MIDI input/output from Casio CTK-511 to/from PC Soundblaster-16 joystick port?

I just bought a Casio CTK-511 keyboard. Cheap enough for me to start
working on my music writing. I usually just do lyrics, but now that I use
NoteWorthy Composer to add lyrics to my co-writers music, I would like to
adjust, add to, create the music to my lyrics.

I am not having luck getting sound to or from the keyboard from my card.
I'm not sure the SB16 is capable, but I can play midi files through
multimedia software.

Anybody have any suggestions, or got this to work (I dual boot between NT
4.0 and Win95, so either will do)?

I don't have the full SB set of tools, since it came installed already in my
PC when bought. I'm not even sure if it is a clone. I have upgraded the
drivers from Creative Labs on Win95 side. Any special installation
instructions needed to define the port or keyboard?

I'm really a newbie at this, so if there is a FAQ that will help, then
please point me to it.

Also, I request to reply to both my e-mail and this newsgroup, since I might
miss it here.

I have a CTK-511 as well. It's better specified than my piano playing is.

I bought my 511 to replace a mini-key MK10. This came with a cable that
connected to the soundcard, however this did not work. When I sat down with
my tester I found that the keyboard and cable where not wired as a true MIDI
Cable.

I bought a proper SB/Joystick to MIDI box and some proper MIDI cables and it
works a treat with all the MIDI players I can lay my modem on.

Have you checked that you have the right cables. It's worth buying proper
cables just so that you've got someone to shout at when they don't work.

I hope this helps you.

....now, if I could only figure out what all the buttons in Cubasis lite do,
I'd be a happy man. 8^)

I too am trying to get my Casio 511 to work. I have a SB AWE 64 and am
using a midi cable I got with my old SB Pro. I am not having any luck, but
this is all new to me.

What is a SB/Joystick to MIDI box?

I am also attempting to use the software that came with my SB AWE 64, called
Vienna. I can click and play selected instruments with my mouse on the
screen but cannot do ANYTHING with my Casio 511.

Is there any MIDI shareware/demoware out there that may be better or not too
expensive?

Is there any "newbie" midi sites that might help explain channels and other
midi settings to me?

TIA

It is a box that connects to the soundcards 15-pin joystick/midi connector
at one end. The other end of teh 1-metre cable has a box with 2 joystick
ports on one side and 2 5-pin din MIDI sockets on the other side. These
midi sockets are marked midi-in and midi-out making the connection of the
keyboard a doddle.

The Casio 511 will only respond to midi messages sent on channels 1-4 and
10. The instrument is not General Midi (GM) compatible by default. GM
compatibility is available by selecting the G tone map (see the user guide,
which has a useful quick guide to MIDI.)

The lack of GM means that some midi files will not play correctly or be
missing some parts. Watch out.

My soundcard has two outputs, an FM sound-source and the MPU-401, this is
the MIDI port. You need to point the output from Vienna to the MPU-401 or
MIDI port for it to talk to the Casio.

Try the shareware music machine (Sorry don't know the URL)

For a general guide look for MIDI from your favourite search engine.

Good luck.
