Hi there.
When I bought the 1983 CD, I was disappointed that it in parts sounded not quite
like the original vinyl had--in fact it sometimes sounds *very* different, as if
the volumeter of some instruments had been lowered to zero.
So I went on trying to figure how many versions there were. The wikipedia
Tubular Bells page says nothing about the remastered versions (it seems it was
written mainly to advertise the coming 2009 many versions). Anyway, as far as I
have found, it seems nothing happened until 1998, when there was a remastered
version (must have had to do with the 25th anniversary), then there was the
2003, very different version.
I read somewhere that the remastered version was interesting and came with a
noteworthy leaflet. I am buying a copy of the 25th anniversary issue; I assume
this one is a remastered version by someone else than Mike Oldfield, but with
his okay I guess.
So can you think of a version I missed (I don't need the quadro version as I
can't use it), or do you think the 25th anniversary version is the next step
right after the 1983 one?
Thanks for any clue.
By the way I just ordered the deluxe from the official site; hope it's worth it.
Greetings from France.

I just found that there was a hdcd version in 2000, but I can't tell if it's
built after the 1998 remaster--has to, don't you think?

As far a I remember...

1973 - V 2001 - Original mix, original recording made at The Manor -
Autumn 1972/ Spring 1973
1973 - QV 2001 - Quadraphonic mix, with a plane flying around at the
end.
1976 - Quadraphonic mix featured on Boxed, without the aeroplane. May
be different from the 1973 quad mix.
1978 - VP 2001 - Picture Disc, features a stereo remix of the
quadrophonic mix.
1983 - CDV 2001 - First CD edition of TB. I don't know which mix is
used, may be either the original or the quad-to-stereo downmix used in
the picture disc version.
1998 - CDVX2001 - 25th Anniversary Edition, Remastered re-release by
Simon Heyworth at Chop 'Em Out Mastering London
2000 - CDVR 2001 - Remastered in HDCD format by Simon Heyworth at Chop
'em Out studios between March and April 2000. I don't really know if
its exactly the same mix of 1998.
2000 - SACDV 2001 - According to Wikipedia, "Hybrid SA-CD contains a
new remaster of the original LP in 2-channel CDDA and DSD, and a new
remaster of the 1975 quadraphonic mix."
2009 - Bahamas Mix, by Mike Oldfield himself

Corrections are welcome ;-)

And you do remember quite a bit. Matter of fact, I e-mailed
http://www.mikeoldfield.org/ but I have no idea if they answer such mails or
not.
Thanks a lot anyway, I know what I must be after now.

2007 - British newspaper 'The Mail on Sunday' included a free copy of
the "complete, original studio recording" in its April 22nd 2007 issue
in a cardboard sleeve with the "original artwork". However, the
small-print on the back of the sleeve states that it is the "2000
Digital Remaster".

But... that was the 2003 'remake' or the original TB?

Well, that may mean that there is indeed a 2000 Digital Remaster apart
from the 1998 one.

Thanks for the info and regards,

TB1 is always a "remake" of TB from the early 70`.
Sorry, but English is not my native tongue.
TB1 on the Audio DVD sounds "totaly" different to the first TB.
Not only by the 6 Channels but also the kind of playing the accords. The
speed of some parts seems faster to me.
The narrator, who intruduces the single instruments sounds different.

So I think, the AUDIO DVD is a new recording or new mix.

It would seem [*] it was the 2003 version.

True.

Same with us (well, *some* of us at least).

It is a "totally" new version-- as
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubular_Bells_2003 sure told you?

> The narrator, who intruduces the single instruments sounds different.

Of course, as it is John "Silly Monty Python Walker" Cleese this time around.

> So I think, the AUDIO DVD is a new recording or new mix.

A brand new recording.
Besides, it also features the 1971 demos, so if you listen to those they *sure*
don't sound like the '73 version [*].

[*] I am assuming from what I have read, as I may be getting my copy tomorrow.
