Hallo Heinz,

hier sind die Nächte von San Francisco:

- San Franciscan Nights #

This following program is dedicated to the city
And people of San Francisco.
Who may not know what they are beautiful,
And so is their city.
This is a very personal song,
So if a few cannot understand it
Particularly those who are European residents,
Save up all your breath
And fly Translove Airways to San Francisco, USA.
Then maybe you understand this song.
It will be worth it
If not for the sake of this song,
But for the sake of your own peace of mind.

Strawb' lights beam, creates dreams,
Walls move, minds do too
On a warm San Franciscan Night
Old child, young child feel alright
On a warm San Franciscan night.
Angels sing, lead of wings,
Jean 's so blue, Holly Davidson 's too
On a warm San Franciscan night
Old angels, young angels feel allright
On a warm San Franciscan night.

I wasn't born there,
Perhaps I'll die there
There's no place left to go
San Francisco.

Cops face is filled with hate
Heaven 's above,
He's on a street called love
When will they ever learn?
Old cop, young cop feel alright
On a warm San Franciscan night.

The children are good,
They don't brace foods,
It's an American dream,
Includes the Indians too.

Some corrections from memory:

W@> This following program is dedicated to the city
W@> And people of San Francisco.
W@> Who may not know what they are beautiful,

"Who may not know it, but they are beautiful"

W@> And so is their city.
W@> This is a very personal song,
W@> So if a few cannot understand it
W@> Particularly those who are European residents,
W@> Save up all your breath

I believe those last few lines are:

"So if you cannot understand it,
Particularly those of you who are European residents
Save up all your bread"

Mind you, the idea of saving up all your "breath"
(presumably to smoke pot) had never occurred to me.
The lyrics seemed clear enough with "bread" -
buy a real ticket and really fly there, rather than
taking a drug trip to simulate being there.
Still, maybe I'm the one who misheard the word...

W@> And fly Translove Airways to San Francisco, USA.

I had taken this as simply a takeoff on Trans World Airways (TWA),
with the City of Love as destination. Meaning, pretty much,
that any airline that got you there could be considered
"Translove Airways". But it's possible that "Translove Airways"
was used as a direct reference to drug use in some areas of
the world. It wasn't an expression used by people around me,
but I was only around the fringes - I wasn't a user myself.
So I could be missing something here.

W@> Then maybe you understand this song.

"Then maybe you will understand the song"

W@> It will be worth it
W@> If not for the sake of this song,
W@> But for the sake of your own peace of mind.

W@> Strawb' lights beam, creates dreams,

W@> On a warm San Franciscan Night
W@> Old child, young child feel alright
W@> On a warm San Franciscan night.
W@> Angels sing, lead of wings,

Again, unless I'm missing something, this was
"Harley Davidsons too", a reference to a motorcycle
popular with the Hells Angels, who were in the area.

W@> On a warm San Franciscan night
W@> Old angels, young angels feel allright
W@> On a warm San Franciscan night.

W@> I wasn't born there,
W@> Perhaps I'll die there

W@> When will they ever learn?
W@> Old cop, young cop feel alright
W@> On a warm San Franciscan night.

W@> The children are good,
W@> They don't brace foods,

This doesn't sound right, but I can't bring to mind the correct lyrics.
It's been a long time...

W@> It's an American dream,
W@> Includes the Indians too.

... Commercial we'll _never_ see: "Got Filk?"

Let me jump in here with what I just recently transcribed and sent to the original
requestor. I guess I forgot to post it as well.

Several months prior to "San Franciscan Nights", Donovan had written a
song called "The Fat Angel" (on the SUNSHINE SUPERMAN album), featuring
the chorus "Fly Trans-Love Airways, get 'cha there on time..." I think
Jefferson Airplane also performed it.

Keep on flying,
