I have mixed feelings about this...
On one hand, I think it's so cool that he did the cover art himself.
OTOH, I really liked the old cover, and it influences the way I listen
to the songs. It's more... serious. Maybe it's just because I'm used
to it, but I'm having a hard time accepting a new cover at this point.

Any opinions?

The graphic itself can be reached directly at:

I think it's also on the "...t.c's..." sales page.

I just now noticed the 1-866-PAPANEZ phone number... cute.

thanks for the link.
I prefer the old cover. This new one's a bit too "cartoony" when you
consider the tone of the album.
It made me giggle though. Esp. knowing he had done that himself.

Well, in all honesty, what you're looking at there doesn't look like
cover art for an album, it looks more like a cheap clip art with the
new customer service number attached. This particular ad is on the
other the pages for the other albums. I scrolled down past the track
listing (where the cover art is also for the other albums) and saw the
familiar cover art. I would think that somebody down there simply
didn't change the .jpgs. :)

i find it hard to believe that he actually replaced the wonderfully
enigmatic cover art with a cartoon. are you sure it's on the cd?

Wait a second; I don't believe that is the new cover. I believe the
change is much more subtle:

That has been on his web page for years. That can not be the artwork! Nez would
never put that there. That's Bubba Crutch and the cosmic cowboy. COS

If that really is the new cover, I much prefer the old one. In my mind the
old cover certainly fits in with the flow of the album better, or maybe
it's because I'm used to seeing the old cover. Susan

Ah, thanks! I'm glad to see the old cover hasn't been replaced by that
awful cowboy cartoon. Sorry for posting the wrong URL, but I just went
to the page that Videoranch posted in their email.

So now I'm wondering, are there any changes in the cover art, besides
different cropping?

Hey, that was a fair analysis. :) It does look cartoony for a cover
art for the album; that look on the face of the caricature that looks
like Nez(?) would make me queston the seriousness of "...tropical
campfires..."

I think the newer one is prettier. JMO.

comin/standard ranch stash". I hope to have this one by Christmas!

I'll be slowly getting the whole collection ... yet again (I have all
the vinyls. Just recieved the new "Tropical Campfires" and the cover is
only slighly different than the old one. the image isn't wrapped around
the back of the cd, and there is a close up of the palms on tha back.
It's brighter. I really like it. I'm not sure it was worth buying a
second copy of the cd for that. but hea, I support Michael's work so
yeah, it's worth it. Besides, it is a collector's item.

I have the new tropical campfires CD. The cover art is still the same
painting but Nez worked for quite some time on it using a computer to
change some of the colors and lighten things up and make it prettier.
The new cover is not as dark as the original. The sky and the land are
a very pretty pink and purple. Reminds me of the words to Moon Over the
Rio Grande. The animals are also prettier. The appearance of the moon
is completely different as well. I like the new artwork, I can see the
detail of the painting much clearer. Nez had an artist paint the cover
for TC and now Nez has changed it to be more of what he had in mind.

On the inside cover is a picture of Nez that was not in the first CD
and there is also a new picture of John Hobbs, Joe Chemay and Luis
Conte. The back cover has a closeup of the flamingos.

The cartoon campfire scene you all have been talking about is not the
new cover but something that has been up on the Videoranch site for
years.

Dear Donna,

Doesn't Mike do his own art work?

It seems odd that he would hire an artist to do the first cover, then
redo it himself the way he really wanted it to look like.

I just feel(this is my opinion) that this would be an insult to the
artist.

Art is a way of expression and the only way you can express yourself is
if you do it yourself.

Just curious but no need to reply if you don't want to. J

This kind of work isn't in the realm of "art. " It's graphic design.
Whether done by a team or an individual, a graphic designer's job is
not to express himself, but carry out the client's wishes and make
his vision come to life. It's work for pay, like restoring a boat or
wallpapering a room. I'd imagine that nez was well within his rights,
both contractually, and ethically.

Does anyone know for sure that the original was in the form of a
painting, or could it have been computer art? Just from the "look" of
it (odd choices of light and shadowing, the repeat of elements like
the mesa, the "cartoonish" look of the island in contrast to the
background), I've always thought it was done on a computer.

Looking at the old CD cover now, it does seem muddy, and in need of
some brightening.
Are the "hidden" images any clearer now?
