Well, it was cheesy as fuck naturally but I can honestly say the two nights
of Manowar rank as amongst the best gigs I`ve ever witnessed.
Un-questionably the best sound I`ve heard anywhere for a metal gig, indoor
or outdoor. Played for just over 3 hours the first night - just a sniff
under four the second - hard to argue with that for a festival ticket less
than half the average price ( not to mention a free double DVD, free single,
free beers and 4 Harleys given away! ).
The first night of the festival I saw a bit of Ted Nugent - which was
absolute horse shit - and a brilliant Alice Cooper set. Would never have
considered watching him normally but glad I did...virtually everything was
from the early to mid 70`s albums, his voice souinded great, he also had
amazing sound and did all the stage antics I`d heard about. Ending with him
being hanged in a strait suit. Really impressive.
Earlier in the evening someone who is apparently the reiging "Mr Metal" lit
the eternal flame of heavy metal. Yes, seriously! This was, in effect, a
large egg cup atop a piece of scaffolding. Comical...to say the least.
It has to be said most of the rest of the line up was appalling...only other
bands I bothered watching were WASP ( who were OKish ) and Doro ( who was
meh ). All the others were no mark nobodies ( Whitesnake and Def Leppard
joyously cancelled ). Fortunately someone would often come on stage and
declare a free beer moment which would see an inevitable rush to the beet
tents! One of my mates had dressed up as a viking replete with leopard skin
loin cloth and it was like walking around with a circus attraction...a bunch
of Italians had dressed up as Roman centurions as well and threw a mock
battle. Something else worth saying...the atmosphere on the festival site
was really, really good...don`t think I`ve ever seen such a wide ranging
international audience...there were flags from about 25 different nations
from all over Europe, Canada, the States, South Africa, Japan and Australia
and everyone got along famously.
But ah - Manowar. As said, the sound was simply astonishing, never heard
anything so clear. First night they played their first 3 albums in a row (
playing the song "Manowar" first instead of 5th as per the album ) and in
between Army of Immortals and Bridge of Death they played a new song along
side Warriors of the World.
Second night it was the next 3 albums although they again started with
Manowar and played the same 2 "bonus" songs again. They played Crown and the
Ring live with the original choir that sung it 20 years ago ( Adams` voice
was remarkable throughout the performance ). During KoM Joey announced a
woman who`d been asking him all year if she could propose on stage was to
appear with her boyfriend. DeMaio asked him to think very hard...then a
whole slew of semi naked hot women came on stage and danced and stripped all
over him whilst they played Pleasure Slave to make sure he couldn`t be
tempted to stray! As entertaining as it was silly. But overall DeMaio`s
antics and speeches were kept to a minium ( there was a true metal rant, a
happy birthday sing song for Eric and a bit of fan worship ), they just
blasted out note perfect rendittions of all the classics.
Next year apparently they`re doing the festival again and said they`d play
their entire forthcoming album on one of the nights which will apparently be
based around a book by a best selling fantasy authour ( whom I`d never heard
of! ) and would also see some sort of film release. More free beers were
promised and a longer signing session ( they sat for some 7 hours signing on
one of the days ).
Say what you will about this band, and taste is of course subjective, but
this was simply fantastic...and worth every inch of the 1,400 mile round
drive it took to get there!!
I wish I'd been there, sounds like someone had a great weekend of TRUE
METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Say what you say about DeMaio's rants, but the man is more metal than John
Deere tractor engine.

You lucky man. When I saw him do that last time, I still think it's one of
the creepiest stage moments in rock history.
Certainly did - there were *loads* of Brits there, spoke to people from
Bristol, Leeds, Scotland, Somerset, Manchester, Wales...on the first night
there were tons of UK related flags waving about. It was a bit off putting
standing next to some mulleted East German on the second night telling me he
was a rabid Spurs fan and hates the German football team - then he launched
into a version of the Great Escape and starting singing "Come on England -
fuck Deutschland" - did my best to shut him up before I got my head kicked
in!
It seems both nights will get put onto DVD - can`t wait.

Have you decided about Bloodstock yet?
The strange German bloke wasn't CK was it?
I'm still uncertain about Bloodstock, however as long as I can afford
it I'll be there, and my eldest is looking forward to joining me. He
can't wait to see Helloween and Iced Earth, and he's quite keen to see
Opeth and Eluveite.
Was he drinking whine while the rest of the loin cloth sporters
werw swilling beer?

Sounds like a lot better time and show than what most bands do. Many
of which can hardly be bothered to make it to the stage on time and so
on.
Tom
I think we can safely say it wasn't our favourite German, he might
hate the rest of his countrymen but he wouldn't have been at a Manowar
show.

That is fucking great. Although, I'm a bit offended that I was not
contacted to be "Mr. Metal".
I'll nominate you for next year.
