Thankyouverymuchgoodnight! The UNOFFICIAL Mike Keneally/Beer for
Dolphins Tribute! is now available at http://thankyouverymuchgoodnight.info.

The history: there was a time when accessing a Usenet newgroup like
alt.music.mike-keneally required you to be a fairly significant geek.
Beyond that, there was a time when Mike Keneally's ISP didn't even
carry the alt.music.mike-keneally newsgroup for him to access. During
that period I created a moderated mailing list using a now-defunct
service called Listbot. The mailing list, called Random Fandom,
became a place that Keneally and a couple of hundred fans
interacted.

In April of 1999 I moved across the country. I wasn't sure how many
days I'd be without internet access and decided that I would let the
forum be unmoderated while I was gone. I made the mistake of
announcing that fact, and people flooded the mailing list (and the
inboxes of subscribers) with the kind of wild-ass stream-of-
consciousness wacky stuff that you sometimes see here in the newsgroup
(on this particular occasion it was largely about goiter). When I got
back online a few days later, I found that a bunch of subscribers,
including Mike Keneally himself, had left the list due to tremendous
volume of unmoderated, off-topic messages. Even more subscribers
would have been quit but for Ron Moses née Spiegelhalter wisely
stepping in to help redirect the stream by creating a new listbot
mailing list called Random Fandom Off-Topic so that "RanFan" could get
back to normal while those who wished to discussed goiter and bathroom
issues could continue without disturbing anyone but themselves.

After restoring moderation/sanity to Random Fandom, the lists
continued in tandem. The small but active membership of Random Fandom
Off Topic were ideal recipients of Wade Buehler's suggestion that we
make MK a tribute CD for his birthday. RF2 (as it had come to be
called) was small and isolated enough that we were able to discuss the
project openly on the list while remaining under the radar of the rest
of the community and most importantly MK himself.

In December of 1999 we presented Mike with his birthday CD, which
consisted entirely of contributions from RF2 subscribers. The CD was
made available for free trading and download to anyone who wanted it,
and I made a website that represented the liner notes of the booklet.
As time passed, the links to download the tracks stopped working. More
recently, the couple of cheesy places I hosted the site closed up
shop. The project sort of disappeared.

The recent passing of our friend Doug Boucher reminded us that he had
contributed an absolutely beautiful bass solo to the
Thankyouverymuchgoodnight! CD. Now, roughly ten years after it's zany
conception, I'd like to direct everyone to http://thankyouverymuchgoodnight.info,
where you can download the tracks from our Keneally birthday tribute.
Right now it's just a utilitarian page with the cover and links to the
songs (both .flac and .mp3). Soon I'll get the full body of the liner
notes up, some of which I recovered from archive.org and some of which
I'm scanning and typing; I'll post a reply in this thread when that
stuff is up.

The booklet is a lot of fun, but don't wait to enjoy the songs,
especially Doug's track Requiem for a Head Lying in a Field in Butler,
titled after the head-ripping effect of the outdoor August 9 1998 -
Butler IN: Grass Roots Tea Party show (http://www.cidanka.nl/keneally/
98gigs.htm). In fact you don't even need to go to the site enjoy his
track: download it directly at http://bit.ly/4wJuPu for the flac or
http://bit.ly/59HfG1 for the mp3

Thank you, RF2 members past and present as well as the
Thankyouverymuchgoodnight! contributors and Mike Keneally himself. I
especially want to thank Han van de Graaf, Alan Tignanelli and Antal
Adriaanse who immediately worked to get these files available when it
was realized that they weren't online anymore and people wanted to
hear Doug's contribution.

Goodnight Doug,

Until Lerch gets everything in place, here's a copy of the CD liners.

I forgot one thing. I wasn't originally going to do it and didn't think it
was critical, but I think Doug would have appreciated this:

I'm an MK noob compared to most of you guys so I had no idea that this
even existed, but this material is freakin' great. It has that
innocent, exuberant, confident, late-90's, MP3.COM "how does this
Protools thing work" feel to it, except multiplied by Keneally. Good
job, everyone, and merry Christmas to all.

Most excellently done, Mike not K!

I'd not had these tracks until the recent developments, so I'm glad to see they're available again,
if only for selfish reasons.

Monk (The Old Tidyboat Guy) left last April; gone on up to the big sky
where he is now accompanied by none other than Frankie the Cherry
Headed Conure (just a baby when he walked on those bones) and Sluggo
The Ravishingly Beautiful and Somewhat Melodic Cockatiel (as seen atop
the Pignose behind the bones on The Old Tidyboat Guy page.) So this
thing by Mr. Lerch is very important. I can cry. I just had "Cold
Hands" playing on repeat for quite some time and now Carol and I sit
here on this Christmas Eve enjoying rum laden egg nog and listening to
Mr. Sting's "If On A Winter's Night..." , knowing all too well that
this is the best that things will ever be. Thank you Mike and Mike
(Lerch and Keneally) for being legends and making this a nicer planet.
We all pretty much rock and stuff, no?
