'Mandy' was a massive hit song for Barry Manilow.

But I remember this song was originally called 'Brandy', sung by Scott
English.

I had it on an early 1970's compilation album (K-Tel, or Ronco, I expect).
This was idential I think, to 'Mandy', but with the title name changed.
Anyone have any information about this?

Hi Ian,
Songfile.com
http://www.songfile.com/
lists the song as:

Mandy: written by Scott English and
Richard Kerr

Under "Brandy" it doesn't list Scott English or Richard Kerr.

From what I remember from back when Barry Manilow released
'Mandy' was that it was renamed from 'Brandy' to avoid confusion
with 'Brandy' by Looking Glass....I've always wondered what
Scott English's version sounded like....

Dear Ian:

I always was sure I heard "Brandy" at first, but I was 8 years old
and didn't speak much English. Anyway, your posting reminded me
that I wanted to clarify this all my life. ;-)

www.google.com gave me some hints. Let me share them:

www.angelfire.com/co/helper/manilow.html
| The crowds wanted Barry and his music but they wanted "commercial"
| hits. Barry was a songwriter and was surprised when Clive Davis
| asked him to record a song that had previously been a UK hit for
| its co-writer Scott English, called 'Brandy.' It was at this point
| when frustration set in. He wrestled with this cute, "up-beat"
| song for hours and couldn't make it work. Finally he tried it as
| a slow ballad, and another hit was born. The title "Brandy" was
| changed to "Mandy", to avoid confusion with a song already using
| that name, by a group called " Looking Glass."

www.baggage.co.uk/issue12/wofmer.html
| Tears well up in eyes the world over. But wait... and listen.
| It is in fact a cover version, originally written and sung by
| Scott English and Richard Kerr, and called... wait for it...
| "Brandy". Not only is the song actually about sentimental
| attachment to alcohol, but when Barry sings it, he's hiding
| this fact...

Best regards,
Steffen

The Original is "Brandy" by Scott English (1971 Trojan Records), and it
was on Ronco's "20 Star Tracks" from 1972. "Brandy" has a nice slow
reggae feel to it (a lot better than Manilow's in my opinion). "Mandy"
by Barry Manilow (1975 Arista/Bell Records) is on K-Tel's
"44 Superstars" 2 album set from 1976, and also on "Feelings" from 1977
and on Ronco's "Startrackin' '76" album from 1975. Hope this helps.

Yes there is, but that is "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" by the Looking
Glass you are referring to. This "Brandy" is a completely different
song.

I agree. The original Scott English version is better, but I wouldn't
have described it as reggae. Scott's version is kind of a stately soul
ballad, a little faster than Mr Manilow's, but it still has the lush
orchestration and there's a harp in there too, which is a nice touch.
Scott has an unusual voice, slightly nasal, and sounds a bit like he's
being strangled! 'Brandy' was a big hit in the UK, Europe and Australia
and a few other countries in '71/'72 and his follow-up 'Waterfall
Woman' got a bit of airplay too. I hope he earned a few bucks out of
Barry's version. Anybody know if the original 'Brandy' or any other
Scott English stuff is available on CD?

Hey, I've got "Waterfall Woman" on a Majestic Album (Pre- K-Tel) called
20 Dynamic Hits Volume 3. That is a good song!
