I am requesting your help in compiling a list of song lyrics and
titles that mention other performers or groups. Examples are:

Titles:

"Jackie Wilson Said"
(Van Morrison)

"Roll Over, Beethoven"
(Chuck Berry)

"Don Henley Must Die"
(Mojo Nixon, not to overlook his
"Bring Me The Head Of David Geffen"
or
"Debby Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child")

Lyrics:

". . .Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around . . ."
(Deep Purple in "Smoke on the Water")

". . . I hope Neil Young will remember,
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow . . ."
(Lynyrd Skynyrd in "Sweet Home Alabama")

Interestingly, Mojo Nixon also wrote
"Elvis is Everywhere",
while Frank Zappa performs an instrumental titled
"Elvis Has Left the Building".

Less well known is the fact that then-20-year-old Ludwig von
Beethoven, having completed the funeral cantata on the death of Holy
Roman Emperor Joseph II in 1790, lightened up long enough to write
"Elvis Won't Even Be Born for Another Hundred and Forty-Five Years
Yet".

;-)

But I think the REAL examples above should illustrate what I'm looking
for.

I would appreciate ANY references that the readers of this group can
provide, even if it's "I think the Inkspots sang one that mentioned
Paul Whiteman's Orchestra in 1946 or so . . ."

If you can supply a source or a URL, great, but ANY leads would help
me out. I'll mention you on my web page when the project gets enough
material.

Send 'em to me,
The RepoMan

How about Spandau Ballet - True.

2nd or 3rd verse goes;

"With a thrill in my head and a pill on my toungue"... ... "Listening
to Marvin all night long".

A reference to Marvin Gaye.

Everybody knows this song as "There Is a Man" but the real title is
"Closer to the Truth." What are the lyrics to this song? The first 10
seconds on my CD suffer from (deliberately introduced) mechanical errors
or aberrations intended to be sound effects. The rest of the song is
an interesting mix of separate tracks...

But what were the lyrics to that song? I can't make them out very well.

Hello,

One that come to mind is in the CW area, "You Never Even Called Me By My
Name", sung by David Alan Coe and written by Randy Goodman. Sometimes
referred to as the world's best country and western song; refers to Bill
Anderson, Merle Haggard and so on.

Another from French music, is Charles Trenet's, "Moi J'aime le
music-hall" where he refers to himself, Aznavour, Piaf, Rossi,
Chevallier and others. If you need the lyrics, I have his book.

Steve Perry has a song on his first solo album called, "Captured By the
Moment," in which he mentions and/or references several artists and even Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. (where has he gone, the man who said, "I have a
dream"), the Beatles (where have they gone, the four who sang to Let it Be),
Janis Joplin (sweet Janis cried, "Lord, won't you buy a Benz for me"), Jimi
Hendrix (Jimi was right, castles made of sand slip to the sea), Jim Morrison
(one open Door, he tried to set the night on fire), Sam Cooke (LA motel, one
sad mistake took Sam away), Otis Redding (Otis was right, a little tenderness
we gotta try).

Also,

A lot of country performers mention each other. Hank Williams, Jr. does it too
many times to cite them all, but "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)" and
"If You Don't Like Hank Williams" spring to mind. Travis Tritt mentions Billy
Ray Cyrus and Merle Haggard in "Old Outlaws Like Us" (you can talk all day
'bout the next Billy Ray, but I'll cast my vote for Hag). He mentions Roy
Acuff, George Jones, Hank, Jr., Waylon Jennings and Duane Allman in "Put Some
Drive In Your Country."

On a more current note, one of my new faves, The Marvelous 3, mention Blur, the
Cure and Oasis in their song "#27." They also mention KISS in the song
"Lemonade." And Cheap Trick mentions KISS in the song "Surrender."

Those are the ones I could think of right away! Fun!

IN THE LAPS OF LEGENDS (Ken Tamplin)

Of Morrison, Elvis and Lennon
Stands in their shadow of their name
Mercury, Joplin and Mr. Nelson
All heroes of fallen fame
Well there's Marley, Croce, Holly and Mamma Cass
Oh Carpenters, Vallens and Gaye
And Mr. Gibb, Bon Scott, Lynott and Marriott
You know they all took the midnight train
They were shot down, with the bullets of time
Phantoms forever young
They couldn't slow down, well maybe they knew
Yeah was this the thing they were born to do

CHORUS
In the Lap of Legends, monuments of man
It's the state of the arts
With a tainted vision, get it while you can
On that crossway to the stars

Now Robert Johnson, Rhodes and Hendrix
Yeah they were makin' all the noise
With Stevie Ray Vaughan and Duane Allmond
You know we lost those Skynyrd boys
Well there's Bonham, Wilson and Buddy Rich
And oh we can't forget Keith Moon
Well their names are written in the wind
Struck with an immortal wound
They were shot down, with the bullets of time
Phantoms forever young
They couldn't slow down, when it's said and done
Heaven waits for another immortal song

CHORUS

CIAO.

How about the other way around? I know of two groups that took their
name from lyrics:

Restless Heart, from a song by the Eagles (no, I don't remember which
song, sorry.)

Also, the group Mannheim Steamroller. They're the ones who did the
(mostly) instrumental Christmas albums that most people recognize
without knowing exactly who they are. (Rush Limbaugh always uses their
Christmas songs as bumper music from Thanksgiving to Christmas.) They
did a series of albums named "Fresh Aire". This was taken from a song
by Mason Williams, of "Classical Gas" fame.

I know this is not what you asked for, but I hope you can use it anyway.
