WATCHA 2000: 17-CITY MEGASHOW WITH TOP LATIN ROCK & HIP HOP BANDS TO
KICK OFF AUG. 11 IN LOS ANGELES

MOLOTOV, CAFÉ TACUBA, OZOMATLI, A.N.I.M.A.L., ATERCIOPELADOS, ENANITOS
VERDES ARE CONFIRMED FOR SECOND YEAR OF WATCHA

COORS LIGHT IS WATCHA’S FIRST NATIONAL SPONSOR

50 CENTS PER TICKET BENEFITS HISPANIC ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND
UNIVERSITIES (HACU).

LOS ANGELES, CA - Grammy-nominated artists Café Tacuba, Molotov,
Enanitos Verdes, Aterciopelados, and Argentinian metal rockers
A.N.I.M.A.L., and cultural hybrid Ozomatli are among the artists
confirmed for this year’s WATCHA 2000. This summer’s most innovative
tour brings together an eclectic collection of top Latin alternative,
rock and hip-hop acts in an l8-city trek across the U.S. beginning Aug.
11 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, and continuing through
Labor Day at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Local, national and
international bands will be added to the bill in each city. (See below
for tour markets.)

Coors Light has signed on as presenting sponsor for WATCHA 2000. "Coors
is already an integral part of the Latino music scene through its
association with Latin music sensation MANA. Now, through the WATCHA
Tour, Coors brings the hottest ‘alterlatino’ music experience to rock
fans everywhere," said Carlos Soto, director, Corporate Relations, Coors
Brewing Company,

In addition to great music, WATCHA 2000 will also benefit adult Hispanic
college students across the United States. Fifty cents from every
ticket sold on the tour will go to a special scholarship fund at the
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). Scholarships
will be awarded to students in each of the l8 WATCHA 2000 tour markets.

Created last year by Vans Warped Tour producer Kevin Lyman, CAA’s Daryl
Eaton and top Latin rock manager Jorge Mondragón, WATCHA 2000 has added
7 more cities to this year’s tour: Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Boston,
New York and Washington DC.

Says Lyman, "It is a nod to the expanding interest in Latin rock from a
diverse audience that we have been able to expand WATCHA’s reach. A few
years ago, audiences for rock en español consisted primarily of rockers
from Mexico and South and Central America whose first language was
Spanish. As the movement has grown, the audience includes as many, if
not more, fans whose first language is English."

The word WATCHA, loosely translated as "check it out," is a Spanglish
combo of "mira" (look) and "watch," and illustrates the cultural bridge
that a show like WATCHA brings to rock and roll. Also, "nos watchamos"
is a common Spanglish expression that means "I’ll catch you later" or
"I’ll see you later".

Spin Magazine described the first WATCHA as "a seamless marathon of
bands… packed with Latino punks, Goths, rockeros and generic hipsters
flying various national flags… a day of well-earned brown pride."

Adding to the festival nature of this year’s tour is the presence of the
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), La Banda
Elastica, one of the most respected rock en español magazines in the
country, Alternative Press, the important new music magazine and other
local and national organizations.

Tickets for the first dates of WATCHA 2000 go on sale in June. Tour
dates follow.

WATCHA 2000: A STRONG LINEUP

The first edition of WATCHA was filled with top names like Argentina’s
Illya Kuryaki, Todos Tus Muertos, Bersuit Vergarabat, Puerto Rico’s Puya
and, among several local and international acts, Mexico’s Molotov and
Café Tacuba, who come back this year. This year’s line up is equally if
not more impressive:

Molotov, the most successful Latin hardcore rap ever (they sold a
million copies of their debut, 1997’s Donde jugarán las niñas, for which
they were nominated for a Grammy), is a frontal verbal and musical
attack that stirs crowds and alarms the most puritan segments of
society---Mexican censorship has only increased the band’s appeal.

Café Tacuba, to many one of the best bands in any language, is an
unconventional outfit of acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, drum machine
and a charro-like singer who changes his name with each album. Twice
nominated for a Grammy, the Mexico quartet shifts effortlessly from
Mexican folk, Afro Cuban rhythms, rock, rap, electronica and virtually
any sound they need to adorn its elaborate lyrics.

Featuring an ethnic makeup that’s as diverse as the Los Angeles City
they live in, Ozomatli use congas and claves, turntables and tables,
trumpets and saxophones to create a unique blend of modern day S-O-U-L
music. Over their short history, the ten-piece band has managed to
tweak people’s consciousness with their highly politicized amalgamation
of hip-hop, salsa, ska, funk and jazz. They are presently scheduled to
appear only on the California dates.

Legends in their homeland of Argentina, Enanitos Verdes (Green Dwarfs)
are double Grammy nominees for their last two albums on which they
collaborated with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan and Doobie Bros).
Marciano Canteros’ strong vocals and Felipe Staiti’ powerful guitar’s
riffs are part of the reason that Enanitos Verdes are considered by
critics to be "the ambassadors of Rock Argentino".

From Colombia comes another first timer in WATCHA: Aterciopelados ("the
velvety ones"), one of the most acclaimed names in the genre. Led by
charismatic singer/guitarist Andrea Echeverri and bassist Héctor
Buitrago Aterciopelados have evolved over four albums from a neo
punk-meets-bolero attitude into a versatile cumbia/pop/trip-hop rarity.
The band’s latest album, 1998’s Caribe Atómico, was nominated for a
Grammy.

A name that might be new to U.S. audiences is Argentina’s #1 metal
outfit: A.N.I.M.A.L. (an acronym for "accosted our indians died while
fighting") who will start its summer on the WARPED tour (aimed toward
the ska/punk crowd), and then move to WATCHA 2000.

"It will be the first time A.N.I.M.A.L. has done a caravan tour of the
U.S., so it will be good preparation for WATCHA," said CAA’s Daryl
Eaton. "They’re also a great bridge for the WARPED audiences to WATCHA
– I think the crowd will be blown away by the power of Latin rock."
