It's from a huge production number in "Animal Crackers", the Marx
Bros' second film with Paramount. It starts with a very long ironic
oration about the good character of Captain Spaulding (Groucho)--
similar numbers appear in other films.
(Funny, while I can sing along with the soundtrack, I can't do the
whole thing verbatim here. But here's my memory:)
GROUCHO: Hello. I must be going.
I cannot stay. I came to say
I must be going.
I'm glad I came, but just the same
I must be going...
DUMONT: For my sake you must stay,
If you should go away
You'll spoil the party I am throwing...!
GROUCHO: I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
But I am telling you
I must be going...
DUMONT: Before you go, will you oblige us
And tell us of you feats so glowing?
GROUCHO: I'll do anything you say!
In fact, I'll even stay!
CHORUS: GOOD!
GROUCHO: But I must be... going....
CHORUS: Hooray for Captain Spaulding, the African Explorer!
GROUCHO: Did someone call me schnorrer?
CHORUS: Hooray, hooray, hooray!
ZEPPO: He went into the jungle, where all the monkeys throw nuts.
GROUCHO: If I stay here I'll go nuts!
CHORUS: Hooray, hooray, hooray!
He put all his reliance
In courage and defiance
And risked his life for science!
GROUCHO: (dancing a wild reel) Hey, heyyyyyip! Ha!!!
DUMONT: He is the only white man to cover every acre!
CHORUS: Hooray, hooray, hooray!
Sorry, that's all I remember. Maybe more than you wanted, even, but
it was fun! The song became one of Groucho's signature songs (yes, it
was the theme of You Bet Your Life), the other one being "Lydia the
Tatooed Lady".
"She has eyes that men adore so
And a torso even more so..."
Very funny stuff. Used for a sweetly comic punch in Terry Gilliam's
"The Fisher King", sung by Robin Williams...
yours,
Jilly (tattooed and often a lady, but not a tattooed lady)
ps. I'm looking for the lyrics of the rap songs "(Make That) Tootsie
Roll" and "(Thought I Saw A) Puddy Tat". Any help?
