Was this weeks NME CD worth getting?? Who was on it?

not much but it does have the excellent AM180 by Grandaddy, which was only
otherwise released on limited vinyl and their album
worth Ł1.10!

OK, I know it's a bit late now, but this kind of thing appeals to me:

1. GARBAGE 'Dumb' - I'm sure this underground band are glad of the exposure.
You won't believe this but it uses percussion loops, chopped-up guitar
sounds and a sort of stop-start bit.

2. FEEDER 'Suffocate' - A minor hit single last year if I remember rightly.
If you'd like to like Radiohead but can't understand them because you've
never had any negative feelings in your life, then Feeder are the band for
you.

3. GRANDADDY 'A.M. 180' - A bit like lo-fi country rock with electronic
overtones, but good. In fact more than good. But you should have the LP by
now.

4. NICK CAVE 'Red Right Hand' - As featured on another free CD from the
last-ever VOX magazine and apparently the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack. Sounds
like Nick Cave.

5. NAOMI 'The Dancer' - Vaguely folkish new singer-songwritery woman.
Possibly promising.

6. SNAPPER 'Buddy' - Sounds like a punk band covering an 80s new romantic
hit. I think they're Kiwis. It does include the word 'fucking' though.

7. MERCURY REV 'Tonite It Shows' - From the people who brought you 'Goddess
on a Hiway' and 'Yerself Is Steam'. This orchestra-enhanced track off that
new album everyone's raving about shows that their songs might be better
than their spelling.

8. The PARADISE MOTEL 'Derwent River Star' - Album track. Sort of
female-fronted country folk type stuff.

9. BABYBIRD 'Take Me Back' - You know how Stephen Jones kept complaining
that people bought his records and vitriolically abused anyone who had the
audacity to come to one of his gigs? Well, if he keeps churning out shite
like this dirge then he won't be having those problems for much longer. Oh
and be sure to avoid the album 'There's Something Going On' because it's on
there as well.

10. CABLE 'Hexagon Eye' - My brother bought their first album mainly because
of the song they did for the Sprite advert, and it's actually surprisingly
good. This is a track off the next one, which exhibits a cleaner production
style (by the same bloke who does Idlewild).

11. RIALTO 'The Underdogs' - A bit of a cheat this one, because it was
recorded for a major label. It's a bit of a slow one, with similar subject
matter to Gene's 'Sleep Well Tonight' and it's not as good as the singles
but I'll probably get the album sometime.

12. The WISEGUYS 'Search's End' - That bloke who looks like Connor Reeves
attempts to tell a story without conventional lyrics and vocals; so that'll
be six minutes of samples then, all repeated at least five times for no
obvious reason.

13. SOUND 5 'Heavy Transit' - They appear to be the new Space.

14. The JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION 'Attack' - The blurb in the paper claims
that this was a complicated session with a DJ working 12 decks while the
JSBX played and someone else rode the faders. Unfortunately no-one seems to
have brought a tune with them.

15. The STRIKE BOYS 'The Rhyme' - So called because it features a sample of
808 State/ MC Tunes' 'The Only Rhyme that Bites'. It also goes on for eight
minutes without actually really going anywhere.

16. The EGG 'Number Cruncher (The Porridge Gun Mix)' - Much as I hate to
sound like a trad-rock dullard, I really can't see the point of this record.
I'm not even sure you could dance to it properly.

17. SPACE 'Disco Dolly' - At their best, Space sometimes pull out a
remarkably smart pop single. This is not their best, and it might at a pinch
make a B-side for a good band. Actually there are about ten seconds of
interesting sound effects before the song comes in.

Oh dear.

Two out of seventeen is a poor ratio :)

No wonder I stopped buying the inkies years ago.
