I have a contest going with my students. They are to come up with songs
that mention other singing groups or their songs in their lyrcs. This
must be an intentional mention (i.e. Neil Diamond's "America" is not
about the band America).

I came up with Don McLeans' "American Pie" for mentioning "Eight Miles
High" by te Byrds and "Life In A Northern Town" (artist name escapes me)
for mentioning the Beatles.

Anybody got any ideas?

How about "Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers. It mentions "Sgt. Peppers
Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Also, the song "Big Country" by Big Country.

"Man On The Moon" by REM mentions Elvis (...Andy are you goofin' on
Elvis...).

"Rockaria!" by ELO talks about Chuck Berry.

Good Luck,

Do they have to be songs that mention groups? What about individual singers?
Anyway, there's "The Motown Song" by Rod Stewart, "I Dig Rock 'n Roll Music"
by Peter Paul and Mary; if you allow singers, "Radar Love" by Golden Earring
has "Brenda Lee coming on strong", and "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley
lists several soul singers.

Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" mentions "Frank Zappa and the Mothers"
Springsteins "Thunder Road" mentions "Roy Orbison sang for the lonely"
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" mentions "I hope Neil Young will remember..."
Johnny Rivers' "Summer Rain" mentions "Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
Little River Band's "Reminiscing" mentions "Glen Miller's band was better than before"
The Righteous Brothers' "Rock and Roll Heaven" mentions a whole bunch of dead artists,
including Jim Morrison, Jim Croce, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin
Rick Nelson's "Garden Party" mentions several artists, including Dylan and Chuck Berry (as
"Johnny B Goode"
The Guess Who mentions their own earlier song in "When the band was singing Shakin'
All Over" (does that count? I guess you did say "other" groups or songs)
Three Dog Night, in "Never Been to Spain" sing "... I kinda like the Beatles"

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sweet Home Alabama:

Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her.
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down.
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember

After "American Pie", one of the most often requested songs in this newsgroup
is "Life Is A Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)", by Reunion.

MONTEREY
- words and music by Eric Burdon, Victor Briggs, John Weider,
Barry Jenkins and Danny McCulloch
- lyrics transcribed from the recording by Eric Burdon & The Animals
(peaked at #15 in 1968)

The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
Down in Monterey, down in Monterey

Young gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music bein' born of love
Children danced night and day
Religion was bein' born
Down in Monterey

The Byrds and The Airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankar's music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masekela's music was black as night
The Grateful Dead blew everybody's mind
Jimi Hendrix, baby believe me, set the world on fire, yeah
His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were groovin' real loud, yeah
You wanna find the truth in life, don't pass music by
And you know I would not lie
No, I would not lie
No, I would not lie
Down in Monterey

All right!

------ instrumental break ------

Three days of understanding
Of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
Do you believe me, yeah
Down in Monterey, down in Monterey, yeah
Down in Monterey, down in Monterey, yeah
I think that maybe I'm dreamin'

Monterey! Monterey!
Down in Monterey
Did you hear what I said?
Down in Monterey! Monterey!
I said Monterey, Monterey, Monterey, ey, ey, ey, ey ...
Monterey!
Ow! Monterey!

How about from Dylan's new one, the epic "Highlands":

I'm listening to Neil Young

Turn it down.

Here's one, and it's very cool, if you can get hold of a copy of "29 times the
pain" by a
Newcastle band called the Wildhearts (unfortunately it's quite a rarity as they
are not
popular and it was a b-side) then you will find an absolute treasure trove of
mentions
of bands and artists from the sex pistols, to the beatles, to the rolling
stones, to Kurt
Cobain and if you are really lucky on the album "The Best of The Wildhearts"
there is a
re-recorded version with just one lyric changed, the original was "I'm gonna
miss Kurt Cobain"
and it was changed to "Where you hidin' Richey James?" There are a lot more
different mentions
to what I have said. This song would win any competition hands down.

