I always wondered where exactly did the name COLGEMS came from and I
figured out just now that it is a combination of Columbia and Screen Gems.
Does anybody know anymore on the Colgems Records history and how long it
lasted? Were The Monkees their only artists or were there others?

The Columbia Pictures-associated record label was originally entitled
Colpix Records, on which, if I'm not mistaken, both Davy and Mike recorded
before their stints in the Monkees.

I think the name was changed shortly before the series began filming, and
off the top of my head, the only other group that appeared on the Colgems
label that I can recall was the Lewis and Clarke Expedition, a group that
included "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" composer (with Owen Castleman)
Michael Martin Murphey. I'm sure there were other acts on the label, but
those are the only ones I can remember.

I have 45's on Colgems by country singer Hoyt Axton (wrote "Joy To the
World") and Sally Field (as the Flying Nun), as well as 2 by Lewis &
Clarke Expedition.
