Anyone remember Country Joe and the Fish, and the Fixin' To Die Rag?
Remember the Fish Cheer? Would appreciate someone posting the words ...
to the clean version.

Thank you.

The Fish Cheer & -- I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag

Gimme an F!
F!
Gimme an I!
I!
Gimme an S!
S!
Gimme an H!
H!
What's that spell ?
FISH!
What's that spell ?
FISH!
What's that spell ?
FISH!

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Huh!

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Hi Tom. First let me say that I think your web site is great and I refer to
it often (http://www.crl.com./~tsimon/). I also send people there when they
request information about songs such as "Louie, Louie" or "Battle of New
Orleans". Keep up the good work.

Country Joe McDonald has his own web site at
http://www.dnai.com/~borneo/index.html where you'll find the lyrics to
several versions of "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" as well as the sheet
music. And here's my transcription of the classic Woodstock recording from
August 1969:

I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag
Words and Music by Joe McDonald

Well, come on all o' you big strong men

Uncle Sam needs your help again

Got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Viet Nam
Put down your books and pick up a gun
We're gonna have a whole lot of fun

And it's one two three, what're we fightin' for

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

The next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five six seven, open up the pearly gates
Well now, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die

Now, come on Wall Street, don't be slow
Why man, this is war-a-go-go

There's plenty good money to be made

Supplyin' the army with the tools of the trade

Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb

They drop it on Viet Cong

And it's one two three, what're we fightin' for

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

The next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five six seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die

Now, come on generals, let's move fast
Your big chance is here at last
Now you can go out an' get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is one that's dead

And you know that peace can only be won

When they've blown them all to kingdom come

Sing it!
One two three, what're we fightin' for

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

Louder!
The next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five six seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die

--------------- spoken: ---------------
Listen people, I don't know how you expect to ever stop the war
if you can't sing any better than that.
There's about three hundred thousand of you fuckers out there.
I want you to start singin'!
Come on!
---------------------------------------

And it's one two three, what're we fightin' for

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

The next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five six seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die

Now come on mothers throughout the land
Pack your boys off to Viet Nam

Come on fathers, don't hesitate

Send your sons off before it's too late

Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box

All right!

One two three, what're we fightin' for

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

The next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five six seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We're all gonna die

All right

Strange. In the version on my Woodstock-album I recognize clearly the
following words:

>Gimme an F!
>F!
>Gimme an U!
>U!
>Gimme an C!
>C!
>Gimme an K!
>K!

>What's that spell ?

>FUCK!

>What's that spell ?

>FUCK!

>What's that spell ?

>FUCK!

How could I be so wrong?
