"In Birmingham they love the Governor
Now we all did what we could do"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but put together Birmingham,
Alabama and the Governor, and images come to mind
of the governor standing in front of a school, in a face-off
with the national guard, in an effort to prevent
the first black students admitted. So "they love the
governor" for trying to enforce segregation? What else
does this lyric mean?

In my opinion they are talking about others who were racist and telling Neil
Young not to condemn everybody in Alabama for what a group of people did.
That doesn't mean the song or the writers are racist. In the next line they
say "Well we all did what we could do" and I assume they mean they were
against the Governer. I know this song was in response to a Neil Young song
but I forget the whole story.

Because of the way radio has portrayed Skynyrd over the years, the irony of
Ronnie Van Zants lyrics are often missed.

Probably the lyric could be taken either way, in an eye of the beholder
fashion.

I have not gotten this msg yet because my ISP's service is at the
lowest priority for the alt groups and have not seen the original
post. He said, "In Birmingham they love the governor", not that they
did. Think what the next line also said, "boo hoo hoo". The next song
on this album is about a black man he used to get spanked by his mama
for going and listening to play blues on a dobro guitar. The line
simply means, Alabama is a great state except for it's Governer's
actions at the time. Lynyryrd Skynyrd was one of the least of
rascists. MCA thought it would be a good idea if they used a southern
flag for an emblem as they were from the south, which enraged Ronnie
Van Zant at the time because of it's racial implications. Their hands
were kind of tied tho on the sitaution and they reluctantly agreed.
Actually, Sweet Home Alabama is a song that speaks out against the
state's rascist views, not meaning to make it the focus.

This is an interesting view-to say the least-"Astute",..
-HOWEVER.!--
It is an absolute fact that the "Direct Redressing that they give to
Neil Young & *Southern Man*--".. Has Forever.. .Embossed the
Name of Lynard Skynard in the *Racist Hall of Infamy. .*. .

As far as the "Boo!-Hoo!-Hoo!!" suposedly meaning that this is
clearly to show Skynard was opposed to George Wallace is
wishful thinking. . For the phrase("Boo!-Hoo!-Hoo)-is "toned" in
such a way as to be dictating-"That if you got a problem with our
beleifs in separatism-- Tough Shit.."// ".. . Cry Me a River- Yankie.."
So if anything is clear--it's that they are being Sarcastic..

But all of this interpreting is.. ."Academic. ." First you try "EMS
Re-Combination"
"with a repressive protein that blocks the operating cells.. ."
But the newly formed DNA strand carries a mutation.. ...and you've got
a virus again. ..". .. ..
"The Facts of Life"... "..To make an Alteration in the evolment of an
organic
life-system is Fatal.."--".. a codeing sequence cannot be revised once
it has
been established.. .."--"..because by the second day of incubation,-any
cells
that have undergone reversion mutation-give rise to revertant
colonies..like
"Rats--leaving the Sinking Ship.. . ....Then the Ship Sinks.. . ." . .
