Petty's Greatest Hits credits him with writing this song - but I believe
someone else performed it in the 80s or late 70s - or a song similar to
it. Bad Finger and Mott the Hoople come to mind. Help!

I'm not familiar with Tom Petty's version but here's the lyrics to
the Thunderclap Newman version from the seventies. I got them from
alt.music.lyrics last July. Since I don't have a recording of this
song I wasn't able to verify them, but they seem to be consistent
with my memory of the song.

Something In The Air

Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here

And you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Lock up the streets and houses
Because there's something in the air
We got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here

And you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Hand out the arms and ammo
We're gonna blast our way through here
We got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here

And you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Hi,

Something In The Air was an Oldie from the late 60's. Pete Townshend of
THE WHO put a band called THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN together. One of its members,
John "Speedy" Keen wrote the song Something In The Air. It reached # 1 in
the UK in 1969. It was the only hit for T N. In my opinion the original
version is better than Petty's cover.

Now here are the lyrics in the air <g>:

SOMETHING IN THE AIR
Call out the instigators because there's
something in the air,
We got to get together sooner or later because
the revolution's here
And you know it's right and you know that

it's right
We have got to get it together

We have to to get it together now.
Block up the streets and houses because

there's something in the air

We got to get together sooner or later because
The revolution's here
And you know that it's right

And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Hand out the arms and ammo, we're gonna

blast our way through here

We got to get together sooner or later because
the revolution's here

THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN

Thunderclap Newman did the song originally in 1969. A trio from Britain,
the Who's Pete Townshend helped form the band and played bass on their
one-and-only LP under an assumed name.
