PS - I'm a casual fan at best of some of the things listed, but they
served as the bridge from "then" to "now."

Anyone else want to play?

Sorry, I should have explained it better. It's a mapping of personal
tastes and influences, like "this" led to liking "this," which in turn
led to liking "this." With The Monkees at the trunk of so many
personal influence trees here, I thought it might be interesting.

Here's how one of my lines works:

Patsy Kline -> KD Lang -> nez -> Hellecasters -> guitar music ->
symphonic music -> ballet -> painting ballet dancers

I started thinking about this in the past year, when, thanks to my SO
(who does effects for a ballet company), I realized I like ballet, a
LOT. Entertainment-wise, it's the only thing that excites me right
now. Yet 20 years ago, when a friend of mine (who was in some *very*
notable dance companies) was dancing, I was bored to death at her
performances, because I just didn't *get* it. Now I do.

What happened? Well, in the intervening years, I stopped relying on
lyrics, and learned an appreciation for instrumental music, partly due
to my exposure to the Hellecasters. Through them, I learned that an
instrument can have a *voice* which speaks more eloquently than words
sometimes. (This was a big breakthrough for me, because I'm very
visual, not someone who understands music well.) This led to me being
able to appreciate other guitarists, which led to me understanding
other purely instrumental music - like classical - better, which was
necessary for me to like ballet. So, now I'm starting to paint ballet
dances, because a long time ago, I liked the music of Patsy Kline.

or

Monkees -> Ramones -> Blink 182

Peter Tork -> Elton John -> Jackson Browne -> Ani Difranco

Guess my musical tastes haven't so much "matured" as changed with the
times...

Okay, here's mine, taking it in a slightly different direction . . .

The Monkees > The Beatles > The Marx Brothers > Charlie Chaplin > Buster Keaton
> Joe E. Brown > Wheeler and Woolsey > 30's movies > Dead End Kids > Bowery
Boys

Not to mention countless other classic comedians. It's amazing after going
backwards in time how much the shows tipped their hats to those classic comedy
geniuses (not to mention early Hollywood in general). Funny how my
evolutionary tastes went backwards (then forward again, slightly), but I think
that works best, because a lot of fans of the old stuff don't care for the
newer stuff, stating "It's just a rip off of the old stuff!" By going
backwards, one can discover the genesis of what came later.

And before any of the Stooges fans ask why they're not on the list, let me
assure you I'm a fan of them, too! : )

late seventies AOR (in the late 70's of course)-> new wave -> Duran
Duran

Monkees -> meeting a bunch of really cool people who became very good
friends in other areas of my life.

Peter Tork -> James Lee Stanley -> see above about really cool people.

Overall, it's kind of hard for me to draw direct lines from The Monkees
to other things, although they have undeniably had an incredible
influence on my life and my tastes. For example, although
I "discovered" Frank Zappa through other avenues (most notably Dr.
Demento in the late seventies), I was more open to listening to him
because of his connections to The Monkees.

The best thing that The Monkees have "given" me is the people in my
life whom I otherwise would probably have never met. I met two of my
very best friends at a Nez video signing nearly 14 years ago....I'd
hate to think of what my life would be like now without them.

And I'd be a much less Internet-savvy person if it weren't for the
thriving Monkees online community in the early 90s. It was a safe
haven where I could learn from people who didn't frighten me with
age/sex/location checks. :) So, I guess The Monkees may be
responsible for the fact that I now work for an Internet startup!

Not that The Moody Blues is my favorite band, but my appreciation of pop,

I've heard other people say this, too (so I'm not *totally* nuts):
The theatricality of KISS felt comfortable to me, after being a Monkee
fan a few years earlier. Both groups - who both happened to be hugely
successful when I was the "right" age for them - were made up of four
guys playing characters, instead of four guys being themselves. The
fictional aspect was what made it fun - we knew that The Monkees
didn't really live together in a rundown beach house, just as we knew
that Gene Simmons didn't spit *real* blood, but surrendering to the
fantasy added another dimension, that went beyond mere music.

Also, KISS is sort of semi-manufactured, so there's that in common,
too.

>> Davy Jones -> Pete Duel ||
>how very sad -- i loved alias smith and jones -- didn't duel commit suicide?

Yeah, he did, when the show was at the height of its success, around
the holidays. That was the second TV show I ever really loved, and
Duel was my second "TV crush." After he died, I realized that I knew
*nothing* about the real people behind the faces on TV, and never had
another celebrity crush again.

>monkees-nez-hank williams ||
That's a logical progression. I've always liked him, although I was
reluctant to admit it until The Last Picture Show came out. Now that I
think about it, liking HW helped me to like nez's music.

OK, The Beatles are my number one band...The Monkees came next and were
the biggest influence on my personal interest in playing the banjo(Pete)
and guitar(Mike).

Other bands that have kept my musical interest going are The Who(Live at
Leeds-best Album),Led Zepplin(they were playing THAT in the
60's????),Doors,Loving Spoonful,CSN&Y,Animals,Deep Purple(Ritchie
Blackmore-just awesome)Stevie Ray Vaughn,Robin Trower,Queen(best concert
I ever went to)Montrose,Areosmith(still),Billy SHeehan(best bassist in
the world)Journey,Foreigner,Jethro Tull,Genesis,Pink Floyd... I passed
over disco and a lot of the 80's (The Ramones -gag)

Now I do like some songs today but I don't know the names of the groups
or singers.