First of all "Life in a Northern Town" was performed by Dream Academy.
Chicago (the music group) has a couple of songs mentioning other
groups/musicians. These 2 songs have only been officially released on
a Canadian compilation CD called "Overtime" though (they were
originally recorded for the unreleased album "Stone of Sisyphus."

"Stone of Sisyphus" has the lyric
"Blood sweat and tears will turn faith into will"

Although the reference isn't to the group "Blood Sweat and Tears" the
songwriter used this lyric on purpose with the intent of hearing one
of the 4 original members of Chicago mention "that other horn group."
It's the songwriter (Dawayne Bailey's) way of using tongue-in-cheek
humor.

"Bigger Than Elvis"- The reference is obvious- written by producer
Peter Wolf and Jason Scheff. Scheff's father, Jerry, played bass for
Elvis Presley and this is a touching tribute to him.

Well, for one: "Life In A Northern Town" is by the Dream Academy.
Other than that;
"Eyes Of The World" by the Finn Brothers mention Engelbert Humperdinck;
"She Goes On" by Crowded House mentions Frank Sinatra

"Twisting" by They Might Be Giants mentions The Young Fresh Fellows and the
dB's. TMBG also mentions rapper Kurtis Blow in "Where Your Eyes Don't Go."

Juliana Hatfield sings about the Violent Femmes and the Del Fuegos in "My
Sister".

Mojo Nixon mentions Elvis in "Elvis Is Everywhere" and, well, "Debbie Gibson Is
Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child" needs no further explanation. :)

And as a diehard Sparks fan I would be absolutely inconsolable if I gave up the
chance to mention them, so...they sing about Frank Sinatra in "Something for
the Girl with Everything". ("You wouldn't want to dent Sinatra, no.") Also
in re. Sinatra, Cake's got a song called "Frank Sinatra".

All I can think of right now.

You folks in the States don't know how lucky you are. Back in 1989, a
couple of cherubic girlies called "The Reynolds Girls" hung out in the
office lobby of the gents who gave us Kylie Minogue & Rick Astley, namely
Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and as Mr Waterman was leaving one night, they
jumped out from behind a potted plant and thrust a tape into his hands.
The result was the Top 10 hit (thankfully their only outing) "I'd Rather
Jack". The line that followed the title was "Than Fleetwood Mac". There
might have been more name checks in the song, but I'm afraid my ears just
used to seize up after the opening chords. Just in case anyone thought it
was a misprint, or I had accidentally deleted some text, I will repeat
again the offending lines:-

I'D RATHER JACK
THAN FLEETWOOD MAC

You should thank us for not sending this lot over. We still owe you one
after Disco Duck:)

There's an idea for a thread - UK acts you wish we hadn't sent you (just
the seriously crap stuff - some people like Oasis remember) - and vice
versa. If you're anywhere else (ie Australia - you did send us Angry
Anderson's "Suddenly") feel free to join in.

"Glass Onion" by The Beatles ( quite possibly the winner....? )
01: "I told you 'bout Strawberry Fields, you know the place
where nothing is real" ( refers to "Strawberry Fields Forever" )
02: "I told you 'bout the Walrus and me, man" ( refers to "I Am The Walrus" )
03: "I told you 'bout the Fool on the hill" ( refers to "The Fool On The Hill" )
04: "Fixing a hole in the ocean" ( refers to "Fixing A Hole" )
05: "Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet, yeah" ( refers to "Lady Madonna" )
( Invariably someone will point out that Lennon, who wrote "Glass Onion",
only *really* authored two of the songs mentioned above, the other three
being Paul's compositions - but let's not get THAT picky. After all, all the
songs above were and still are credited to both. )

..which brings up "Savoy Truffle" ( George's tune ) - "We all know
ob-la-di-bla-da" ( refers to Paul's "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" ).

"Sara" by Bob Dylan
= "Staying up in the Chelsea hotel for days writing
'Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands' for you..."
