Hi Kevin,
have you considered that it might be less of a problem to record your
backing from midi onto minidisc - I wouldn't fancy lugging any pc equipment
anywhere near alcohol.
This way you could also use backing tracks which you get on CDs with guitar
mags (though I'm not sure about copyright),
Where / when are you playing?

Hi,

Like Kevin, I'd like a cheap live MIDI setup. I have a good sound module, and
I've thought about putting all the backings on CDs or MP3s like so many do now,
but that defeats my other objective - to be able to selectively mute various
tracks for the evening, depending on what musicians are there - might be any
combination of guitar, bass, drums, percussion, trumpet, sax, keyboard, and
backing vocals.

Assuming I edit all my MIDI files so each track has the same instrument, does
anyone know a good MIDI player that would let me easily mute tracks for the
whole session, preferably needing only a slow (=cheap) notebook PC? I have a
good DOS MIDI player (MegaMIDI by FONG Chee Keat) that might get there if I run
it via a decent batch file under 4DOS.

You could try a multitrack minidisc system & fade out what you don't want on
the night?

ShowPlay does that, among lots of other things.
See details at www.pride-corp.com/specs-detailed.htm

As for cheap notebooks, it works nicely even on 486-25MHz laptops with 8M of
RAM.

Thanks for that link - it'll take me a while to digest it all, but it looks
great.

I could, but that would take a lot of mini-discs, a lot of money and a lot of
time to record. I think I'll stick with the MIDI direction.

A good freeware Windows MIDI /Karaoke player can be downloaded from

http://www.vanbasco.com

I will allow you to mute each channel individualy, and as you can open and
close any or all of the windows in the program you wish. I've had it
running on an VERY old IBM P/S2 with 8M of RAM!
