Does anyone know what a Paul Gerard wood oboe is? I'm looking for an
oboe for my daughter to play in school band. I've found a "Paul Gerard
wood oboe" but want to make sure it is a "normal" oboe that can be used
by my daughter. The seller does not have a picture to send me. If
anyone has information, pix, etc on this, please share it with me.
Thank you,
JC

Greetings JC,

My advice would be to purchase a good Yamaha oboe, they are very consistent,
affordable and have a great resale value. Many of my students are playing on
the 411 series and I am very happy with the quality. The Woodwind and
Brasswind has them for about $1800.00 brand new. (1-800-348-5003) Good
Luck Try . . . . . . .

BP;

Thanks for the suggestion, but unless I hit the lottery I'm going to
have to settle for USED.

I don't know the brand, but be aware that there really isn't a "normal"
oboe. There are various levels of keying up to "full conservatory", and even
then there are certain auxilliary keys that not all horns have. Since an
oboe is a substantial investment, it might be best to confer with someone (a
teacher?) who has some familiarity with the instrument. Otherwise if your
daughter is serious you may find that you have to upgrade to a better
instrument before you'd really like to. I second the recommendation to
purchase a good Japanese brand (used is fine) as that way you are assured of
consistency, if not brilliance.

Good luck,

It's so nice to hear about a Paul Gerard oboe! I have a Paul Gerard wooden
oboe, and although I can't speak for all Paul Gerard oboes, I like mine.

Before I got my oboe, my mom did some checking in some oboe newsgroup that
does not seem to exist anymore, and she found out that Paul Gerard isn't
really a "brand." Paul Gerard oboes are made in either France or Italy by
various oboemakers who make oboes for other companies to sell. You can get
a very good oboe, or you can get a very bad one, so I don't know what the
one your daughter might get would be like. If possible, see if you can have
someone check this oboe before you buy it. I once made the mistake of
getting an oboe that did not work quite right. It was a Bundy with what
seemed to be a bit of fluff inside, and it didn't play well below a G.
After I bought it and got it checked out, it turned out that a previous
owner had gouged out the entire top joint and poured super glue down the
inside of the oboe.

If you would like to see a picture of my Paul Gerard, or would like to ask
me any questions about it, e-mail me at star...@att.net

Good luck with the oboe!
