Some newspaper wrote a column about how there's a race to be the best
selling artist of the decade. Right now they said Mariah is in the lead
but Celine Dion and Garth Brooks are getting close to her, they said
Mariah has sold between 85-90 million albums in the 90's, Celine has sold
between 70-75 million albums in the 90's, and Garth Brooks has sold about
70 million albums in the 90's. They also mentioned Celine will release 2
albums this year and Garth will release another 2 CD album and Garth has
plans to release 2 more albums next year, so Mariah does have good
competition for best selling artist of the decade.

I beleive Billboard has stated that Garth Brooks has sold over 80mil. in
the U.S. alone. Does it really matter who is the best selling artist
this decade? No one remember that kind of stuff anyway.

I agree entirely, both Garth and Mariah do excellent music and that is all
that matters.

YEAH RIGHT!!! Mariah is the best seeling artist of the decade so face up to
it..she has been and is.......If u have been keeping up with recent Mariah
apperances (you would be if u were a real fan) you would know that she is the
best selling artist of the decade..yeah Garth might be close behind but he
isn't there yet and Mariah is PROVEN to have sold more then 90 million..even 95
..so if Garth is 80 he still has a long way to go! GOO MARIAH!

I love Mariah but, teh facts have since changed she is nolonger the
largest selling artist this decade. The 80mil. fig. was just for the
U.S. and worldwide he has reached over the 100mil. mark. and like I said
before, who really cares? Mariah could not hold the title forever, but
she still is the top selling female artist of the decade. I think you
need to relax a bit and not take it so personal. You can't change it so
why worry about it?

Exactly. Hell, by the time the 90's are over, Mariah might not even the biggest
selling female of the decade. In the USA Today, last week, they said Celine has
sold over 60 million albums in the last 30 months alone, and she has 2 new
albums coming. One is a Christmas album which will probably be flying off the
shelves. But, that doesn't make Celine better, so who really cares?

OK, why is this so hard Mariah has NOT sold more than Garth Brooks,
FACT!!!! He has sold over 100mil.albums worldwide. Mariah has sold
around 92mil. albums worldwide. I dont see how anyone can say Mariah is
still the largest selling artist this decade. After all this is the
group that loves to use the line "give credit were credit is due", so
does that not apply to Mariah fans? Personally I hate Garth Brooks, but
he still has sold over 100mil. this decade.

Why is it people come on here and give facts without giving sources,
if Garth Brooks sold 100 million albums or whatever where do you get that
information? Bottom line Mariah Carey won The Best Selling Artist Of The
Decade Legend Award a couple months at 1998 World Music Awards( which is
just based on sale) not Garth Brooks. I know the decade isn't over but
do you Mariah is going to sit silently in a corner and sell no albums for
the next two years, I think not, Mariah also has plans to release at
least 2 more albums in the next year and a half. Like I said in my
original post the race is close between Mariah, Garth, and Celine and I'm
sure it matters to their record company and matters a bit to them whether
they admit or not.

Well then you had better inform the World Music Awards, Billboard
Magazine, MTV, VH1 and several other music information sources. They ALL
report Mariah is the leading selling artist of the nineties. I even have
on tape Prince Albert at the WMA'S announcing it and handing her the
award. The award sits on her shelf right NOW. It says: MARIAH CAREY
--LEADING SELLING ARTIST OF THE NINETIES.
You better inform all these sources that Duane Wise has different
figures.

You had better recheck Billboard, because they have since updated. At
the time Mariah receaved that award she was the top selling artist of
the decade, but not more than two or three weeks later Garth had passed
her sales.

C'mon, although Celine Dion has to be credited with her good songs that
carry her "Let's Talk About Love" over the 8 million mark, everybody knows
it was "Titanic" that really did it. And I mean, how many millions can a
Christmas album sell? (Probably Celine's hot streak will make it more than
usual, but still!) And I believe the other album is a French one? That alone
will reduce its potential.

I really have a problem with Garth's albums being counted as separate
albums. Yes, if people had the choice to buy them individually, then by all
means count them as separate albums. But when it comes in a box-set, then
to me it should be counted as one. I think that's only fair. I just think
it's slightly dubious any other way.

No, because Celine's Falling Into You (fourth English album) sold about 25
million worldwide. And her previous French album sold 7 million
worldwide...not Titanic status but not bad.
I don't know how well Mariah's Christmas album sold worldwide, but I think it
was 3 or 4 million in the US alone. There's potential there...

There you have it! Her Music album did very good in the USA i think hitting the
number 3 mark...and hey it was christmas album! Plus her Merry Christmas album
reached incredible status in other countries....in japan its like the best
selling album from another country..they go crazy for the song All I Want For
Christmas is You.......and i mean her other album Music Box sold over 25
million world wide...i have the pic where she gets the award and she is very
happy....Mariah's on fire.....thats all u can say

well i mean Mariah has world wide status and i mean her music box album alone
sold 25 million WORLD Wide..Plus her respected Merry Christmas did awesome in
places like USA and Japan ETC...Daydream and Butterfly didn't do too bad
either.....all her albums did good..she is the only artist to have her first 7
consecutive albums go TRIPLE platinum....sooo i mean if they went TRIPLE then
that means she sold a ton.....and they did very good...and are u forgeting her
singles?? SHE HAS HAD 13 number one singles with a lot of them going platinum
themselves...Mariah is the best selling artist of the 90's...and yeah...at the
WMA's they said so too...yeah i do give props to all the other artists but
Mariah is the best selling female artist of the 90's

Well, with the exception of Titanic, I can only think of Up Close and Personal,
which wasn't exactly a box office hit. So, you can't just blame the movies,
because that song was on her album before they decided to put it in the movie.
Beauty and the Beast didn't go #1.

