Michael Jackson claims to be the biggest selling solo artists to date.
Thriller alone has sold about 50 million. Because of this, is it true?
Garth Brooks seems to sell quite alot as well.....I would really like to
know where they all fit in the "biggest seller" catagory. If anyone has
any clue, please post a reply. Thanks!

Have you prayed today?

Worldwide it has to be Elvis, according to the RIAA it is Elvis in the
USA its just that they didnt start counting sales when Elvis was
popular, in recent times in the USA it has to be Garth Brooks, and
the biggest album ever has to be Thriller there can be no argument
about that.

I guess because its country music, his albums go gold and platinum
here in NewZealand and in Australia, and he does well in Ireland but
its country music so it doesnt have a big following in Europe.

2. Beatles
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Garth Brooks

Elvis and the Beatles are pretty much interchangable at number one with
each selling an estimated 1 billion world wide. On a worldwide basis,
Garth wouldn't be there. ABBA, with worldwide sales of over 350
million, would be somewhere.

While he is known here in Australia, he's nowhere near as big as he is in
the US. His last album 'Scarecrow' peaked at No.71 in the Australian charts
last year for example.
In a list I saw a few years ago he was well out of the top 10 highest
selling artists of all time, while Cliff Richard, who has sold well in
Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand over the past 44 years but
has only ever scored three US top ten hits back in the late seventies/early
eighties, was at No.10 with 280million sales.
I've actually managed to dig up the list (which is from 1998), but I'm not
entirely sure where it's from or how accurate it is. I know there is a
great deal of conjecture about how Beatles sales are calculated, so who
knows.

1. Beatles: 1,300million
2. Elvis: 980million
3. Elton John: 470million
4. Bing Crosby: 450million
5. Rolling Stones: 350million
6. Michael Jackson: 300million
7. Paul McCartney: 300million
8. Abba: 300million
9. Queen: 290million
10. Cliff Richard: 280million

WHERE did you make these numbers up from?

HIStory 25 million?!?!? LOLOLOL

HIStory has sold LESS than 3 MILLION copies here in America. & America's his
biggest market. So, without me going & getting my Billboards & Soundscans &
checking, say he sold DOUBLE that elsewhere, that would make it 6 million
worldwide.

WHERE do you get 25 million!!??!

Also, Dangerous has NOT sold 25 OR 30 million worldwide.

It is extremely hard. They all seem fairly reasonable to me, but I think
there's some disagreement on how Beatles sales are calculated. I think some
calculations make up for the fact that singles weren't individually
released from a lot of the albums with some formula that doesn't actually
count sales.

> Watch--we'll have that Madonna guy all over our a** for this one..
>

Heh, that's what I thought when I was posting it.
To be honest, I recently looked at a list of her worldwide sales divided up
by singles and albums and I'd always thought she sold more and was closer
to MJ in sales during the eighties. While she's certainly outsold
Invincible with her last two albums, neither of them were as big as HIStory
worldwide. When you look at a lot of the artists on the list like Elvis,
Beatles, Elton, Bing Crosby, Cliff Richard, etc, they've all been around
for such a long time and had so many hit albums, singles and then greatest
hits collections that it'd be hard to imagine they wouldn't be up there.

America hasn't been his biggest market for a long time, and around the
beginning of the HIStory world tour the official figure was 15million
individual copies sold worldwide. After the tour it went back into the top
ten and even topped the charts of a few countries (including here in
Australia where it was then certified 6x platinum) and Forbes recently put
the figure at 16million.
I remember a Time magazine article which stated it had sold more copies
than Thriller had outside of America, but I'm not sure if that's entirely
acurate.
I agree there's no way it sold 25million copies, but 16million sounds
reasonable.

This is probably doubtful too. I think the figure was something like 21 or
22million a few years back, and I doubt it's sold a few million since then.

