Got my crappy halloween tunes all up and going. Heck, I even managed a
few hours sleep ( thing there is a bud dropped by about midnight, upset,
stayed until 3:30 am ).

Got up, went to todays gig, and ..... no audio from the computer.

Bad.

Well, ok, it did play but crackle when I first started it. Reboot to
clear whatever ... and then no sound at all.

Nothing.

Unplugged the module.... plugged back ... reboot. .... no output.
Checked all the system prefs .... no output .... clock on the wall is
ticking .....

In the end, I did 55 minutes of just mic and guitar.

Chick, it turns out, can't sing any of her tunes without the computer.
She's apparently, like a good karaokier, so tuned in to our backings
that without them she's useless. Couldn't find the pitch to any of her
tunes. I tried to move the key as I played to whatever the hell it was
she was trying to sing, but as I moved to her key, she moved to
somewhere else. A few of those and I'd had enough.

Surprisingly, I was able to get thru my stuff. I say that because I
don't rehearse it just voice and guitar, but hey, it worked. Pretty soon
it was over. Musta been ok, as they rebooked us thru all of next year
afterwards. Go figure.

What I should learn from this is that I don't really NEED the tracks. I
could with a little effort and some balls do these gigs totally "
acoustic ".

I'm being serious here, it really is something I should think about.

Oh, and the problem ???? Who knows, set it all up just a bit ago and
it's working fine. Only two things I can think of, bad cable, or the
beta Line6 drivers I installed for my POD. I took those out at the gig,
but no diff. Maybe it would have needed a power down ??

More as I figure it out.

Nope. Audio.

Laptop to a Presonus AudioBox USB running mac os core audio ( built in )
drivers.

I make my backings from midi's and some real instrument tracks, then
render them to simple stereo mp3's or 16 bit audio files for use at
gigs. More reliable than any midi rig ... even taking yesterday into
account.

And how'd it work today ???

Fine.

I played around with it last night to see if it would mess up again and
it worked without any issues. Took it to todays gig and it worked fine.
Beats me what's up. I suspected there was an issue with the LINE6 beta
drivers I installed two days ago. While the LINE6 driver isn't involved
in running my Presonus, there are some posts on the L6 support forum
suggesting their latest drivers can sometimes mess up the basic audio
output functions in the mac os. Is that the problem ... I doubt it, but
it's a possibility. I uninstalled those drivers and then put them back.
But like I said, it only wouldn't work at the gig, once I got it home it
was fine.

I suspect there is an issue with what you start in what order. I do know
that letting the mac go to sleep will kill output to that interface and
getting it back requires powering it all down and restarting. Just a
reboot won't do it. That problem is unique to my USB interface, the
firewire one I have can handle sleep and wake without issues.

In any case, it worked a charm today so eh, whatever it was I'm past it
for now.

Charlie ? <smack> sorry Charlie.

I was thinking that you woke up and discovered you work better solo
acoustic with no backing chick singer.

I believe I do.

But, the whole gigging for old people is getting tiresome to me. That be
the reason I'm curious about Leo's tunes on the net, and the other post
I did about my buddy who wants to do a cover cd. To make any money, it
seems to me a guy needs to be out there in a bigger pond. I can only
play one place at a time, and in Ohio ( super suck state ) there aren't
even many places worth working live.

If I were selling software again I know how it works. I write something,
set up a web site and start raking in the money .... until Apple kills
me by stealing the idea, or some competitor with more resources joins
in, or ( like happened last time ) the tax man finds some rule I didn't
follow to the letter and fines me out of business.

I know how to make money in real businesses. Problem is, music isn't a
real business. At least not as seen from a performers view. It's some
sort of " art " thing, where you make the product and someone else makes
the money. At least that's the old model. But maybe this net thing
levels the field a bit. Something to explore.

So ..... I'll just go do my old geez gigs 'cause they are there ... and
work on my own tunes and selling those. I'm tired of covers anyway :-)

Yep.

Without the record companies acting as gate keepers, it'd be just a
flood of stuff.

Taking myself as an example, if there were any money in it at all, I
could pump out several tunes a week. The technology to do it is sitting
on my desk.

I don't want to sidetrack this, but a bud of mine in Calif just called.
He want's to do a cover cd and sent a link about the licensing costs.
$850 minimum for 10 tunes, 1000 pieces. I think that's crazy high, he
thinks it's fine. Maybe I posted this last night, not sure, it was late
and I was all into some old Beatle tune I need this afternoon ( damn
covers ), so if I didn't, check this ....

After reading that and a few others, it seems WAY easier to just grab
the acoustic and start in singing about some cute chick that winked at
me at the mall yesterday :-)

physical product (i.e. CDs) always give you residual control

but if you're incautious enough to get a Harry Fox licence for a cover that
you release on Napster/Rhapsody/whatever (selling price 2 cents) means
you will be paying for each sale out of your *losses*.