I got this information on the Michael Jackson newsgroup so I don't
know if it's true. Someone wrote a long post saying how Billboard will
count albums sold to decide how much artists sold in the 90's therefore
coming up the best selling artist of thsi decade, some of artists
expected to be on the Top 10 artists of the decade are,

Michael Jackson
Garth Brooks
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion
Janet Jackson
Whitney Houston
Madonna
Toni Braxton
TLC
Guns n' Roses

Of coarse this list could change by the end of this decade. But the
person also said Billboard won't figure in and count Greatest Hits or
Remix albums. So they wouldn't figure in sales for Blood On The Dance
Floor because it's a remix album. If this is true the only album sales
they could not possibly count is MTV Unplugged so far for Mariah, but
Mariah would still be at about 80 million. This would probably hurt
Garth Brooks the most because two of his albums at least have been like
Greatest Hits albums and both sold very well for him. I guess we'll just
have to wait until the end of the decade.

They HAVE to be using something besides album sales. Braxton's debut album was
huge, but I think her second didn't break more than 3 or 4 million in the US.
And that's only two full albums versus at least 4 or more for everyone except
TLC (another odd one on this list). Perhaps singles are being factored? TLC
and Braxton *did* at least have some very big singles...

billboard get their figures from the r.i.a.a who do certify singles, however
the only totals that r.i.a.a have published for u.s. sales are album
sales.this is probably because the r.i.a.a has yet to certify singles sales
of alot of older artists(the beatles for instance have hand their singles
certified gold(500,000) yet some of their singles sold more than 5 million in
the u.s.) and singles definatly count as sales. that is why mariah carey is
the biggest selling artist of the decade(singles+albums) but garth has sold
more albums.

Toni Braxton first album sold 8 million and Secrets sold 6 million for a total
of 14 million. TLC's Crazysexycool sold 10 million and Oooh On The TLC Tip sold
4 million for a total of 14 million.
The other artists (THESE ARE ONLY US SALES FOR THE 90's) named were:
Michael Jackson (Dangerous-6 million, HIStory-3 million, but since it was a
double cd, 6 million. Blood On The Dance Floor- 500,000)= 12.5 million THIS
DECADE (US)

Garth Brooks (Beyond The Season sold 3 million, Garth Brooks sold 9 million, In
Pieces sold 8 million, No Fences sold 16 million, Ropin' The Wind sold 13
million, The Chase sold 8 million, The Collection sold 3 million, The Hits sold
9 million, Garth Brooks #2 sold 4 million, This Is Garth Brooks sold 5
million, Fresh Horses sold 6 million, Sevens sold 5 million)= 89 million IN THE
90's (US)

Mariah Carey (Mariah Carey sold 8 million, Merry Christmas sold 4 million,
Unplugged sold 3 million, Emotions sold 4 million, Music Box sold 10 million,
Daydream sold 9 million, Butterfly sold 3 million)= 41 million

Celine Dion (Celine Dion sold 2 million, Colour of my Love sold 4 million,
Unison sold 1 million, Falling Into You sold 10 million, Let's Talk About Love
is at 8 million)=25 million

Janet Jackson (Rhythm Nation sold 6 million, janet. sold 6 milion, Design of a
Decade sold 2 million and The Velvet Rope is at 2 million)
=16 million

Whitney Houston (I'm Your Baby Tonight sold 4 million, The Bodyguard sdtk. sold
16 million, Waiting To Exhale isn't considered her album, according to RIAA,
and The Preacher's Wife sold 3 million)=23 million

Madonna (Like A Prayer sold 4 million, I'm Breathless sold 2 million, The
Immaculate Collection sold 6 million, Erotica sold 2 million, Bedtime Stories
sold 2 million, Something To Remember sold 2 million, Evita sold 2 million, and
Ray of Light is at 2 million, right now)=22 million

Guns n'Roses (G N'R Lies sold 4 million, The Spaghetti Incident sold 1 million,
Use Your Illusion 1 sold 7 million, Use Your Illusion 2 sold 7 million)=19
million

So, for the biggest selling artists, out of the ones that were named, of the
90's in the US, the order would be:

1. Garth Brooks
2. Mariah Carey
3. Celine Dion
4. Whitney Houston
5. Madonna
6. Guns N'Roses
7. Janet Jackson
8. Toni Braxton
8. TLC
10. Michael Jackson
Plus you can't forget Alanis Morrisette who sold 15 million with one album,
Boyz II Men who's sold 26 million, Kenny G who's sold 28 million, Michael
Bolton who's sold 24 million and some other artists. Later.

According to red_...@webtv.net (Duane Wise):

What the hell are you talking about? If you don't give reference to
what ever it is your responding to, your post means NOTHING and makes
you look like someone who bought a web TV and now thinks he knows what
the NGs are all about...

I came on the internet over 2 1/2 years ago on a......<gasp> computer,
and I was as clueless (and pretty much still am) as they come. So, just
because someone buys a computer, doesn't mean they transform into
knowing everything about the internet. People pay $2500-4500 for a
computer! Ooooooo! And it's also a stupid purchase if the internet is
all you want a computer for. So, being on Webtv is better choice for a
lot of people. Besides, it was pretty obvious, to me any way, that
Duane was speaking about the thread in general, and the persons who
replied after I'd answered his question.

Remember that the Beatles Anthology CD's were double CD's. Menaing that all
the Anthology CD's sales are doubled because they are a doulbe CD. So in
reality the Anthology CD's have sold 8.5 million copies in the US combined, not
15 million. That is how the RIAA certifies doulble albums.