I dont think MJ will ever reach the status of the Beatles, in terms of sales or

Hmm, well I'd read ROL's sales figures as 14.5million and Music as "10
million in January 2001 and shipped 4.1 million during 2001" which would be
14.1million copies shipped up to the end of 2001. Her album sales figure
was put as 153.5million worldwide, but not sure about singles.
HIStory's sales figure was officially quoted as 15million in 1996, and
Forbes recently quoted it as in excess of 16million which would make sense
given its rise in worldwide charts after the 1996/97 world tour.
There is no doubt Madonna has done extremely well, but maybe in total she
hasn't sold quite as much as a handful of other artists. Is that a major
problem?

> NOt 2 mention thats sad that an artists studio album has sold more than
> another artists greatest hits

Well, for a start, HIStory wasn't *just* a greatest hits album for what
that's worth. Secondly, GHV2 sold less than Invincible in the US didn't it?
It's really neither here nor there that a greatest hits album doesn't
outsell an all-new album from someone else. The world's highest selling
album wasn't a greatest hits album, for example.

Kyle,

HIStory has sold around 16 million double albums worldwide, which means
that sales are counted as 32 million. If we are going to count Tupac's
Double album sales,Garth's double album sales, and EVERY other artists'
double albums as counting as single sales, then we are going to count
HIStory as selling or certified as 7 million in US and 32 millio
worldwide. That's the way it has always been done, and that's the way it
will continue to be done.

I don't think anyone would argue that Madonna has been anything other than
successful. What's the point of posting all this?
I can't 100% verify the accuracy of the sales figures that I posted, and
suspect that The Beatles are a lot closer to Elvis in reality. The others,
however, largely make sense.
An example of the world outside America mattering would be someone like
Cliff Richard who you've likely never heard of. He's been singing for more
than 40 years now, and at his peak in the sixties had 19 consecutive
singles which sold more than 1million copies worldwide, and five other
million sellers on either side. In the seventies he came back with more hit
singles, one selling over 1million and two selling over 2million. In the
eighties again he had another 5 singles which sold over 1million, and his
last single to really register was The Millennium Prayer (whatever you make
of it) which sold about 1.5million copies around the world in 1999. Add to
that the fact he's released in total 132 singles which have generally sold
a few hundred thousand copies each and 124 of which have reached the UK top
40 earning him a place in The Guiness Book of Records, more than 60 albums
which sell from the hundred thousands to over 1million, and all the EPs and
other stuff they used to sell in the sixties and it all adds up. Sure
Madonna per album would sell a lot more than Cliff, but he's got time on
his side.
While I can't be bothered typing it all up, similar figures could be given
for artists like Elton, Elvis, Beatles, etc I'm sure.
As for MJ, he has generally been bigger outside the US than Madonna so US
statistics don't necessarily equal higher worldwide sales. For example,
here in Australia GHV2 was certified platinum while Invincible was
certified double platinum, Music and ROL were certified 3x platinum while
HIStory was certified 6x platinum, Dangerous was certified 8x platinum with
the only Madonna album beating that being The Immaculate Collection which
was certified 11x platinum. So, while Madonna is definately huge, Michael
Jackson has just been bigger and I think this has generally been the case
around the world. It doesn't take away from her success, so I don't see why
you get so up tight about it.

Very true.

ROL is VERY CLOSE 2 16 million! & Music is still selling.

Yes thatz about right. A bit higher. With singlez shez over 250 million.

I believe that the doubling of double albums in terms of sales is a US
thing only.

Also, if Madonna's world sales are about 154 million, then that puts her
behind Nana Mouskouri who has world sales of more than 200 million. So
I guess Madonna isn't the biggest selling female singer after all.

Madonna does seem to sell quite well over time, and I have noticed her
older albums do often seem to pick up new certifications every few years
out here.

Worldwide sales figures are not doubled for double albums. For some reason
the US counts double albums as 2 sales for certifications, but nowhere else
does to my knowledge. When HIStory was certified 6x platinum in Australia,
for example, it was for selling 420,000 copies (yes, we are a small
country!), not 210,000.
Once again, on a worldwide basis the difference between selling, say, 14 or
15million copies as opposed to 16million isn't amazingly significant.

