Out of the House, Into the Jungle: My first House Mix

I just finished my first House / DNB mix and it was incredibly fun. I
mixed the house tracks first then decided to lay some 70s, 80s, and 90s
tracks over cuts that were primarily instrumental. I suppose this is
how a Hip-Hop DJ would approach EDM. There's even a bit of scratching
in it.

Hope you enjoy it. It's 90% funky / soulful house and the little bit
of DNB there is ragga or very Hip-Hop-like. Not my usual semi-sloppy
mixes :)

It's pretty nice, if a bit rough. And I like the "Sloppy" touches
(hearing the hand pitching - one of my favorite things.) Being that
you are new to this, the t/l is a little unimaginative.

Also, I like you Haroon.. but I think you have this idea that you are
reinventing the wheel. Most GOOD house Dj's use a lot of 80s pop and
hip hop in their mixes. Many of them scratch. Remember - the term
HOUSE, itself, refers to the concept of "Music played by Knuckles and
Hardy at the Warehouse (and Music Box)" - which ranged from Adonis to
Joe Tex to Dolemite to Depeche Mode and on... The preloaded factory
version of the genre encompasses all of these influences you are re-
infusing and many more.

Watch MAESTRO and the BBC series PUMP UP THE VOLUME for a nice
spotters' education on the evolution of DISCO music. House is just an
extension of what was created in the late 60s early 70s. Also pick up
a copy of LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE... just the tracklists at the
end are enough to educate.

How so? Not asking in like -- a pissed off way, just curious.

I guess I just heard so many really boring EDM mixes on the Internet
that I figured it was an exception not a norm.

Which House DJs are really going toward this? I mean, a more rapid
style with interesting blends along the way? Pushing the creative
envelope a bit. That's the type of stuff that gets me regardless of
the genre being mixed.

I really enjoy SPank Rock's mixes - I'll try to up Fabricdead for you
and post a link... really nice Bambaataa style mix that spans all
genres. I like the new Discobelle Mixin It Up 57 by Royal Rumble...
good downtempo disco mix. Lots of Danny Wany and Metro Area style
stuff in it.

Also not a very sleak mix... and I love dirty mixes. That's why
Harvey always is among my faves.

You might like rub and tug too... although it's a bit dubbier.

have you tried craze's fabriclive yet?

probably not your bag but in terms of hip hop djs playing current uk
house stuff (mainly bassline type shit), its a pretty good starter...

Got the documentaries. Gonna try and pick up the book today. I
actually had this on my Amazon wish list before you mentioned it.

Jesus, even I've read that book already, and I'm probably the least
electronic music inclined dude in here :-P
