some of my Lanios last night. I found an album called The Pearl.
Harold Bud, Brian Eno and Daniel. It surprised me that there was an album out
there by that name...especially after that 3 day pearl thing. It's got a spacey
sound to it. I didn't make it all the way thru last night. Isn't Lanios pretty
busy. I though he did some producing for U2...or maybe that's just Eno.

It What about the guys that did Amazing Caves. Ty liked what they did with the
Moodies music and he's a pretty critaical guy. They are fairly familiar with
what the guys have done. It might make for interesting if this time they got a
chance to do something to please the Moodies rather than the Moodies doing
something to please them. Guess they could always scrap it if they didn't like
it.

Then again...maybe they like producing themselves. Don't ya think there's
probably bands out there startin' out that would be honored to have the Moodies
produce for them. Or you guys think they're so bad that that would never
happen?

He did work with early U2 and the 3rd Peter Gabriel album.

Didn't Lillywhite produce U2's Unforgettable Fire album? Hmmm...

Early U2......

you know JR....I really don't have all they ever did...the earliest I have
is Joshua Tree....I do see Steve's name there as the guy that mixed for
them....Brian and Daniel did the producing.

I'd have to say my favorite U2 is Rattle and Hum. That's a tape so I'm not
ever sure if that came before or after. Besides that I like the rare U2
finds. Some U2 I didn't like at all.

But

I don't think I'd really want the Moodies to sound like U2. A guitar driven
Moody Blues???

Nah.....they wouldn't do that to us would they???