Well, yeah, 16million double albums sold is 16million double albums sold.
It's not 32million by any stretch of the imagination which is what I find
odd about the US certification system

If Soundscan tracked world sales and not just the US and Canada, their
listing would carry a bit more weight. Not to mention that Soundscan
has only been in existence since 1991, so what about sales before that?
Instead of believing everything that Billboard and Soundscan says, maybe
you should do a little more independent research.

Yes, but they work with the RIAA from before 91 (which is when SS started) 2
"guesstimate" the "inbetweenz".

You keep ignoring the obvious: Soundscan and the RIAA are only tracking
UNITED STATES SALES, NOT WORLDWIDE SALES. So using them as your source
for worldwide sales is useless. If Madonna has estimated world sales of
154 million and Nana Moskori has estimated world sales of at least 200
million, then Madonna can't be the most successful female recording
artist, now can she.

Insidious,

I see that you could not resist "sticking your nose" in other people's

Any person(jilly) who claims that I would support a CHILD MOLESTOR is a
person who IS mentally ill. She/he/it had the audacity to put Osama and
MJ in the same breath as harming innocent people and you wonder why I am
outraged at this creature. How would YOU like to be put into the SAME
category as a MURDERER of THOUSANDS of innocent people. I wonder if YOU
be so forgiving.Maybe you should consider "jilly" as the unstable
one, unless YOU agree with his/her/its SICKNESS. Maybe "its" rants fit
your warped way of thinking. It's amazing how quickly you are at calling
someone mentally ill and ignoring the TRULY sick ones-jilly and
yourself. How could YOU support someone who so FRIVOULSY acts as if
murdering THOUSANDS of people was a joke and compares that murderer to
MJ? Maybe she needs to re-direct her sickness and hate toward the TRUE
culprits-Osama and the catholic priests who HAVE molested HUNDREDS of
innocent children.

I called Jordan Chadler "wayward" because the father did NOT care his
son, He owed $65,000 in BACK child support. He only became re-attached
his son AFTER he found out that MJ had befriended him. Maybe wayward
should apply to the father.

This is what the sick and demented "jilly" posted: "I'm surprised that

This is what the even sicker and demented "jilly" posted on Aug.17,2002:
"You're the one to bring him(Osama) into this equation."

Either you are on crack or you are mentally disturbed. These are YOUR
posts and YOUR words. Are you denying that you put that MURDERER Osama
and MJ in the same breath? If you do deny it,then you are a bigger ass
than I thought you were.

This has nothing to do with obsession, but has EVERYTHING to do with
creatures like you having the audacity to THINK that you can put another
human being who has done no harm to ANYONE in the same category of a
murderer of thousands of innocent people.

If you are STILL too sick to ADMIT that you are a lying coward, then do
the desperate thing that all cowards do and "killfile" me. It will not
matter, because in the end you will still be a lying, guillble
HATER/BASHER.

The nerve of you idiots never ceases to amaze me.You act as if you have
the right to bash a person with no rebuttals. Think again dearie, you do
NOT have that right!
The really sickening thing is that you call someone obsessed because
he/she does not agree with your warped venom. The obsession is YOU and
others like you who continue to come to a forum with the sole intent of
hating and bashing a person.

That is the epitome of MENTAL ILLNESS!!!

Jilly believes MJ is a child molester, and like many decent people, feels a
child molester is the scum of the earth, same as Osama.

Now you dont believe MJ is a child molester, and that is fine. You have a right
to your opinion like Jilly does. But when you go and wish somebody to be
murdered just because they have a negative opinion of MJ, that is going to far,
even for you!

Wishing someone would be killed by Osama for not liking MJ crosses the line.

there is no way you can even begin to clean this post up with your loony logic
