I got absolutely drenched walking over to my friend Rhyd's place, so
we could go up to Swindon for the gig with Mike and Dave. The journey
up was foul- poor weather in Wales and then we got lost searching for
the Riffs, which is not exactly in Swindon per se but out in a leafy
village setting. Arriving on the dot at gig start 8.30, we were pretty
happy for the gig to actually start at 9pm. All the instruments and
equipment were lent by Dave Gregory, so Mike's electric guitar was a
Gibson SG. Highlights (and the gig was a bit of blur) was the sheer
number of songs played by Mike and Dave together, including what I
think is a first, 2001 arranged for two guitars. Other songs featuring
Dave were SleepDirt, Inca Roads, a song by Allan Holdsworth (no title
given), um er my memory has gone... Pride is a Sin... Mike also played
Airport seguing into Hallmark, bits of Skies of LA, Paranoid Android
(an audience, request) Viking Song (a Dave Gregory request), Potato
(with audience singalong), Live in Japan (ditto), Cowlogy, Idiot
Bastard Son.... and more...
I do believe I met Laura- a female Todd fan- Andy Greenaway and
others. Mike's being enjoying his holiday and writing with Andy
Partridge.
Gig was throroughly documented, but there was an agreement to destroy
all documentation to protect Da9ve's health. Its for his own good...
And now I'm off to sleep.
night all!
Andrew
AAAAIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
> And now I'm off to sleep.
You wouldn't be so comfortable if there weren't an ocean between
us! ;-)

Thanks for the laugh, Andrew - I *really* wish I could have been
there, weather and all. As I commented on a particularly excellent
dinner last night, if it came with a kick in the nuts, it'd still be
worth it.

Dave played on Inca Roads!? Wow!
Oh, I can't wait for the documents!
J. D.
next time bring bryan!!!
Hey Hey
Yes, Laura right here - right next to you soaking up the sweaty
atmostphere!
I kept turning to Damo (to my left) and the guy behind me (from some
band or other with dark curly hair, who was singing Potato Potato in
my ear) and I just was gob-smacked at what I was seeing/hearing.
Piano AND guitar (all whilst balancing glasses and various other
wobbling objects on the keyboard). I'd never met Dave G before but
what a lovely man - he even high-fived me as I left the bar.
I asked for Pride is a Sin, but Mike said to wait for Dave to come
back on stage - so I think it was already on the set list. So good to
hear Ankle Bracelet, Joe and some of the Wooden Smoke toons and see
their complexity as well as hear it.
What was the XTC song that Mike played when Dave settled back and said
"I'll just watch"? It was so totally fantastic to see Dave clearly
enjoying it so much - made everyone smile I think.
Hope they guys now enjoy some Wiltshire sunshine and the wonderful
colour of Autumn - my drive home was beautiful.
See you at The Forum Andrew (and nice to meet the others there last
night) :)
Seconded!
I was in front of you in a Wooden Smoke t-shirt, wishing I'd arrived
early enough to get a space near the front (and resisting the urge to
request "Apple Pie"!)
Any idea when a decent recording might surface? Several truly
astounding moments that I would love to relive...
Also, I need to hang out here a bit more, so I might actually know
some folk at the next gig!
Cheers,
Andrew
Anyone care to try and get the set list down with me?
Out of order, but here are some of my recollections.

with a Xylophone and I love, but don't know the title (was it
clambake)?
To continue the setlist mind-dump...
Idiot Bastard Son (Zappa)
Potato
The whole Cow suite (complete with XTC reference!)
The one where Dave "just watched" was Inca Roads, although he did
contribute some "guitar percussion"
I don't remember him playing Choosing to Drown - did I zone out??
Anyone remember any others?
> I kept turning to Damo (to my left)
Damo? Kenji Suzuki formerly with Can?
Might have wrong title !?
AND YES - IT WAS CLAMBAKE - I have it on my video :)
Nah! Nice bloke who'd come in from London and walked the last six
miles in the dark with a torch to get to the gig. He seemed to enjoy
the hell out of it.
I was hoping, hoping, hoping that Sirs Partridge and Moulding would
join the Fab Two for an impromptu XTC re-onion, but some vegetables
are best left unpeeled, I guess.
Thanks, lads and lassies, for the firsthand reportage; what a setlist!
All this, and Dave Gregory to boot. Sounds like a fantastic evening in
a sweet little country pub watching two amazing musical minds having
fun exchanging sounds.
Damn, I wish I could've been there...
