It may be known to some as a Monkee song, and those oblivious to the Monkees may
think of it as a Neil Diamond tune, because, after all, he did record it and his
version has been played on the radio as well. Regardless, Neil wrote it and is the
one getting the royalities, not the Monkees, and he's smiling all the way to the
bank.

Wrong. It is best known as a Monkees song. Yes, they covered it from Neil,
but I'm sure the people around the Aiwa board room said, "Let's use that
Monkees song, I'M a Believer, in the commercial." The same way everyone thinks
of Thanks For The Memories, as a Bob Hope Song or Twist and Shout as a Beatles
song. Ooops, I mean an Isley Brothers song.
I've seen it also. They showed it a lot a couple months ago, then started
showing it again.

That's true though I cna honestly say I've NEVER heard the Neil Diamond version. I think this
is just a case of a song being identified with it's most famous recorded version rather than
with the composer. Sorta like Elvis and "Hound Dog"....

No, it's not a Neil Diamond cover. I don't recall Diamond releasing a version
of the song prior to the Monkees.
And yes, it's a Monkees song. It's (a) a song and (b) the Monkees are singing
it, and what's more, they are the artist most associated with the song. No
implications of authorship were being made by that statement.
If anything, it's a Monkees recording of a Neil Diamond composition.

I don't know if it was released before the Monkees, but I do know that
it's on a number of his albums. He's also done it in his concerts.

Ok, that's exactly what it is.

Certainly not one that was released. According to
http://www.neildiamondhomepage.com/ Neil's first issued recording of
"I'm A Believer" was an album track on his second solo album "Just For
You" which was issued in September 1967, almost a year after the
Monkees version hit the charts. So if you count the original
recording, Neil was the one who "covered" the Monkees version of his
own song!

Yes and when he does he actually credits it as, "Here's the one done by The
Monkees!"
Listen to his two cd greatest hits for the actual quote.
