Here you go!

Laurie (Strange Things Happen)
Dickey Lee

Last night at the dance I met Laurie
So lovely and warm
An angle of a girl
Last night I fell in love with Laurie
Strange things happen in this world

As I walked her home she said it was her birthday
I pulled her close and said
Will I see you anymore
And suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very very cold
I kissed her goodnight at her door and started home
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back and said
I knocked at her door
And a man appeared
I told him why i'd come
And he said

You're wrong son
You weren't with my daughter
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way
My daughter left this world on her birthday
She died a year ago today

A strage force drew me to the graveyard
I stood in the cold
I saw the shadows gleam
And then I saw my sweater
Lying there upon her grave
Strange things happen in this world

Hey, can somebody tell me if it's just me? Or do these lyrics
*really* sound as Just Plain Wrong as I think they are??

This is the same set of lyrics that can be found everywhere on
the web ... and I don't think they're quite right. It's SO annoying
to see these words everywhere and have them tweak at me like this,
because it seems like whenever I hear the song on the radio, I never
remember to listen carefully and write down what the words are so
I can compare this version.

But I know for an absolute fact that there's at least ONE error.
EVERY site that has this song has the same typo in the second line:
An "angle" of a girl, instead of an "angel." That's how I know
it's really just one person's transcription that's been cut and
pasted to other places.

> Last night at the dance I met Laurie

Now here's the part that really doesn't sound right to me:

> As I walked her home she said it was her birthday
> I pulled her close and said
> Will I see you anymore
> And suddenly she asked for my sweater
> And said that she was very very cold
> I kissed her goodnight at her door and started home
> Then thought about my sweater
> And went right back and said
> I knocked at her door

> And a man appeared ... (snip)

These sentences don't even RHYME, for heaven's sake!

First of all, I think that there's something about walking
her home to her DOOR in the first part, to rhyme with the line
"will I see you any more". Then, there in the second part, I think
it's supposed to be "started home TO BED" which then goes on to
rhyme with "went right back INSTEAD ..." not "went right back and
said" (Because, if you'll notice, they say he "went right back
and said" but then that's not followed up with any line that tells
WHAT he might have said ...)

But wait! There's more!

> A strage force drew me to the graveyard

> Lying there upon her grave

"Gleam" and "grave" ??? How about, he saw the shadows WAVE.
Not only would it make sense, but, guess what? The words
"wave" and "grave" RHYME with each other!

And (as I sing the song to myself for about the bazillionth time)
I would say the phrase actually is

"I stood there in the cold; <-- (or maybe "dark", I'm not sure)
I watched the shadows wave.
And then I looked and saw my sweater ..."

Grrrrr. I hate knowing something's wrong but not knowing
exactly what would make it right.

choosing a pretty dumb thing to be annoyed about, I guess.

"Great White" from lyrics.wanted, posted this fairly recently, is it
possible that this is more accurate?

don't miss Urban Legends now playing at a theater near you...
based on a true story...

Laurie
Dickey Lee
non-album track?
(Addington/Harmon)?

Last night at the dance I met Laurie
So lovely and warm
An angel of a girl

Last night I fell in love with Laurie

Strange things happen in this world...

As I walked her home she said it was her birthday
I pulled her close and said

Will I see you anymore?

Then suddenly she asked for my sweater

And said that she was very very cold

I kissed her good night at her door and started home

Then thought about my sweater

And went right back instead

I knocked at her door and a man appeared

I told him why I'd come, then he said:

You're wrong, son, you weren't with my daughter

How can you be so cruel

To come to me this way?

My Laurie left this world on her birthday
She died a year ago today

A strange force drew me to the graveyard
I stood in the dark

I saw her shallow grave

And then I looked and saw my sweater

Lyin' there upon her grave...

Strange things happen in this...world
