Hi Folks,

In the LP version of Daydream Believer A voice says "7A". Davy asks
innocently " What number is this Jim?" Is Jim the engineer or producer?
According the Personal Listing under The Birds The Bees & The Monkees CD at
http://www.allmusic.com the various producers are the Monkees and Chip
Douglas. Shorty Rogers was the arranger and the engineer duties are listed
as Peter Abbott and Hank Cicalo. The only people who qualify as "Jim" are
James Burton (legendary guitarist for Elvis), Jim Horn; sax. The info
from the sessionography Written by Kenneth Wang kkw...@geocities.com
indicates that:

...."Daydream Believer" was recorded on this day (June 14, 1967) and became
the fifth single A-side as well as being released on the fifth album.
Overdubs would be placed on "Daydream Believer" at a later session in
August. In 1997,(August 9, 1967) the group would remake this song as a part
of their medley for a TV special. An instrumental version would also be
included in the TV special. "

Anyone know if the "Jim" part was really an overdub or the actual Take
identification marker?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Please post or I can be emailed
at: cjma...@frontiernet.net

Thanks in advance,
John

Actually, Davy said, "what number is this CHIP", not "Jim". Chip,
meaning
Chip Douglas, the producer of the Headquarters album.

It was the actual identification marker.

I thought that Davy said "Jim" too, but I was told that he's actually saying
"Chip"
I could be mistaken though.

The person Davy refers to is Chip Douglas, the Monkees' producer--I don't
remember anyone named "Jim" associated with the Monkees, and it sounds like
"Chip" anyway, so I think I'm right.

David is saying what Number is the Chip?
Chip is Chip Douglas the producer.

It's "Chip." They've both been questioned about it at conventions.

Okay, I'm not the only one who also thought he said Jim! But I've
misunderstood lots of lyrics in my lifetime...

The person was not Jim, it was Chip Hatfield, a recording engineer on
the Monkees albums.

Can anyone confirm this? Do we really have TWO guys named Chip associated
with the Monkees from the recording standpoint?

No, no... there's only *one* Chip, but he uses a couple of different
surnames. Chip Douglas, Chip Hatleid (I know I'm not spelling that
right... corrections, anyone?), all the same person. The latter was
his birth name, I think.

Shameless plug:
Don't miss The Lovebugs upcoming CD of Monkee covers! Produced by Chip
Douglas. The Lovebugs are Chip Douglas, Danny Solazzi, Tyler Douglas
(Chip's son), and Justin McDonald. Track listing on The Lovebugs page,
listed below.

Okay...Chip Douglas' real name is Douglas Farthing Hatlelid. So Chip Hatlelid
and Chip Douglas whould be the same person. I can only assume the previous
person mistook the spelling "Hatlelid" for Hatfield.

On Headquarters he is billed as Douglas Farthing Hatlelid, on Pisces, Aquarius,
Capricorn and Jones LTD he is listed as Chip Douglas. On The Birds, The Bees
and the Monkees, which Daydream Believer is on, it is listed as produced by the
Monkees, with a footnote that DB was produced by Chip Douglas
