Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone out there knows the lyrics or has the www site for
"Because the Night" by the 10,000 Maniacs.

Thanks!

Cathy.

"Because the Night" is written by Bruce Springsteen
and "by" Patti Smith.

10,000 Maniacs only managed to mutilate the songs original intent and sap
it of any and all emotion. The original is gritty and passionate. Natalie
Merchant made it syruppy sweet.

Same lyrics though.

Absolutely correct! Patti Smith's version is intense and passionate, but
with an undercurrent of desperation. It seems as if she senses the
relationship will not last or is somehow still haunted by a past
break-up.

Natalie Merchant's version is like muzak, technically correct, but lacking
all passion and insight. She lacks the singing ability to put any
true emotion or insight into lines like "desire is hunger, is the fire I
breathe" and "With love we sleep/with doubt the vicious circle turns and
turns/Without you I cannot live, forgive." I doubt she even truly relates
to these lyrics.

I don't know which is sadder: a great version of a great song that is
forgotten or a lame version of a great song that is a big hit.

Bruce's version of this song is also pretty good.

Take me now baby, here as I am.
Hold me close, try to understand.
Desire is hunger, is the fire I breathe.
Love is the banquet on which we feed.

Come on now, try to understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hand. (Note 1)
Take my hand come undercover,
They can't hurt you now, can't hurt you now,
Can't hurt you now.ow.ow.ow..

Because the night belongs to lovers,
Because the night belongs to lust,
Because the night belong to lovers
Because the night belongs to us.

Have I doubt when I'm alone,
Love is a ring a telephone,
Love is an angel disguised as lust,
Here in our bed until the morning comes.

Come on now try to understand,
The way I feel under your command.
Take my hand as the sun descends.
They can't hurt us now , can't hurt us now,
Can't hurt us now..ow..ow.oo

Because the night belongs to lovers,
Because the night belongs to lust,
Because the night belong to lovers
Because the night belongs to us.

With love we sleep with doubt the vicious circle
Turns and burns without you oh I cannot live
Forgive the yearning burning
I believe in time too real to feel
So take me now take me now take me now..ow..ow

Because the night ........

Note 1: Merchant sings Under Your Command here. Smith sings as is.

I just wanted to say that there are those here who disagree, in some
cases quite strongly here, with you. I know I prefer the 10,000
Maniacs version, tho I did hear the other first. I believe the 10,000
Maniacs version is better. I think that it is a bit rude to not only
cut on the song, but on Natalie Merchant herself. Prehaps I think she
sounds better then Patti Smith. If you want to correct a
mis-comseption or preach the wonders of Patti Smith's voice, go ahead.
If you would like to say you like Patti Smith's version better, go
ahead. But to cut on both the 10,000 Maniacs version and Natalie
Merchant herself is quite uncalled for and upsetting. This ng is
usually less rude then some of the music newgroups I read, but every
once in a while something like this comes up and angers me.

If you don't like Natalie Merchant, keep it to yourself. I don't
complain about other songs groups here that I don't like, evn if I
think they are terrible and utterly lacking in talent, and I'd
appreciate if you would do the same.

First, if you personally prefer Merchant's version, then live long and
prosper. That is your personal preference and you are welcome to it. I
didn't necessarily mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. People can criticize
music that I love and I don't pout and cry about it. If it makes you feel
any better, I sincerely think Patti Smith would cut a horrible version of
"Like the Weather."

Second, let's keep the concepts of musical merit and personal preference
separate. I notice you didn't even attempt to refute the points I made
about the respective *merits* of the different versions of the song. I
therefore surmise that you cannot. Why can't you? Because merit, unlike
personal preference, tends more towards the absolute. Smith's version of
the song is simply, qualitatively better than Merchant's version. The
lyrical content of the song calls for an intensity that Merchant
simply cannot muster. That doesn't mean you can't like Merchant's version
more. Which version you like is your personal preference.

Third, you should know that there is a history in rock and roll of
sanitized versions of songs becoming hits after the original versions were
deemed too dangerous/controverial/challenging, etc. This dates to the
1950's when people like Pat Boone made whole careers covering other
artists and making their songs safe, sanitized for the general public.
The historical result of this is that certain songs have been effectively
"stolen" from the artists who originally created them at least in terms of
public perception and history. That, to me, is a crime.

I always try to set the record straight when such misidentification
occurs. That is why I have posted recently that "Love Hurts" is an Everly
Brothers/Roy Orbison/Boudleaux Bryant song, not a Nazareth song (although
Nazareth's version is certainly valid). That is why I have posted that
"Wonderful World" is a Sam Cooke song, not a Herman's Hermits song. And
that is why I say "Because The Night" is a Smith/Springsteen song.
Merchant may have the bigger, more successful, higher charting version of
"Because the Night", but it is NOT her song and it NEVER will be, just as
"I Saw Her Standing There" is not and never will be a Tiffany song.

Finally, as to your request that I "keep it to myself": get real. I
pride myself on my posts being accurate and, hopefully, insightful. If
you don't like 'em, don't read 'em. But I ain't gonna supress the truth
just 'cause you can't deal with it.

Just wanted to add my voice to this discussion. Patti Smith's version is
really good, but I like 10,000 Maniacs' version much better. To say that
Natalie Merchant can't reach the emotion needed is to say that fish
don't need water to live. Natalie Merchant is imho, the best singer of
the 1980's-1990's.

I like both Smith and Merchant's versions. I also said I didn't like
BS's version a while back and got royally flamed. I don't like it but
it's ok if anyone else does. If Springsteen would have just kept some
of the original meaning in it and only changed the words slightly,
instead of having to macho it up, it would of been much better.
